    What to Expect
Marvel at the highlights of Neolithic Orkney on this full-day Orkney Islands tour, departing by coach from Inverness during summertime. Set your eyes upon the magnificent landscapes of the North Highlands before arriving at Scotland’s northernmost point in the village of John O’Groats.
From here, it’s just ferry ride across the Pentland Firth to the Orkney Islands. Search the strait for gannets, seals, puffins, pods of porpoise and the occasional whale as you island-hop through the Churchill Barriers, which connect five islands to form the Eastern boundary of Scapa Flow.
Your first stop is Kirkwall, the capital and largest town of the Orkney Islands. Learn from your guide about Viking history and admire the Romanesque architecture of St Magnus Cathedral, whose construction began in the 12th century.
Then step back in time 5,000 years at Skara Brae, a prehistoric Neolithic settlement—perfectly preserved under sand dunes and discovered in 1850 during a winter storm (admission fee is your own expense). See it along with the Standing Stones of Stenness and the Ring Of Brodgar Stone Circle and Henge—all comprising the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage site.
Once you’ve landed back in Inverness, you’re returned to the bus station where your day trip ends.

The Orkney Islands are scenically beautiful and always worth a visit. The tour with John O'Groats Ferries was well organized, but it was geared towards mass tourism and therefore very impersonal. But the staff was friendly and helpful.

We had a blast seeing, learning, and experiencing so much on this day trip. It was a super long day and we were all exhausted by the end, but wow just wow. Definitely something we would keep on our itinerary. Our bus driver on the...More

I was so sorry I went on this trip. It was too crowded. As a solo traveller, I had to sit with strangers on a huge tour bus once we got to Orkney, and I got the back of the bus, so long minutes to...More

It's really quite disheartening to receive such a poor review when I know how hard everyone here tries to make the day a great success. I will see if there are aspects we can improve on, particularly the sandwich provision in the evening, which in...More

The Orkneys are in a class of their own. You feel like you're at the end of the world up there and you don't realize how much you appreciate trees until they're conspicuously absent. It's eerie. Martin, our tour guide on the island, was fantastic....More
