- 947sheilac0 contributionsA well-spent few hours observing nature in all its glory! The cruise was amazing and the crew was great. The scenery was beautiful; puffins zipping over the ocean, bald eagles soaring overhead. We didn't see any whales; too late in the season, but we did see an awesome sun fish, with a face only a mother could love. All in all, a relaxing, enjoyable journey out on the clear waters of Newfoundland. Would highly recommend this tour.Written October 21, 2024
- H5152PVrobertd0 contributionsGreat boat tripIn the afternoon we took a Puffin & Whale Watch cruise on Witless Bay. The whales had migrated south but the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve has the second largest colony of Atlantic puffins in the world. There are other seabirds too, such as the common mures. We saw quite a few of the the 360,000 Atlantic Puffins in the reserve. Our guides, April and Luke, entertained us with music as well as commentary.Written October 20, 2024
- X515ELbarrym0 contributionsUnderwhelmingPuffins are small, fly fast and don't allow the boat to get close, so you really don't get a good look at them or photograph. We saw a sun fish but no whales and not a lot of puffins. So if you're expecting a great exposure to wildlife you may be disappointed. The crew give good commentary and sing and tell jokes to fill the void. Over priced compared to other tours we did in NL.Written September 15, 2024
- X8829ZZlouiser0 contributionsSaw puffins...yay! Top item on my bucket list ticked off! A spectacular experienceThis trip wass an experience of a lifetime. Suitable for everyone An absolute must when visiting Newfoundland. Friendly, knowledgeable guides Ample room on both decks to see and take photos despite the tour being full. We saw a bald eagle, minke whale, 30-40dolphins, puffins galore and their cousin the common mure, jellyfish and a myriad of other sea birds. Gatheralls will pick you up from the hotel. We drove and got lost! Diane one of the friendly helpful staff gave us directions over the phone and we were so happy with her friendly patient manner in guiding us to the spot....so as not to miss this experience of a lifetime. I can't recommend this trip highly enough!Written September 7, 2024
- AlanaRogers980 contributions10/10 Puffin ExperienceThis tour was amazing! There were around 70 people on the tour in early September and we got to see a bald eagle, tuna, sunfish and thousands of puffins. The staff and captain did a fantastic job of explaining everything we were seeing and they were very entertaining. I learned lots about puffins and their habitat and I highly recommend this tour!Written September 5, 2024

Very well organized - even terrific weather was arranged especially for us! Thank you Gatherall's for an excellent tour, no whales but an infinite number of sweet Puffins. Highly recommend this tour - ten out of ten!Written August 25, 2024
- nltravell0 contributionsPuffin Palooza at its best! The crew on this tour was amazing! They were informative, fun, and entertaining!! We appreciated the opportunity provided to see the magnificent wildlife and we certainly saw lots! Especially puffins!! Wow! And even a whale at this late in the season! We were screeched in and that was a blast! Too funny!! The most memorable was that every effort was made so that everyone on board was able to see the whale, pausing and be patient meanwhile sharing information The humour and smiles from the vessel to the gift shop brings great value to the tour experience!! We all had a fabulous morning on this Gatherall’s Boat Tour. Say hi to Clare, Luke, Jerry and Clare’s mom!!Written August 24, 2024

The puffins were amazing and we got very close to them for a good view. And we saw a bald eagle which was great. - AbbyEmptyNesters0 contributionsA Wonderful, Entertaining and Educational Tour.My partner and I could not have had a bettee experience than we did on this tour. Well, it maybe could've rained a little less but ... Anyhow, the ship was good, the staff were amazing, knowledgeable, entertaining and enlightening, as well as being all-around helpful. The trip to the Island to see the Puffins (and other assorted birds) was quick, the time spent there was informative and fun, there was much to see and much to learn. One passenger got Screeched In, the crew sang songs and played an instrument or two, and we learned lots of local language (RDF = Rain, Drizzle and Fog). One of the better tours of this type that we've ever been on, and the hospitalty was second to none. A truly memorable experience that anyone would enjoy.Written August 21, 2024
- scout3510 contributionsGreat experience!!One of our favorite holiday experiences!! We saw a whale and countless puffins and the Gatherall's crew made it so much fun. Screeching in ceremony was another highlight. If you have binoculars take them to see the puffins - they are way smaller than we realized!Written August 19, 2024
- deniseob0 contributionsGatherall's has it all.Excellent attentive staff who quickly and easily answered any and all questions. They kept a careful eye on everyone aboard, both for safety reasons and to ensure everyone had an opportunity to see as much as they wanted. The boat was well equipped and it was easy to move about to the best vantage points. They were in contact with other boats to determine the best area to have a chance of seeing elusive whales this late in the season.Written August 18, 2024

- I4696NSchrist0 contributionsGreat company but can be hit or miss.Company and people are amazing. Three stars are just for the experience overall. They definitely let you know it's not guaranteed prior to boarding but still disappointing when you don't get to see the whales while paying the price you pay for a family. The birds and island are cool but paying 400 dollars and leaving a little disappointed doesn't sit right. Obviously no fault to the company though.Written August 1, 2024
- MH_Toronto0 contributionsFun and friendly afternoon outVery friendly staff with great singing voices! That was a really nice touch to hear local songs being sung along the way. Provided information about the whales (we saw humpbacks!) and the birds.Written July 29, 2024

Had an absolutely Awesome tour today with my Mama who's 87 years young! We were blessed with good weather, got to see dolphins, puffins, two female humpback whales who put off a great show for us!!! Many cherished memories were made for us both ❤. I highly recommend taking this tour, the crew were fun and very informative about all the various species that we witnessed. We were even lucky enough to get pooped on by a puffin, that's some good luck I'll gladly take!! Lol Thank you to Capt.Al and all the crew for an unforgettable day, keep up the great work!😊🐳 Cheers!

We took the morning tour in a very bright and sunny day. As we left the dock, the guide introduced the crew and he started singing! What a way to introduce us to Newfoundland culture!
It was a unique perspective to see the rugged coast of Newfoundland from the ocean itself. We went to Gull Island, the largest in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. We saw a lot of puffins and I have never seen that huge of a concentration of seabirds ever. I am so relieved we did not get pooped on.
The boat slows down and takes time for everyone to take pictures of the seabirds. The boat circles around Gull Island and moves on towards the lighthouse then comes back to the dock.
We did not see whales, but I already knew because it was too early in the season to see them. Thr puffins and seabirds already made the price worth it so I don't feel bad at all not seeing a whale.

Hi Folks
Your enthusiasm is most contagious! We're all so very delighted to learn that you so thoroughly enjoyed Gatherall's blend of education, environmental awareness, Newfoundland culture and entertainment! Mid-June through to mid-August is typically the peak of the season for the whales but of course we always like to remind people that "they have big tails and wear no bells"! We encourage our guests to remember that the whales are always on the hunt for food - their presence is dependent on the amount of food in the area and not necessarily the number of visitors and that we are all so incredibly lucky when we do encounter them :).
Thanks so much for vacationing in Newfoundland this year and for including Gatherall's as a part of your travel experience.
Cheers.

Was an amazing tour with an experienced, knowledgeable captain & crew. They sanitized the boat b4 the cruise plus sprayed all the customers hands before anyone boarded & everything was spotless. The tour itself was amazing, entertaining & very informative. We had the pleasure of 2 humpback whales for the majority of the cruise before moving on to the puffins. Would definitely go again. The 2 tour guides did amazing songs on our way in but i give the edge to Jack. Hard to find the words to describe such an amazing experience, well done crew well done.

Hi there Shawn, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review it is greatly appreciated. We are happy to hear you had an amazing tour with us at GO Tours (our partnership with O'Briens). Safety is our top priority now more than ever so we make sure that our crew do a stellar job in properly sanitizing all surfaces. Our crew are the best and work hard to ensure that everyone aboard is well looked after at all times.
It sounds like you were very lucky to have two humpback whales for the majority of you trip. Sometimes the whales can get extra nosey and like to hang around the boat to check everything out.
I'll be sure to pass along your compliments to Jack and the crew! Thank you Shawn for supporting us this season we can't wait to have you aboard with us again soon.
Cheers

Amazing adventure even for me, a local ! The knowledgeable guides were impressionable and displayed both confidence and strong interpersonal style. Singing Newfoundland songs and telling folklore tales, what a way to enjoy the ride aboard the beautiful tour boat. That complete with stringent country air and salt water spray splashing my skin ... the ultimate ! Whales breaching directly in my view. Wow, wow, wow !!! With the adrenalin rush on max, we soon see hundreds of Puffins, Gannets, Common Murre, and Black Legged Kittiwake. All I can say is that, until you have experienced a tour with Gatherall's puffin and whale watch, you have not truly experienced Newfoundland ! Amazing !!

Thank you so much for the kind review Sandra. We are so happy to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your trip with us. It seems like you were very lucky to see the whales breaching and putting on a show for you, it doesn't happen every day but it certainly is magical when they do. Coming up to Gull Island with hundreds of thousands of seabirds will definitely make your jaw drop! Our tour guides do an excellent job with the commentary and really do love having fun with the guests through their music and stories. I'll be sure to pass on your praises to them. Thanks again for such a kind review, it really means a lot to us to hear from a local what role we play in sharing our Newfoundland culture to guests. We hope you are taking care and we can't wait to have you onboard when it is safe to do so.

Very pleased on the whole trip as if we were taking an entertaining biology field trip. The detail description of different bird habitats and their breeding behavior by the crew members plus the exciting sight of whales swimming, jumping out of water and tail flipping made this trip very memorable. The layer of fog above water gave the bird islands a poetic and mysterious scenery! GO Tours! Gatheralls and O'Brien offer the best kind. Our group of 8 from 5 months to 73 years were having a whale of good time.

Hi Karen.
Thanks so much for choosing GO (Gatherall's & O'Brien's) for your 2020 staycation! We're all so happy to be able to work together to continue to offer our adventures and experiences throughout summer 2020 in spite of all of the significant disruptions to the travel plans of so many of our guests. We really appreciate the support from our fellow Newfoundlander's and travelers from the Atlantic provinces who are able to visit in 2020 as we look forward to welcoming guests from further afield once again in 2021.
Wishing you many more magical memories in 2020.

A last minute decision to take this tour resulted in one of our best Maritime experiences so far in our month long adventure. Everything about it was 'top of the line' starting with the folks at the booking/gift shop. The crew on board the catamaran were fantastic. Totally entertaining and knowledgeable - singing Newfie songs when not providing details on whales and/or birds or history. The catamaran was the right boat as well, given that we had some seas that were a little troubled from winds the day before. Highly recommend taking this trip with Gatherall's.

We came in late August. The Gatherall's website was very clear about what to expect which we really appreciated. They guaranteed Puffins at this time of year and whales were a hit and miss (as expected for this time of year).
Gatherall's over-delivered! They took us to a Puffin colony where we saw tonnes of Puffins. They were also very knowledgeable and friendly! We didn't see any whales though but the crew tried hard to find them. The entertainment was great (they sang and kept a positive vibe going the entire trip). They made it really fun for the family especially the kids. We all had such a great time!
We saw the O'Brien's vessel and they were jammed like sardines. Our boat was very comfortable and not too packed. It went on the same ocean path as O'Brien's so it was the same tour but more comfortable. I'm glad we booked with Gatherall's!
Tips for those taking the tour:
1. Flip your caps in reverse so the winds don't lift it off
2. Wear a windbreaker as there could be strong wind gusts
3. Best part to position yourself for the tour is the lower deck in the front left (you get an unobstructed view and most of the scenery is best viewed from that side as you're looking left for 90% of the tour). You will be standing tough but it's worth it. There are seats at the top but people stand on the edges which block your view.
I would definitely recommend this tour! It was the best part of our trip to the St. John's area. We would go on this tour again with Gatherall's if we ever came back here.

Hello Wiley!
Thank you for making our services apart of your 2022 summer travels! I'll be sure to pass along your thanks to our fabulous crew as they always try to maintain a happy and positive outlook and make the most of every minute on the water. Of course we cannot change nature and unfortunately the whales arrived and departed 2 weeks earlier than expected but that still doesn't stop our crew from trying their best to spot these magnificent creatures on each and every tour no matter how far outside the peak season. We appreciate you taking the time to read through the information on our website and realize this :)
Thank you for the great tips to our future guests!!
We wish you many more exciting adventures in your travels and look forward to welcoming you back the next time you are in our beautiful province!
Cheers.

I absolutely loved this trip! For a quick little 90 minute adventure, I was pretty impressed. The bird colony is nothing like I expected. I mean, it's just birds right? How interesting could it be? Well let me tell you that our boat was surrounded by whales and I couldn't take my eyes off the thousands upon thousands of birds! There were puffins racing our boat, and other birds "running" across the water, while thousands swam or flew overhead and even thousands more relaxing on the island. It was incredible. Okay, the whales were great too but they weren't the highlight for me. And the staff were incredible! From the safety speech that had jokes mixed in to the young staff that broke out into songs during the journey, jokes thrown around and the interesting tidbits of knowledge about the wildlife or area... it was all amazing! Their tip box is kind of hidden though. Other companies hold out a tip bowl as you exit. This company just has one attached to a railing and it's easy to miss. So bring cash with you and look for the tip box as it will be well deserved.

Hi folks
Thanks so much for detailing your experience with Gatherall's. We're oh so happy to hear that the whales co-operated too - every trip is a little different and sometimes they are plentiful & active and other times the can seemingly disappear - its part of what make it so very special.
Thanks for allowing Gatherall's to be a part of your 2022 travel memories!

any suggestion on how to get from the cruise port to your tours September 13
Written September 1, 2022
Contact the tour company directly. I am pretty sure that they have a van that will pick you up in downtown St John's. I saw it in the parking lot when I took my tour.
Written September 2, 2022
We will be in S John's Sept 4 arriving on Windstar 0800 and interested in 0900 sailing. Do you pick up from the cruise ships and what is per person charge for roundtrip transfers? Party of two possibly 6. Are the puffins and whales still in season? Thank you GH
Written July 21, 2019
Puffins spend four months of the year on rock nests in Newfoundland raising their young. The other eight months are spent at sea. Puffins are in NL in June so still might be there in early September. I know whales arrive in July but not sure if they are still there in September. This cruise does pick up at hotels but again not sure about cruise lines. Sorry. It is well worth it for birds alone because there are more than just puffins if it works out for you.
Written July 21, 2019
I accidentally paid for 1 adult and 2 seniors for my cruise today. We are 2 seniors. I paid through you and PayPal. How can I get my money returned for the adult fare and from PayPal? Thanks

Hi, We are staying in St John’s the first week of a September and we
Won’t have a car. Two questions; will the tour company still provide a shuttle to the departure area, and what is the likelihood of seeing whales or icebergs? Thanks,
B Gunn
Written July 6, 2019
I believe they will still be offering the shuttle then but you can call them at 1-800-419-4253. You won't see icebergs then but likely more whales than we saw. It would be worth asking them when the baby puffins hatch as that could be quite interesting.

Hello,
How is the ride for one who is prone to motion sickness?
Thank you
Written June 13, 2019
As long as you are on the top level you should be fine. The waters were fairly calm when we went so you should be ok. The tour doesn't go out if the water is really rough.
Written July 7, 2019
Hi, when is the best time of year to see icebergs, we are planning a weeks visit next year.
Written June 8, 2018
We have no idea. This year not many ice bergs. It seems to vary year by year. But even with no ice bergs it’s worth the trip!
