Overview
The mountaintop monastery of Montserrat is notoriously difficult to reach. Eliminate the hassle of coordinating times between trains and cable cars on a stress-free tour from Barcelona. In addition to a guided tour of Benedictine Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery, one of Spain’s most important pilgrimage sites, ascend Montserrat mountain in a cogwheel train that affords spectacular views. Plus, entrance fees are included.
What to Expect
After convening at a central meeting point in Barcelona, board an air-conditioned coach bus destined for Montserrat, home to one of Spain’s most prestigious pilgrimage sites.
On reaching the foot of the mountain, hop on a cogwheel train, and learn about the effect that hundreds of years of erosion have had on the mountain. On arrival at the Benedictine abbey at the mountain’s summit, take a guided tour and admire La Moreneta, otherwise known as Our Lady of Montserrat.
After free time to explore the monastery grounds independently, return to your original Barcelona departure point by coach.

Not worth it

This tour was advertised as being conducted in English but was conducted in Spanish as well. Because the tour guide was more comfortable speaking Spanish, I felt she spoke more about the site in Spanish - only natural but was annoying to sit through and...More

We only did the tour of the monastery as the cogwheel train and the wine tour were not available on the days we were staying Barcelona. While the bus tour up the mountain was winding and a bit scary, the view at the top is...More

Worth it

This is not exactly the tour we took. Ours was a bus tour 3pm to 7 pm. This was efficient for us as sundown was 5:45 so we could doze on the way back in the dark. It was pretty commercialized, the monks were not...More
