    What to Expect
Travel independently to King John’s Castle and head inside using your admission ticket.

This 13th-century castle stands on King’s Island beside the River Shannon in medieval Limerick, and underwent a multi-million euro revamp in 2013, including the building of a state-of-the-art Visitor Centre.

Once inside, explore the fortress and Visitor Centre at your own pace, enjoying the historical atmosphere, battlements, and interactive exhibitions.

Wander around the ruined banqueting hall, learn about the carpentry, weaponry, masonry and coinage displays from the costumed actor-guides, and explore the replica medieval tent, blacksmiths’ forge, and siege recreations in the courtyard. Plus, ascend the tower to admire the 360-degree views over Limerick and the riverside.

Journey back in time at the Visitor Centre, charting the story of King John, the brother of Richard the Lionheart, and the fortress’ history via interactive touchscreens, 3D models, and interpretive displays. Immerse yourself in the computer generated animations and holographic projections, and watch the children enjoy the fun audio-visual tasks in the Education and Activity Room.

Perhaps cap your visit at the café, relaxing over snacks (own expense) while enjoying the castle and river views.

Your experience ends when you take your leave of the castle.

Great town, almost a city. Very friendly people, lots to do and a most interesting visit to the castle, with a free knowledgeable guide. If you're there on a Saturday, you must visit the Milk Market. Don't missed it!!!

A 13th Century building with interesting history. There was a docent in the large courtyard, a young man with a bow and I asked if it was a longbow. He pointed to one on a rack and said that one is a longbow, but would I like to take a shot with the re-curve bow he was holding.

I enjoyed this castle but I was not crazy about the interactive screens with the people from that time period. I felt like it took away the realness of the castle. Overall I enjoyed the castle.

As one of the best preserved (if not the best preserved) castles in Europe, King John's Castle is worth a visit. From a nice, if not spectacular, museum to a good visual tour, the information is clear and enjoyable, if not always chronological. What makes the castle fantastic
