The spots we went to were all excellent, we got to go to a bunch of delicious spots without reservations or lines, drank incredibly well, and were well informed about everything we ate and drank Highly recommended, would do again, and we booked an hour before the tour without a hitch.Written September 21, 2024

- emilykF4056HY0 contributionsGhost story? No - history lesson and scoldingLet me start by saying if you’re looking for the Gothic Dark History tour and judging whether to do that or this, they’re the same tour. We did not hear a SINGLE ghost story because we were told “Spain’s history is much more gruesome than any ghost story.” And while true and while I did learn a lot about the saints and World War II and the plague, I paid for a ghost tour and I didn’t get one. I was gaslighted with a dark history tour. The tour was fine and there were definitely dark elements and interesting points but it’s not what I paid for.Written September 20, 2024

The kayaking was more relaxing and not too tiring too. Water was pretty blue green and warm but we did encounter some jellyfish during snorkeling portion, so be careful!! Well, how should I put it? The paella was so mediocre, nothing special or I would eat again. But the experience was somewhat fun. The chef had a good personality, so made the experience a bit easy. The food needs much more improvement for how much it charges. This event is Purely for tourists, if you think you want to learn the real way, you would be as disappointed as me. >_<.

I expected a class where everyone have their own cooking station but it was nothing like that. First we took a trip to the local market to buy the fresh ingredients for the paella. The market was crowded and we kept losing people in the crowd. We finally made it back to the restaurant where we all gathered around the table to make a Picho (slice of bread with a slice of cheese and ham and a pickle held together by a toothpick). That was very basic and I wouldn't necessarily classify that as a signature tapas dish. Then the group was split in 3 where group 1 cleaned the seafood, group 2 cooked the paella and group 3 learned how to make sangria. I didn’t feel I learned anything and to be honest the paella didn’t taste particularly special, (nor the sangria), as it lacked flavor and seafood (way too much rice). The whole experience was punctuated by a few subtle “sell” pitches from the chef and local business owners offering “discounts” and “best local tips” to extract a few more euros from you and enrich your experience... I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this class.

I can’t rate this experience any lower than 1, but it was a zero. We arrived 15 minutes early for our event at the specified meeting point. Someone who worked at the Traveller’s nest bar confirmed we were in the right spot. We waited over an hour for our guide to show up and out tour to start. No one ever explained what the delay was and any time we asked where our guide was, we were told he was “running a little late”. We were offered free warm cava while we waited and we left after waiting 1 hour. Hopefully Trip Advisor/Viator does the right thing and refunds our money because this sure felt like a scam.

I paid for this class with the expectation of being able to prepare tapas and paella, neither of those things happened. The tapas were pre sliced (sweaty) cheese and salami with potato chips. The cook did not allow anyone to prepare anything only two people were given spoons to sample the broth. Everything was already pre cut and he just made it while we all stood around a very small hot kitchen. The usual place they use was already booked so we walked quite a distance to a very small restaurant and that is where he prepared the food. There was not enough room for everyone to even be in the kitchen to watch him cook. And the AC was not working so they had two fans blowing air around. It was a very disappointing experience.

We had a great time learning to make paella, sangria, and our favorite tapas and, more importantly, eating and drinking them. The experience was very full including a stop at the famous Boqueria Market to pick out the seafood for our paella. Our guide explained how to choose the right items and how much to buy per person. We even stopped at a market stand for the saffron.
He showed us how to prep all the seafood, cut onions without crying, and chop garlic so the scent doesn't linger on you all day. Everyone had an opportunity to participate in the preparation and cooking of the paella. The chef/tour guide was very knowledgeable about food and nutrition.
We then made sangria, with a great explanation of all the fruits that should be included and the ones to avoid. It was great. Even the teenagers in our group enjoyed it.
Finally, we learned to make Pan Con Tomate, which had become our favorite tapas during our time in Spain.
Great experience at a great value. Highly recommend this.

This was the highlight of our trip. Chef Fernando was an absolute joy - he brought energy, humor, enthusiasm, along with teaching our group everything we'd ever know to prepare paella the right way (and sangria too)! There is a bit of walking involved - we met at a common spot, walked to the market to purchase our ingredients, then to the actual cooking location. It helped that our group all spoke English, even though it was made of of people from Morocco, Germany, and the United States. It was a great way to meet other travelers as well as see other parts of the Gothic Quarter. And of course the meal was delicious! We would definitely do this again on a future visit.

We attended the Spanish cooking experience and had a great time. The chef and helper were fantastic and the cooking class was both educational and very fun.
I would highly recommend if you are interested in cooking or just want to have a great time.

Philip was an excellent guide and chef for us for this cooking experience! We had a large session, and he was more than able to successfully accommodate. Our introduction to the market was helpful and it was good to see more of the city. This is not a private event (and doesn't claim to be), so expect social interaction with other guests as you drink and watch and cook (if you want to help). The paella was well-done, and Philip's personality and insights into the cooking process, with bits of history sprinkled in, were just as good. The event listing says 2-3 hours; budget at least 4 when you plan; we started at 1830hs and the paella had only just been served at 2230hs. A five-star experience otherwise, with one star deducted only because of the difference in time expectations.

This is not our first cooking class but it was the worst.
There were 14 in our group, in our opinion 6-8 would have been better served.
We were marched to the market to buy ingredients, which we were told were the best seafood.
We were left to wander, unaccompanied in the emptying market for 20 minutes before being marched (15 minutes) to the kitchen.
The kitchen was nothing like the one shown in the pictures, much smaller, with no room to stand next to the food preparation for all of us and very run down.
We were given Sangria and waited a long time while our host prepared in the kitchen.
There were a lot of instructions on preparation, most of which could be heard but not seen as there was no room around the food preparation area.
Six of us were asked to help, by stirring the paellas, preparing prawns, or chopping peppers but no other hands-on experience for any of us.
A few meagre tapas dishes were offered on one corner of the food preparation area. No explanation on preparation was offered.
Yet another wait, and more Sangria, (beer and lemonade were also on offer), and the paellas were served. Mine was so salty as to be inedible. The mussels were tiny and shrivelled. Only the prawns were good. Our host was enthusiastic but the group's spirits waned as the evening progressed.
The whole evening was very disappointing, and it was not worth it for €69 per person. In my opinion, this was not a satisfactory “Interactive Spanish Cooking Experience”.

Gabriel was an amazing host! We first went to the market for fresh seafood, then to the restaurant where he showed us how to prepare the seafood paella. Everything was explained as to how and why it is prepared, and everyone helped. The paella was amazing, highly recommend this tour when you are in Barcelona.

Hi! I took this class last year with Chef Kako and loved it. Visiting Barcelona with my partner on the 3rd and 4th of May (Saturday, Sunday) wanted to know if that’s when chef kako hosts the session! Thanks

Hello, what if someone can't have shrimp? Would there be a way to make some dishes without?
Written April 27, 2023
Probably. In my class the shrimp was cooked separately then placed on top of the dish before it was served.

I took this class a little while back but I lost the paper with the link to the recipe, could someone please share it with me? I can send my email if that helps. I really enjoyed the class and really wish I had the recipe.
Written July 18, 2022
Not for this cooking class. There is a longish walk to a very crowded market. You wouldn't be able to maneuver a stroller. The class itself is very hands on (knives, hot stove) with a lot of standing. No fun for a young child.
