About
Filled with narrow lanes and pedestrian-only streets, the historic center of Quebec City is best explored on foot. This guided walking tour ensures you won’t miss the details that make the city so fascinating. Take advantage of Quebec City’s layout by following a downhill route from beginning to end, as a guide shares stories from the fortified city that’s the beating heart of French Canada.

Highlights
- Visit pedestrian-only sites in the heart of the historic city
- Follow a gentle, downhill-only route from Upper Town to Lower Town
- Finish by the Old Quebec Funicular, which links Lower Town and Upper Town
What to expect
Make your way to a central location in Quebec City’s Upper Town, and then join your guide for a small-group tour of the historic center—a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Set out on foot to running commentary on the modern-day culture and long history of Quebec City, passing stone buildings with a distinctly European feel. You’ll see the Fortifications of Quebec, and learn the important role that the city walls once played.
Pass La Citadelle de Quebec (Quebec Citadel), an active military installation and the official residence of the Canadian monarch, then take in Notre Dame des Victoires—one of the oldest stone churches in Canada.
Cross Place Royale, often called the birthplace of French America, and wrap up the tour near the base of the Old Quebec Funicular, where you can hop a ride back up to the Upper Town without retracing your steps uphill.

Marie was a wonderful guide. Very knowledgeable and a great communicator. We saw so much of Old Quebec City and learned a great deal about the history. I highly recommend this tour. It was one of the best Walking tours I have taken.

We really enjoyed our walking tour. It was nice to have a local guide and she was able to answer all of our questions, in addition to making a food recommendation. We visited a number of the important places, and enjoyed learning the history of the city from the guide. She was definitely very knowledgeable and her English was excellent! There were 14 in our tour group, which felt reasonable. You end the tour at a different location than you started the tour, and it would have been nice for them to include a funicular pass with the tour. Our tour took 2.5 hours, despite the fast walking, so something to consider if booking back-to-back with another event. Overall, we enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone visiting Quebec City for the first time!

This was our second tour with this company. We toured about 9 years ago and decided to do the tour again on our second trip to Québec. I found it very interesting to have a different guide with a different perspective! It is clear that the guides are well informed passionate and appear to have some liberty to choose how to present the history of their city. This time, our tour was with Francis and we thoroughly enjoyed his presentation of the history of Québec. We definitely learned things that we had not learned before. We commented that we wish we'd had that questioning the status quo mentality that our younger Millennial friends have, but alas we (the forgotten Gen-Xers) came of age mostly before the internet and didn't have the array of perspectives at our fingertips until we were into adulthood.
A word of caution is that the tour does run long; I suggest budgeting 2.5 hours if you are making plans for other activities after your tour. That way, you won't feel rushed or stressed about getting to your next destination.

A big thank you to Dominique Lavigueur for giving us such a detailed, informative and educational tour of Quebec upper town and lower town. Dominique has a true passion for Quebec's history and it is apparent in her commentary and vast knowledge of the city's sites. We enjoyed two hours learning about the buildings, sites, history, and left with such a passion for learning more. Wish we had more time to book more tours with Dominique. 12 people was a good size and management. Highly recommended.

We enjoyed the walking tour provided by our guide, Louise. She was able to to provide a historical context of the city, which enriched our experience. Louise had a playful and fun demeanor that kept us engaged and eager to learn more over our 2.5 hour tour. We recommend taking this tour.

We had the best time on our tour with our guide, Francis! He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and was happy to answer all our questions. The tour is exactly what it says - a thorough and detailed history of the city and its people, which was just what we wanted. I'd highly recommend if you're interested in history and want to travel the city and learn!

We will be biking to the meeting point. Can we bring our bikes on the tour, or is there a place to safely store them?

I’m sure you could find a bike rack close to the meeting point where you could lock them up. The walking tour itself is both the upper part of the old city as well as the lower so almost impossible to bring bikes on it. Everything is so close that it’s all walking distance. But maybe if you’re not staying right within the city walls riding a bike to the meeting point may be a good idea.
