- Your tour begins near just off the blue metro line at Largo Gaetana Agnesi. Travel back 2,000 years as your guide tells stories of gladiator battles, bloody animal fights, and executions in front of 50,000-strong crowds of spectators. If you’ve opted to upgrade your experience, you’ll then visit the arena floor and subterranean chambers, which are usually closed to the general public. Visit cells in which criminals and wild animals were kept, and follow in the footsteps of Roman gladiators in the arena. After ample time at the ancient landmark, you’ll continue to the Roman Forum via Via Sacra. The sprawling site has minimal signage, but your guide takes you to the highlights and gives you the inside scoop. Learn about the historical significance of the House of the Vestal Virgins and the Temple of Julius Caesar before concluding your tour with sweeping city views atop Palatine Hill.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Claudia L0 contributionsPompeii was jaw dropping!!! Love this tour!It was a beautiful destination, breathtaking views and our tour guide Barbara was great, she recommended a lot of good places to eat and visit.Written January 24, 2025
- Jim H0 contributionsBeautiful Pompeii/Amalfi CoastOur tour was an amazing historical experience and our tour guide Roberto, driver Adamo and Pompeii guide Nick made the trip even more inspiring. During the bus ride our guide Roberto made the time pass with an interactive perspective on the history and very diverse regions of Italy. I would recommend the trip and do a similar trip on future visits to Europe!Written January 23, 2025
- O7574CWerica0 contributionsAs good as it gets for a day trip tourThis was a decent tour. In my opinion, it was worth the money, HOWEVER, this experience isn't for everyone. I'd only recommend this if you want to see as much as possible in the shortest time possible. It is very rushed, and you only have roughly less than two hours in each destination. The food at the stops weren't the best in comparison to everything else you can buy in Italy, however the people were pretty friendly. Expect high prices as well. Next, Pompeii was absolutely beautiful. Not just the ruins, but the mountains and towns you see nearby. Our tour guide was good and educated us about how the citizens of Pompeii lived before their demise. After Pompeii, we all went to a pizza place and the food was not good. Could find better than what was offered there. Finally, the views of the Amalfi Coast and Positano were breathtaking. Beautiful coast that I wish to lay my eyes upon when I return to Italy. The atmosphere was off a fairytale. The views alone was enough for me to say that this was worth it, but again, everyone is different. Also, if you are afraid of heights, you're going to be in for a ride! Our tour guide, Viviana was great. I loved her energy and she taught us a lot about her country and herself. She would give us random facts, keep engaged, and simply talk to you and see if you were doing okay. There were also bathrooms in Positano that you have to pay for and her being the sweetheart that she is, paid for me to go in when I had no cash. A good person with a good heart. I will not include pictures because they don't capture the immense beauty of these places. You just have to see it for yourself! Have fun!Written January 23, 2025

- LarissaB3gg0 contributionsThis experience is a must!Laura our guide, Dan our driver and Enzo our Pompeii expert were amazing!! From the get go Laura and Dan were friendly, Laura gave us some amazing and insightful information about Rome, Casino, Benedictine Chappel & Monks and of course Pompeii, the Amalfi and Sorrento. Enzo in pompeii was funny, knowledgeable and all around gave us a great experience. I'd say this experience with these 3 is a must!Written January 21, 2025
- 120mildam0 contributionsHighly recommended tour!Very informative tour! Our guide (unfortunately I forgot her name) was very knowledgeable and shared interesting stories. It was my second time exploring Vatican City with City Wonders and the stories and the tour itself was different, so it's nice to know that every time you can have a different experience with this organiser. It took around 3 hours and it is really enough as eventually you get tired and the mind cannot grasp so much beauty and information :)Written January 21, 2025

- naomih4460 contributionsA must do when in Rome!A M A Z I N G!!! Everything was well organized, and the meeting point was easy to find and getting though the crowds was a breeze. Sylvia, our tour guide, made it such an amazing tour! She was so knowledgeable and made everything so fascinating. She was also pleasant and fun to be with and kept the entire group w thrilled with what she had to say. You could tell that she genuinely enjoyed what she does! My 24 year old son was ‘eh’ on going, but afterwards, he said he totally enjoyed it! Make sure you go to the top of the basilica, it’s with the additional $10 ($15 if you take the elevator part way).Written January 20, 2025
- Ting K0 contributionsPretty good tripIt was a very long drive almost 3 hours. When we booked it we didn't realize that pompei was within rome itself (lesson research map :-) We did have a great time was very interesting and educational. Our tour guide Clair was very good, funny, professional and helpful. We Appreciate her experience and knowledge. Our tour guide at pompei (sorry can't recall her name) but she wa a excellent and professional. Amalfi coast was beautiful. We recommend to go to pompei but prepare for a long driveWritten January 20, 2025
- GreenoreII0 contributionsDisappointingVery good guide to Pompei however the rest of the trip was pretty bad.. Why did it include Positano? We had expected a nice lunch but nothing was open at all. They should have sent us to a different town. We will go back to tours by locals rather than viator or trip adviser.Written January 19, 2025
- yoli2180 contributionsDay tourThe group was running late and moved us from the 0715 to 0730 tour. Meet up is at the fountain by the Museo side. There is a McD across the street for an early to go coffee before the tour meet up time. First stop was a store where you can buy sandwiches, pastries, drink, souvenirs, as well as use the bathrooms. In Pompeii we had a tour guide and were able to hear him through his microphone he used, and headsets we used. We were glad to have learned about and experienced this historical wonder. Next stop was Positano. Note the road to is very windy road, if you are prone to motion sickness, drink your medicine. From the big bus we had to use smaller shuttle buses. The town was picturesque and cute. Small souvenir shop in town. After Positano we heaed back to Roma with one restroom stop en route. Left at 0730, and returned at 2030. It was a fun, but long, day. Sonia was a great tour leader giving little stories about the places we stopped and so thoughtful in her recommendations for activities and restaurants around Roma. Thank you!Written January 19, 2025

I booked this City Wonders tour via Expedia for the Colosseum and Roman Forum.
The meeting point was relatively easy to find and the tour started promptly at 10am. Our tour guide was Tiziana, she was very knowledgeable and very funny!
We were advised not to take backpacks into the colosseum but there were other people in the group with backpacks and no issues. You are scanned like in the airport though before entering.
The tour lasted only 2 hours (not 3 as stated on the booking). Tiziana advised you can only visit the lower levels of the colosseum in the summer months. You are given a radio and headphone are provided so you can hear your guide talking even from the back of the group.
Overall the tour was good but I was a little disappointed we only had an hour in the colosseum, particularly given the price we paid (approx £100 for 2 people).
Our guide was great and the views are even better, would have like a little more time in the colosseum.

This was a really great tour - our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about her subject and this really came across. We learned a lot and it was great to be part of a small group. It is good to be able to miss out on the long lines although sometimes you do wish you could stop and read some of the information available. The instructions for meeting the guide were good but you do need to be aware that there are a lot of people hanging around near the station that will bother you given half a chance. The staff are good at picking you out and ushering you to the guide.
One thing I would mention is that on the information regarding the tour when booking they mention that there will be an option to "upgrade to include the access to the third tier, arena floor and underground chambers—sections of the Colosseum that are either newly opened or typically closed to the general public" - I queried this as when I actually booked that option did not come up and didn't really receive any answer, just the confirmation of the standard tour.
Nevertheless it was a very interesting tour and quite lengthy too - would definitely recommend it to others.

Our guide Amille arrived early and was extremely personable. She did her best to make sure a few latecomers had the chance to tour but ultimately we left without them. While waiting briefly for our entry time slot to come around Amille was able to give an interesting account of her life as well as the early life of the Colosseum. She was very knowledgeable and did not want to be drawn into giving false facts or any dubious time frames of when things may occurred. Amille was able to juggle a fellow tourer’s fall (mind your step people) with ensuring they were safe and we were all taking something interesting in. Amille was good with the larger crowds making sure we were all comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves throughout. There is an option to end the tour after the Colosseum or continue onto the Roman Forum, I would highly recommend continuing on to the Forum and viewing the entirety of the grounds (this could take an additional 2-3 hours) but very worth.

Hi, I paid for a Semi Private guided Tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill with City Wonders. This tour was advertised as a small group of no more than 12 people for a 2 hour duration and with head sets included. We arrived at the designated area where we were greeted by a member of City Wonders, we then were introduced to our guide who we later found out was a free lance guide. The tour started with 14 people but grew further down the line as the guides own clients joined the group. We had no head sets as advertised and with the rain and wind found it difficult to hear her. We skipped so many areas of the Colosseum like videos and artifacts, were given brief descriptions of the main areas and were then ushered out to the entrance for the Roman Forums where we were left to our own devices and our tour guide left, this was also after an 1 1/2 hours and not the 2 hours advertised. It was that bad that a French family wanted to stay and look further around the Colosseum and were told that was fine but they would then have to pay again for entrance into the Forum as it was a group booking (surprisingly they did) At £135.00 for the two of us this was extremely poor value and City Wonders should vet their guides more stringently?

Dear Y4885NYdavidt,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback.
We are sorry to see that you felt the tour didn't live up to your expectations.
First of all we wish to say that we are very surprised to hear that the group was more than 12 people, as generally speaking we would never allow more than those allotted to the time slot to join. This is because we usually do not have spare tickets.
Usually the headsets would also always be provided, and they would only not be provided if you joined the ticket only group.
We are also incredibly surprised to hear that the guide was not a City Wonders guide, as generally speaking the guides work for our company directly. What is more, it is usually not at all possible for other clients to join the tour as it continues.
It is however true that is is only possible to join the Forum if you do not stay in the Colosseum, as it is not possible for the guide to wait with the tickets to the Forum for clients to spend as long as they wish in the Colosseum.
We are very concerned by the issues you raise, and we invite you to contact us at info@citywonders.com with the name of your guide and the booking reference number for the tour, so that we may follow up and investigate.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Kevin

One of the highlights of our trip was definitely our tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. We cannot say enough positive things about our guide, "Barbara (Blue Eyes)" and the experience she provided! Barbara is a phenomenal guide! She is extremely knowledgeable, educated, speaks fluent English, and really explained so much of the history without ever making us feel rushed. She also really paid attention to meeting the needs of everyone within our group.
We have visited many places and have been on several guided tours and have often felt rushed, had language barriers, and at times have felt like cattle being herded. This experience was hands down 'THE BEST' and most enjoyable we've ever experienced!
Thank you to Barbara and to City Wonders!

We were so lucky to have the knowledgeable and very personable Christina as our guide. Her enthusiasm for her city was infectious, and her passion for her academic subject of art history (PhD no less) really brought the Colosseum and Forum to life. There were 12 of us, a small enough group to make it feel personal and fun. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for and so much more - we sailed past queues, and were treated to interesting titbits of information that can’t be found on Google or in a guidebook. If you are new to the city I can’t recommend a personal guide highly enough. Handy hint - make sure you have water, a cap and sun cream as the sun above the Colosseum is strong even in Spring!

This tour was fantastic! Although there were, what seemed like, a gazillion people gathering to see the Colosseum, the tour leaders quickly got us together with our guide and off to the front of the line. We saved hours of line-waiting and skated through pretty quickly. Our guide was patient and explained the process very clearly, so we all knew what to do and where to go. She was also incredibly knowledgeable as her other job is as an archeologist...so we really felt like we were getting an insider's tour. It was engaging and kept us riveted with tales of yore and information that doesn't always come from a book. When we moved on to the Forum and Palatine Hill, we got to see real archeological digs in action, too! I never felt rushed and although the tour was long, it kept me interested the entire time. I'd absolutely recommend this to anyone who wants a deeper exploration of these historical giants.

Tour was excellent! We had Stephanie as our guide. She had a great personality and a wonderful way of relating to the diverse group that we were, from all different parts of the world. She pointed out things that I would never notice if I were on my own. She also was able to tell the history in a way that made it came alive and made it relevant to our lives. Thank you!

The tour to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill was amazing. Booked using link on Trip Advisor. Guide was Selena. Very well educated on Romes history.
We did the Vatican first and then the Colosseum but I would reverse that order if going again. It is a total waste of time going to these places if you dont go with a guide as I feel a person should know what they are looking at. No queues anywhere and it was just great for us. Feel sorry for the Restaurants, busses, taxis etc. As tourism is dead here at the moment.

Tour guide was brilliant new what she was taking about. Passionate about her country.
Lots of steps and walking which is exactly what we expected.
Really enjoyed the tour and it was around 3 hours. Only thing I would advise is lots of people also did the Vatican City tour in the same day. Where as we did it over two days.
Doing the Vatican City tour and colosseum tour in one day would be far to much as there is no time for lunch as you go from one side of the city to the other. So glad we did it over two days!

Is the colosseum administration restricting your daytime access to the colosseum underground? A tour I booked with told me that due to overcrowding, the administration there is restricting underground access.
Written April 24, 2023
I think so. It looked as though certain (slightly more expensive) tours offered underground access, and some didn't. Btw, Trip Advisor is refusing to refund me for the tour I booked through them that didn't happen, so beware.

Hi! We would like to buy this tour mainly for skipping the line. Can we buy this tour but explore Colosseum & Roman forum ourselves (without a guide)?
Written March 13, 2023
No. You need to be with the guide to skip the line. It starts with the Colosseum, so you could leave the guide and explore that, but you won’t be with the guide to skip the line at the Roman forum..
Written March 14, 2023
Hi, visiting in November and would like to book this tour however a couple of questions, when it says a fully guided tour of Colosseum, does that include the Arena/ backstage etc.
Also once you go from Colosseum, to Roman Forums and then Palatine Hill- can you go back to the Colosseum/ Roman Forums on your own or not?
Many thanks
Marie

When we were there in August we had a very detailed and extensive tour of all three places. The Colosseum portion was incredible but we didn't go into the pits below. However I didn't feel we missed anything because we had quite a good stretch of time inside and outside the Colosseum and we left with amazing photos and a ton of awesome new knowledge/info about it's history. My understanding was that once we exited we were not able to go back inside the Colosseum.....unlike the Forum and Palantine Hill where we also had an incredibly detailed and extensive tour of those places as well.....but once the tour ended we were free to explore those places on our own. My wife and I did continue to take in both the Forum and Palantine Hill on our own afterwards and it was fantastic. For us the tour was the perfect amount of time and detail. It allowed us to feel like we really explored everything there was to see and learn. That said we are not huge history buffs who want to spend hours looking at architecture and reading plaques but I think even for people who want that kind of immersive experience they wouldn't be disappointed with this tour. I highly recommend taking this tour because of the "Skip the Line" element which really sped things up plus our guide was AMAZING so we were completely satisfied with the whole experience!

Why is the English speaking version £20 more than the other language options?
Written August 22, 2022
Don’t know to be honest…I have noticed that but it didn’t bothered me…I assume it’s because English groups are more frequent…🤷🏻♂️

Hi, I am looking to book a tour. I am not staying in a hotel, I will arrive on a Norwegian cruise line to Chivitavecchia. Where will be a meeting point with a guide? Thank you
Written July 19, 2022
Our meeting point was just outside of the Colosseum, above the subway stop. It was our responsibility to get to the Colosseum. I am sure there are tours that originate in Citavecchia, but probably encompass multiple stops, including the Colosseum and Forum.
