In this Original Cambridge History Tour we cover a thousand years of Cambridge history from the invasion of the Romans, to the arrival of the students to the Second World War. Discover how Cambridge and the university has influenced the fields of art, literature, science, politics and religion. From the Tudor Reformation to the English Civil War to the Suffragettes, Cambridge has often found itself at the centre of change. Follow the lives of the likes of Isaac Newton, Henry VIII, Oliver Cromwell, Millicent Fawcett and Stephen Hawking and hear what university and town life is like today from guides based at Cambridge University. Our tours are restricted to a maximum of 12 people so small groups are guaranteed.

Our guide is a doctor student who is highly knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. We learned many stories about scientists affiliated with Cambridge. Visited several main colleges of Cambridge and some famous sites. For science lovers, I also recommend visiting a couple of museums before and after the tour. We did the museum of earth sciences before the tour and the polar museum after the tour. Amazing! We also purchased separate tickets to visit the King's college chapel. If you are interested in science, Cambridge, history/women's history, I would definitely recommend this tour. Rowena gave us such wonderful details about the campus and the famous scientists that have studied and conducted research here. - 973elsbethd0 contributionsApple myths dispelled!The walking tour was exactly as described, 90 min + filled with information about the colleges, its history of Royal inception, its scientists, and their achievements. Rowena told the Cambridge story well, balancing fact with historic anecdotes. A few myths were dispelled! Rowena met us exactly on time, doing her very best to contact latecomers, whom she directed to a convenient meeting place rather than delay the start of the tour. The walk was extensive through the town centre, with regular stops outside of Colleges, research bldgs or scenic points. Wear good walking shoes, and feel free to ask questions as Rowena is very knowledgeable, well versed in the history and lore of Cambridge through the ages.Written April 6, 2024

What a great tour! Rowena is very informative and clearly enjoys imparting her knowledge of Cambridge history. It was a great way to introduce our visitors to Cambridge. It was so interesting and information was delivered clearly and with humour. It was 2 hours very well spent and we would certainly recommend this tour.

Great tour with a fantastic guide. Rowena is well informed and enthusiastic; offering deep insight into the history of Cambridge and its beautiful colleges. The tour is well paced and is a thoroughly enjoyable 2 hours packed with facts and stories about the amazing buildings and famous alumni of Cambridge university. Highly recommended.

I’ve been on a lot of walking tours in Cambridge, but I have to say that this one is definitely the best. Rowena was such a knowledgeable and energetic guide, and it is clear that she has a real passion for history and knows what she’s talking about. She was also so considerate and thoughtful about answering all of our questions — and she is completing her PhD at Cambridge, so has a lot of good information about the Uni. It was so nice to be able to support local small business and a Cambridge student. Thank you Rowena!

We decided to take a walking tour of Cambridge and what an amazing tour it was. Rowena is so personable and so knowledgeable, a Phd student herself studying in Cambridge. She has a passion for the history of Cambridge and can tailor the tour to suit your interests. I was spellbound with everything I learned during the tour. Rowena is a great storyteller and so happy to answer any questions. I would thoroughly recommend the tour.

A very lively and informative experience. Rowena clearly knows her stuff and presents it in a friendly and open way. We learned a lot! The time passed very quickly. WE were also grateful that she was flexible when we muddled our dates.

Perfect tour if your kids are looking to apply here, or if you’re just looking for a nice day out. Cambridge feels pretty disorientating at first, because it’s a gorgeous crisscross of streets, and there’s no “campus”. You’re surrounded by so many colleges and lovely little nooks and crannies that it’s hard to tell where you’re going. So we’re really glad we started off our visit with a tour.
What made it special was our guide. She was so funny and so knowledgeable (and easy to hear!!), and we got a real sense of what it’s like to live in Cambridge, and also how it came to be what it is today. It was like buying a best friend for 90 minutes.

The walking tour was wonderful! I learned a lot from Rowena. She is knowledgeable and very sweet. She told us a lot: from histories to interesting stories, from when the college was established to what it’s famous for……..l also took a lot of beautiful pictures. A very good quality tour. I truly enjoyed it!
