- S2523EAjenniferj00Amazing Tour - you will love it!What a wonderful tour! Had a great time - we saw so many birds, especially puffin. The crew was friendly, informative, and with a great sense of humor. The boat was nice size, clean, and easy to find a spot to watch all the critters and birds. Was a fantastic day - thank you so much! Highly recommend Gatherall’s!!!
- Room-in-my-suitcase00Get Screeched by a Puffin.Gatherall's Puffin and Whale Watch is a 90 minute tour allowing tourists the opportunity to witness puffins and whales in their natural habitat. I took in an endless view of puffins nesting on the cliffs .......but alas.....no whale sightings this tour. Expert guides provided enchanting commentary interspersed with dramatic storytelling. For me, one of the highlights was that I got screeched ( become a Newfie). The procedure involves sampling authentic screech rum in a special keeper shot glass, kissing a puffin and getting a personalized certificate of authentication........... the puffin had bad breath.
- 24debbym00StunningEven though we didn't have the honor of seeing any whales, we were blessed with the Puffins.. Captain AL, First mate Luke, and Liam, Luke and Becca were amazing.. especially loved the poems and songs.. will be back ... thank you all.. oh and let's not forget the beautiful ladies in the gift shop 😉
- Leilah_Hillman00Neat puffin cruise!Nice and light cruise on a beautiful day! Very accommodating crew. They (Liam, Rebecca, April and Luke) were all friendly and respectful! The puffins were cute:)
- FellowTraveler4594500A fascinating tripLoved the humour!!!!! Loved your contest game at the end! Staff was exceptional!! As a bonus got to see a whale!!
- D7949OFkens00We became honorary Newfoundlanders! An amazing experience for our group! Whales and just a few million Puffins came by to say hello. Being Screeched in at sea by April was the icing on the cake. The captain and crew were hilarious and entertaining while obviously having our comfort and safety top of mind. Even the ladies in the registration and gift shop made it a fun stop. So much fun. Thank you to all for a very memorable time!
- IndustryShrink00Saw a whale!Went out on the cruise on Sunday. Were told it wouldn't be likely for us to see a whale as the season had passed. And, you know what? We're just leaving the dock and going out in the harbour and a whale surfaces - not one of the big tail-waving surfacing but a whale nonetheless. And 'he' showed himself about 9 times before taking off for parts unknown. It was great...as is the crew - friendly, talented, makes you feel comfortable and safe. Highly recommend using Gatherall's.
- L5078BPchrisd00Whales and Puffins Oh My!Didn’t disappoint. Saw lots of whales and Puffins and Bird Island was spectacular sing all of the birds close up! Smooth sailing! Well done to the staff!
- M1873ZVpatriciam00Fantastic time!Great experience! The crew was amazing (thanks Al, Jerry, Claire, Chris and Liam!), they sing songs on the way in and out which is a nice touch! We were lucky to see a minke whale which was amazing, and the puffins and other sea birds are so cute. I was amazed by how many birds there were and how close they got to the boat. There is also a nice gift shop that sells drinks like coffee just in case you're on an early boat!
- 831karleyg00Whale and Puffin tourA great time had by all -Momma and baby spend time playing around the boat -great pics-loved the Puffins too.The crew were excellent...Want to do it again sometime.
- Newfieseagal00AwesomeAwesome tour with the kids, saw 5-6 whales very close to the boat feeding on capelin, saw the bird sanctuary, over 1million puffins nesting, beautiful calm day, entertaining staff, great time, back again next season👍
- nadyas72500Coastal TourThank you so much for another great tour! This was our fifth sailing (we book a tour at least once every time we're home) and each one is fantastic! A trip home wouldn't be the same without one!
- 586palh00Fabulous scenic coastal tour with O'Briens & GatherallsYour scenic coastal tour was excellent! The crew obviously loved their jobs as they were so enthusiastic, friendly - so welcoming and helpful to everyone. The geological information was incredible and very interesting. I also loved it when Matt sang us a few songs - doesn’t get any more local or better than that! Thank you for making our trip wonderful - we will certainly pass along a recommendation for your tour to all our friends planning to visit. Thanks again - a trip certainly worth repeating!
- MaryO106800Amazing tourWe did the tour today. I gotta say it was a great experience even though we never seen any whales. With this being their last day for the puffin and whale watching tour, we were not expecting to see much because the time of year. Which the lady who took our booking over the phone also informed us of this so we wouldn't be disappointed. However, we did get to see some puffins flying around and sitting in the water. The staff is really friendly, our tour guide sang some Newfoundland songs. Amazing voice by the way and the captain was funny. All of this together made it an amazing experience even with out the whales and cliff side of puffins. Thank you to all. P.s. The bathroom's at dock side was cleaner then most restaurants I have been to. 👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- meaghank_120010/10 What a fun adventureWhat an amazing experience. This was one of the best boat tours. The guides are very knowledgeable, we got to see a humpback whale, which was beautiful. We then rode over to Gull Island, which is home to over 2 million birds and it was incredible to watch and learn all about these tiny birds that flock to this island annually. 10/10 recommend this to ANYONE! Great family fun :) Plus, you can get screeched in on the boat, which is a cool experience on its own!

Amazing adventure even for me, a local ! The knowledgeable guides were impressionable and displayed both confidence and strong interpersonal style. Singing Newfoundland songs and telling folklore tales, what a way to enjoy the ride aboard the beautiful tour boat. That complete with stringent country air and salt water spray splashing my skin ... the ultimate ! Whales breaching directly in my view. Wow, wow, wow !!! With the adrenalin rush on max, we soon see hundreds of Puffins, Gannets, Common Murre, and Black Legged Kittiwake. All I can say is that, until you have experienced a tour with Gatherall's puffin and whale watch, you have not truly experienced Newfoundland ! Amazing !!

Thank you so much for the kind review Sandra. We are so happy to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your trip with us. It seems like you were very lucky to see the whales breaching and putting on a show for you, it doesn't happen every day but it certainly is magical when they do. Coming up to Gull Island with hundreds of thousands of seabirds will definitely make your jaw drop! Our tour guides do an excellent job with the commentary and really do love having fun with the guests through their music and stories. I'll be sure to pass on your praises to them. Thanks again for such a kind review, it really means a lot to us to hear from a local what role we play in sharing our Newfoundland culture to guests. We hope you are taking care and we can't wait to have you onboard when it is safe to do so.
Cheers

Very pleased on the whole trip as if we were taking an entertaining biology field trip. The detail description of different bird habitats and their breeding behavior by the crew members plus the exciting sight of whales swimming, jumping out of water and tail flipping made this trip very memorable. The layer of fog above water gave the bird islands a poetic and mysterious scenery! GO Tours! Gatheralls and O'Brien offer the best kind. Our group of 8 from 5 months to 73 years were having a whale of good time.

Hi Karen.
Thanks so much for choosing GO (Gatherall's & O'Brien's) for your 2020 staycation! We're all so happy to be able to work together to continue to offer our adventures and experiences throughout summer 2020 in spite of all of the significant disruptions to the travel plans of so many of our guests. We really appreciate the support from our fellow Newfoundlander's and travelers from the Atlantic provinces who are able to visit in 2020 as we look forward to welcoming guests from further afield once again in 2021.
Wishing you many more magical memories in 2020.
Cheers.

Loved it, loved it, staff were friendly, knowledgable and Liam was talented with his renditions Well worth the money, and while wildlife is not guaranteed, we were so lucky to see whales, dolphins, and my favourite thing, puffins. Very well organized, with great staff. Would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone. Thanks

A last minute decision to take this tour resulted in one of our best Maritime experiences so far in our month long adventure. Everything about it was 'top of the line' starting with the folks at the booking/gift shop. The crew on board the catamaran were fantastic. Totally entertaining and knowledgeable - singing Newfie songs when not providing details on whales and/or birds or history. The catamaran was the right boat as well, given that we had some seas that were a little troubled from winds the day before. Highly recommend taking this trip with Gatherall's.

We came in late August. The Gatherall's website was very clear about what to expect which we really appreciated. They guaranteed Puffins at this time of year and whales were a hit and miss (as expected for this time of year).
Gatherall's over-delivered! They took us to a Puffin colony where we saw tonnes of Puffins. They were also very knowledgeable and friendly! We didn't see any whales though but the crew tried hard to find them. The entertainment was great (they sang and kept a positive vibe going the entire trip). They made it really fun for the family especially the kids. We all had such a great time!
We saw the O'Brien's vessel and they were jammed like sardines. Our boat was very comfortable and not too packed. It went on the same ocean path as O'Brien's so it was the same tour but more comfortable. I'm glad we booked with Gatherall's!
Tips for those taking the tour:
1. Flip your caps in reverse so the winds don't lift it off
2. Wear a windbreaker as there could be strong wind gusts
3. Best part to position yourself for the tour is the lower deck in the front left (you get an unobstructed view and most of the scenery is best viewed from that side as you're looking left for 90% of the tour). You will be standing tough but it's worth it. There are seats at the top but people stand on the edges which block your view.
I would definitely recommend this tour! It was the best part of our trip to the St. John's area. We would go on this tour again with Gatherall's if we ever came back here.

Hello Wiley!
Thank you for making our services apart of your 2022 summer travels! I'll be sure to pass along your thanks to our fabulous crew as they always try to maintain a happy and positive outlook and make the most of every minute on the water. Of course we cannot change nature and unfortunately the whales arrived and departed 2 weeks earlier than expected but that still doesn't stop our crew from trying their best to spot these magnificent creatures on each and every tour no matter how far outside the peak season. We appreciate you taking the time to read through the information on our website and realize this :)
Thank you for the great tips to our future guests!!
We wish you many more exciting adventures in your travels and look forward to welcoming you back the next time you are in our beautiful province!
Cheers.

I absolutely loved this trip! For a quick little 90 minute adventure, I was pretty impressed. The bird colony is nothing like I expected. I mean, it's just birds right? How interesting could it be? Well let me tell you that our boat was surrounded by whales and I couldn't take my eyes off the thousands upon thousands of birds! There were puffins racing our boat, and other birds "running" across the water, while thousands swam or flew overhead and even thousands more relaxing on the island. It was incredible. Okay, the whales were great too but they weren't the highlight for me. And the staff were incredible! From the safety speech that had jokes mixed in to the young staff that broke out into songs during the journey, jokes thrown around and the interesting tidbits of knowledge about the wildlife or area... it was all amazing! Their tip box is kind of hidden though. Other companies hold out a tip bowl as you exit. This company just has one attached to a railing and it's easy to miss. So bring cash with you and look for the tip box as it will be well deserved.

Hi folks
Thanks so much for detailing your experience with Gatherall's. We're oh so happy to hear that the whales co-operated too - every trip is a little different and sometimes they are plentiful & active and other times the can seemingly disappear - its part of what make it so very special.
Thanks for allowing Gatherall's to be a part of your 2022 travel memories!

Absolutely loved the trip! It was my families first time on a boat tour, we went as a celebration for my son graduating kindergarten. What better way to celebrate than to try something new and exciting during a pandemic! GO Tours (Gatheralls and O’Brien’s) went above and beyond. Social distancing was a thing, and there were signs both at the Gatheralls dock with rules and hand sanitizer as well as on the boat, staff made sure to remind everyone as we departed as well. As we unboarded and went to the gift shop, we came out and witnessed the crew cleaning the boat so it’s cleaned between runs too! With half capacity (even less during this crossing specifically), there is absolutely no worries on weather you will be safe or not, as the crew are on top of things to make sure passengers are safe!! The crew treats you like family the moment you board, and they were incredibly kind to my son, chatting with him about the whales, puffins and even his little teddy puffin we got prior to boarding. Then add the fact we saw whales and puffins, it really was a fantastic trip. Even to their social media, fast to respond and they’re very active on platforms like Facebook and Instagram and it gets you excited for your upcoming voyage! I can’t say anything bad, I’m one happy customer and we’ll be back! If I have any recommendations during this pandemic it’s to definitely visit this local company, you will get 5 star treatment and you don’t even need to leave the province!

Our crew always strive to make everyone feel safe and welcomed, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic as safety always has and always will be paramount on our tours. From the captain on, each crew member was knowledgeable, approachable and helpful - and great singers! I hope I have all the names right: Luke, Liam, James and Luke were onboard for our tour. The safety rules before we sailed were taken very seriously but presented by the captain in a memorable way. Respect was shown to the dolphins and whales we encountered and the boat was handled in such a way that people on both sides caught a glimpse. The trip ended all to soon with a captain and crew who all obviously loved what they were doing. Highly recommend!

Hi Christina
Really appreciate that you've taken the time to share your experiences with fellow travelers. We're incredibly lucky to have great crew & staff members who put their hearts into making sure everyone has a great visit with us. Thanks for mentioning the incredible spectacle that of the nesting seabirds - cannot be understated even though the whales hog the limelight during whale season.
Wishing you many more incredible adventures and thanks again for your support.

We will be in S John's Sept 4 arriving on Windstar 0800 and interested in 0900 sailing. Do you pick up from the cruise ships and what is per person charge for roundtrip transfers? Party of two possibly 6. Are the puffins and whales still in season? Thank you GH

Puffins spend four months of the year on rock nests in Newfoundland raising their young. The other eight months are spent at sea. Puffins are in NL in June so still might be there in early September. I know whales arrive in July but not sure if they are still there in September. This cruise does pick up at hotels but again not sure about cruise lines. Sorry. It is well worth it for birds alone because there are more than just puffins if it works out for you.

Hi, We are staying in St John’s the first week of a September and we
Won’t have a car. Two questions; will the tour company still provide a shuttle to the departure area, and what is the likelihood of seeing whales or icebergs? Thanks,
B Gunn

I believe they will still be offering the shuttle then but you can call them at 1-800-419-4253. You won't see icebergs then but likely more whales than we saw. It would be worth asking them when the baby puffins hatch as that could be quite interesting.

As long as you are on the top level you should be fine. The waters were fairly calm when we went so you should be ok. The tour doesn't go out if the water is really rough.
