SPECTACULAR Secrets of the Royal Mile
I cannot express how incredible the tour and our group’s guide for the day, Linda, were. Her knowledge of the depth and diversity of the city’s history and important figures, as well as her engagement with the group and presentation was phenomenal and one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. Getting to learn, hands on, about all of the fun and complex histories of the Royal Mile and Edinburgh will be something I will cherish and remember forever. There wasn’t a single moment that wasn’t intriguing or inspiring of curiosity. Linda’s passion for what she teaches made the whole experience valuable and memorable. I genuinely hope to return and have the opportunity to go on the other tours available one day. Her energy was consistently full of joy and enthusiasm. She kept our large group on track, on time and made it feel like it was over in a blink of an eye because it was fully engaging from the first moment to the very last. I’ve never been on a tour that I remember the guide as much as the visit itself, until now. She made learning fun and fulfilling, and I couldn’t have asked or hoped for a better experience. This was my first ever visit to the city and I cannot wait to come back to experience and explore more. 10/10 tour and guide. Thank you for everything!

    10/10 would go again
Booked the history tour because I wanted to experience the underground vaults in the historical context rather than spooky scary skeleton stuff. My guide, Veni, was funny, knowledgable and overall an amazing human being. We ended up doing the tour just the two of us because of no-show, but she did not skimp on the details. I know for some people (not me) history might have a connotation of being a sleeping pill, but WAIT until you go on the underground tour with Veni because it was even more lit than whatever wine they had down there, lol. Next time I wouldn’t mind the spooky scary skeleton because I know it would be one of a kind experience coming from Mercat Tour. Highly recommend.

    Ghost tour with children
We really enjoyed the tour. It was the perfect level of scary for our 9 and 13 yr olds. They even provided a sensory bag full of things like squishy toys, fidget toys and a light and sunglasses. This is available apon request. My daughter has adhd and often gets bored of listening and walking on tours so this was great although she did not get bored. Aniella was our guide she was very theatrical and made it very fun

    History and Whisky go together
We had Jerad who gave a lot of local history in the Whisky story of Edinburgh. We then had a tasting of 4 whiskys down slowly and well!, enjoying and finding the different tastes and backgroud flavours of each one. An enjoyable 2 hours which passed surprisingly fast.

We had an absolutely amazing time on our tour. Our guide, Ross, had a great style of storytelling. His acting made it very immersive and he really connected with his audience. I wish we could go on all the tours with him! It was worth every penny and I highly recommend booking any tour with Mercat, as they are all very well-organised.

This tour visits places in Edinburgh that you wouldn't otherwise see - the vaults of the South Bridge that lie underground and which were once the dens of all kinds of illegal and unmentionable activities. Martin, our tour guide, was not only knowledgeable and well-versed in local lore, he was highly entertaining. He gave every story his own special dramatic flair, complete with ghostly laughter and creepy voices. He was terrific! He didn't convince me of the existence of ghosts, but I really enjoyed the tales and legends and the historical facts. I recommend this to anyone who wants to get to the "bottom" of the history of Old Town Edinburgh!!

Thank you for your lovely review! We're delighted to hear that Martin made your experience so enjoyable with his dramatic flair and captivating storytelling. The Blair Street Underground Vaults certainly hold fascinating and eerie tales, and it's great that you could explore this hidden side of Edinburgh's history. We're glad you enjoyed the mix of legends and facts, even if the ghosts stayed elusive! Best regards, Lindsay

It’s not often that I leave a review, but this one is well earned! We spent one night in Edinburgh on a work trip and decided to use it (very wisely!) on the ghost and ghouls tour. Jack was a fantastic storyteller and made 2 hours seem like 10 minutes as we were totally engrossed in every story. Well worth the money, a brilliant way to spend a few hours, and we will absolutely be back.

We went on the Evening of Ghosts and Ghouls tour with Jack and it was so so good! Jack is a phenomenal storyteller, setting the scene from the get go with a mixture of grizzly tales of torture, execution and general nastiness of days gone by. The underground vaults were fascinating and Jack told some wonderfully spooky stories of the ghosts that dwell down there. All finished off with a dram of whiskey and a few more ghostly tales in the cellar. Highly recommend and we will 100% be back in the future for another tour!

It sounds like you had an incredible time! Jack really knows how to captivate the group with his storytelling. The combination of chilling stories, the eerie atmosphere of the vaults, and a whisky to wrap it all up sounds like a perfect evening. All the best, Lindsay

Our guide, Veni, was lovely and engaging, but the stories were underwhelming and often consisted of telling us about 'ghostly encounters' people had had on previous tours. The vaults are pretty boring, just a series of old rooms with nothing in them. The part of the tour that happened above ground covered a very small area, so overall it felt like we got very little for our money.

Hi Alex, thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback. Whilst we're sorry you felt a bit let down by the experience, it helps us learn what to work on in future. It’s tricky when dealing with ghost tours as what is scary to someone can be mere child’s play to another! The stories told on tour include both stories from the real history of the city, as well as stories from previous visitors. Our ghost tours include at least 30 minutes in the Old Town of Edinburgh, revealing the history often missed in the location it occurred. We do not add set dressings to the Blair Street Underground Vaults so that they can be experienced as they would have been in the 1780s. Many of our visitors say this adds to the atmosphere of the tour, but we understand that tastes vary and that our tours may not be for everyone. We're happy to hear that you enjoyed Veni's storytelling, if not the stories themselves. If you have any further feedback you'd like to share, we'd love to hear from you at info@mercattours.com. We hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Edinburgh! All the best, Lindsay

I think Michael (our guide) was very funny and clearly loved and knew his history about Edinburgh. One of the best ghost tours I’ve ever experienced, thank you! I appreciated the fact that they didn’t need cheap jumpscares and fake noises to convey their fascinating tales. This service deserves a lot more recognition and I will further recommend to others.

Tour would be great for teenage girls on a camping trip but not adults. I love ghost tours more than anything but this one was cheesy. Tour needed some humor, more history and less high school drama performances. Every time the girl giving the tour yelled, everyone was rolling their eyes.

I cannot say enough positive things about this experience. If you’re a fan of all things spooky, or really even just historical, this tour is for you.

Our guide (Jared) was hilarious, knowledgeable, and really helped make the tour memorable. We learned so much about the city and got to see its gnarly underbelly, which was such a unique experience.

Mercat is also great, in our opinion, because of just how much they considered to help make the experience enjoyable (like providing headsets, the underground drinks portion with local brews, and balancing history seamlessly with ghost stories). There are no gimmicks here - I would not hesitate to do this again on my next visit!

We had a very energetic and engaging tour guide -- Marie -- and she did such a wonderful job keeping the tour up tempo and entertaining. Our group included adults and children and Marie made sure to keep the tour family friendly -- despite some of the darker content that this tour covers. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun evening adventure around Edinburgh.
