- X4161BSjanep0 contributionsAwesome Adventure!I have been wanting to do a tour of the Rat's Nest Cave since I moved to Alberta over two decades ago. I should not have waited so long! This was a fantastic day of adventure from the hike up and down from the cave entrance to the cave adventure itself. Not a dull moment and our guide Annie was fantastic! We were a small group and got to experience rappelling down into the cave, several squeezes as well as total darkness! I highly recommend this adventure to anyone that it appeals too!Written August 25, 2024
- AlecCalgary0 contributionsAwesome, tiring, fun adventureWe did the four hours adventure tour with our fabulous tour guide Anne. On the half hour hike she talked knowledgeable about the forest and showed us fossils. In the cave she was super supportive and relaxed, showing us how to best get down or up without making us feel inadequate. The tour itself was amazing, difficult at times but doable. We were tired afterwards but happy. Our 13 year old remarked that this tour was better than video gamingWritten August 24, 2024
- monicasA2501NR0 contributionsGreat family experience! This was just the right amount of difficult for the parents - our kids of course were up for even more! The views are incredible, even before you get into the cave. The guide was amazing - knowledgeable and friendly and reassuring!Written August 17, 2024
- Vacationer5848850 contributionsExperience Spelunking and Challenge YourselfThis was an amazing experience, both challenging and rewarding. This was no walk in the park, and required use of arms and legs. Our guide was lovely, informative, and very helpful providing advice on the best way to traverse rocks and climbs. I still can’t believe I was able to squeeze through some openings or climb up slick rocks.Written August 11, 2024
- 329jennaraeb0 contributionsSuper fun, exactly what we were expectingOur guide John was really awesome and patient. He had lots of titbits of information to share with us about the area, the caves history and much more. It was anAmazing authentic experience, we really liked that it was catered to our needs and the needs of our group and what we were most interested in. We would recommend it definitely.Written August 11, 2024
- G6889UQdebrah0 contributionsAwesome fun and adventureI took my 3 daughters on the explorer cave tour(ages 12,14,16) and we had a great time. Our tour guide Annie, shared all kind of history and information about the cave and surrounding area. We have done cave tours before but this one was so much more fun, we got to crawl around and squeeze in and out of small areas throughout the cave.Written August 8, 2024
- brooklynnw9800 contributionsFun/ exploringMy husband and I weren’t too sure we would like it at first, but loved it and would definitely come again to try the adventure tour with some family. It was super excited and nothing like we’ve experience before. All the history in the cave made it even cooler. Definitely recommend shoes and not cowboy boots hahaWritten August 6, 2024
- V9574RIbriannam0 contributionsSo much fun! This was such an incredible experience! We had John as our instructor and he made it such a fun and educational adventure. We ended up being in a group with another family of 3 with a child the same age, after a little bit the boys wanted to lead the way with guide and try every challenge they could. I’m not a fan of elevators, so I had some concerns going into this.. but John assured us that if we couldn’t get through the entrance then it was best for us not continue. It ended up not feeling too tight at all and I even did the challenge shoot! Would 10/10 recommend if your feeling up the physical and mental challenge that splunking brings.Written August 5, 2024
- DianaR5900 contributionsGo for it!!Overall, I would say this was a fantastic tour/experience. I was apprehensive in the beginning about going into a dark cave, but once our tour guide Annie told us about sizes of squeezes and options I felt better . Hike up the mountain I didn’t realize was a bit strenuous, but it was very hot that day, and that added to the Stress. We took many breaks and got to the top in about 40 minutes. The cave is dark and a little damp as you progress downward but very interesting and doable. I’m over 60 and not the best of shape and I managed to do it. I felt so much better for having done it. Going down was much easier because you are able to slide down the rocks. Coming up you have to climb up those same rocks, using hands and knees and anything you can cling to including some provided ropes to get up. Honestly, the only challenging part was the very hump at the end to get out but we did it. Annie was awesone.Written August 5, 2024
- Y9186NCjessiel0 contributionsTop notch mum/daughter adventureWe had so much fun! This was my second time in the cave and I will be coming back for the longer tour next time (had to give the “short” tour a go again since I brought my daughter (15) this time- it was a hit!!) Grace was a fantastic guide. Her experience, planning and knowledge sharing is what made our tour above and beyond. Highly recommend her! This tour is NOT for everyone as it is physically challenging and requires comfort in tight, dark, cold and wet spaces. Be prepared for a work out!Written August 5, 2024
- davidwA8378ZP0 contributionsAn adventure not to be missed. We were first time/senior cavers who were a little apprehensive at the beginning. Our guide Tammera was knowledgeable and skilled and made the tour so much fun. We can’t wait to go back for the Adventure Tour!Written August 2, 2024
- olegs7500 contributionsRest’s Nest Cave tourWe took the Rest’s Nest Cave tour today in Canmore, Alberta. It was the most difficult caving we’ve done so far. We spent 4 hours in the cave, used ropes and harnesses. I got the most scare experience by taking the Challenge Squeeze passage. I could not move any parts of my body but abdominal muscles and tips of hands. Even worse – once I passed it I had to go back the same way. My son Michael was brave enough to follow me and we didn’t get stuck there. Of course it's optional challange, but I higly recommend it for the most adrenaline rush :) Overall it was a perfect activity for people who like to get more active exploring natural wonders of Banff.Written July 30, 2024
- mariocJ1068VP0 contributionsCaving for first time. An awesome experience.Today we had an awesome experience going inside a cave for first time. Tamara was our guidance leader. - brendap4690 contributionsWonderful experience! This was an amazing adventure! Our guide Emily was kind, compassionate, energetic, intelligent and had contagious energy!!! - SALabbe0 contributionsDo this! You will have an wonderful experience! What a fantastic activity to do with our niece and nephew (11 and 14). The guide (Annie) was very informative and helpful in showing us how to move through the cave. I was a bit hesitant to go as I’m not a fan of small spaces BUT I’m so glad I did it! The spaces weren’t that small, the cave was magically quiet and just a fantastic experience. We would highly recommend this adventure!Written July 25, 2024

Highly recommended! Our interpretive guide, John, was absolutely fantastic, sharing so many interesting facts about wildlife, the environment, and cave-related items. The caving experience was tremendous - challenging at times but extremely rewarding. Safety was stressed throughout the activity. Masks were worn since physical distancing could not be maintained once inside the cave.

This experience is one of a kind! You might think you have some kind of an idea of what you are about to do, but it is 10 times more intense than that! The waiver you sign to participate in this tour is terrifying, be warned! Overall it was quite safe, but some risks are involved inside the cave and I can't say I felt safe 100% of the time while inside. WEAR good shoes with good grip that are not overly bulky, you will need to be able to secure footing on small stone ledges inside the cave in order to descend and climb. We wore cross trainer running shoes which were adequate. (Ice crampons were provided for winter climbing on snow covered and icy trail climb) The hike to the entrance is fairly substantial and steep (180 metres) If you are not reasonably fit, you will have a hard time with the climb. (I am a 51 year old female and reasonably active and I struggled significantly) Make SURE you have had something to eat before climbing the trail and take a protein bar to eat prior to going into the cave. If you have a hydro pack, take it. No water bottles or food allowed in the cave. If you are a large person, tall and bulky, some of the tight squeezes in the cave will be a challenge for you. Be prepared to be in the cave, underground for about 2.5 - 3 hours. We went in winter and wore hoodies and provided overalls and were warm inside the cave (constant cave temp year round is about 5°) Inside the cave is also quite physical and requires good arm strength to repel down and back out of the cave. If you are claustrophobic, this WILL be intimidating as there are many small spaces to squeeze through and many holes to descend into. You will be very deep underground (245 metres) and the cave is dark and damp at the bottom. It is called "Rat's Nest Cave" for a reason, you will mostly likely see the rat that inhabits this cave (it is about the size of a small cat) and many rat droppings in the cave. At one point in the cave you will be in complete darkness like you have probably never experienced before. We also did a deprivation crawl/climb in darkness which was intimidating. At the bottom, in complete silence you will listen in darkness to the sound of the water dripping in the cavern and appreciate what this experience means. It is a bucket list item for sure! Unreal and unforgettable!

This was one of the best experiences of my life. I've been in a few caves before, but they were more of a formal tour with easy walking in a cave. I expected something similar here, but with a 16m repel thrown in for fun. I could not have been more happily surprised by what we actually experienced.
The tour really progressed with whatever we were comfortable with and it was no easy walk. I enjoyed the challenge of squeezing, twisting, climbing, repelling and navigating the cave.
Our guide max was fantastic. I'm a tour guide myself, so I can appreciate his skill. He effectively answered question, maintained great energy and was very skilled at engaging each member of our group. Not to mention, he's a pretty good climber, caver and knows a lot of information about caves.
Sometimes, once you experience something, there is no reason to do it again. Not here. I would do the cave tour again in a heartbeat!

The Adventure Tour was amazing! Max, our tour guide was absolutely phenomenal. He made everyone feel welcome and comfortable even in the most challenging parts of the tour. This is by far one of the most amazing tours I have ever done, and kudos to Max for making this experience so memorable. His vibrant passion, extensive knowledge, utmost confidence/trust and continued encouragement throughout the tour took the entire experience to the next level. I will tell everyone I know about this tour and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the Canadian Rocky Mountains in a very unique and thrilling way.
Sincerely,
Sam

My husband and I were a little nervous about fitting in all the tight spaces but Alex made everyone feel really safe and comfortable. Sitting in the dark listening to underground water is an amazing experience. The trip does require moderate physical strength and exertion. Definitely worth it.

My son and I really enjoy this tour. I have to copy the following review as my comment since it is exactly how we felt.
"I can’t stress how amazing this trip was. Everything from the repelling to the shimmying through tight spaces was incredible. Max was our guide, he was very down to earth and you could tell that he was clearly very passionate about cave exploration. The initial hike was very short, but it was made even easier by the pace Max set. He made sure we didn’t get tired, and would point out cool parts of the cave every now and then."
one mistake I made is forgetting to wear the contact lense. Wearing-mask within the cove made my glasses very foggy. There are lots of tips online regarding how to avoid foggy glasses. Please check it out.
Highly recommend this tour for everyone visiting the area. Max is a great guide.

Incredible experience with guides Max and Alex! I did the Adventure tour on a super hot summer day and it was perfect temperature in the Cave (5°C) and a relief from the smoke. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting a adventurous and fun tour that requires a good level of fitness. A little nerve racking but each tight squeeze opens into an area you can sit or stand up in so that puts your mind at ease.

This is an experience unlike any other. I was so thrilled to share this with my 16 year old son. My husband and I first toured the caves 15 years ago and felt it was time to give our son the experience. Rappelling in the Rats Nest Cave and sliding through the Laundry Shoot were amazing. Our guide "Max" was so upbeat and passionate for caving. These are bucket list items that can be achieved year-round in the Rats Nest Caves.

It was a spiritual experience for me and it tested me physically and allowed me to overcome my fears of doing things with an ilieostomy. That being said it blew my mind how beautiful it was and how much life is fragile but prevails under the harshest of circumstances. I definitely recommend this experience to anyone nature at it’s purest most beautiful even in the dark there’s so much to see. My guide Grace was amazing she’s knowledgeable and intuitive and definitely deserves a raise $$$$. I can’t say enough except go open yourself to an adventure that will last a lifetime. Grace so much love to you 🙏❤️❤️❤️

How should we dress for this activity if we book for wed may 15? I know that you give us equipment but how warmly should we dress?

The cave is always about 40 F no matter the time of year. The coveralls help, but wear a couple layers underneath. It’s not cold as long as you’re moving, but if still for awhile you’ll feel it. We wore long sleeve shirts and a long sleeve pullover with long pants and were fine.
