Walking tour of Montepulciano and free time in UNESCO-listed Pienza
Enjoy the region’s gastronomy with a farmhouse lunch and wine tasting
Comfortable coach travel—just sit back and admire the views
What to expect
Board an air-conditioned coach in central Rome, and journey into the rolling countryside of Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia region. Stop first at Montepulciano, a 15th-century hill town famed for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano red wine. Hear about its wine heritage on a walking tour, seeing highlights such as the clock tower, cathedral, and town walls. Next, venture into the area around Montalcino. Visit Sant’Antimo Abbey and gaze across the vineyards as you hear how their grapes are used in Brunello di Montepulciano wine. Head to a farm and enjoy a glass of Brunello with a 3-course lunch. Other select local wines are also available. Next up is Pienza, one of Tuscany’s UNESCO-listed treasures. Here, spend your free time exploring the historical center, designed by Pope Pius II in the mid-1400s. If you’re a foodie, hit the shops to buy Pienza’s coveted pecorino cheese. Your Tuscany tour then finishes with a drop-off in Rome.

Tuscany
We loved this tour! Though you do spend a great deal of time on the bus, there is so much beauty to see along the way. The winery we visited was beautiful and I was very happy to buy some delicious wine to take home.

Lovely day trip to Southern Tuscany
Chiara was our guide from Rome to Tuscany and back. She was organized, friendly, provided just enough commentary and quiet time, and was happy to answer any Italy questions.

The tour drives through the beautiful Valdorcia, and includes a guided walking tour in Montepulciano with a short bit of free time. The stops at Church of San Biagio and Pienza were just right, and gave a chance for walking and photos in between driving.

The lunch and wine tasting location was nice. Ample food, and good tasting pours.

Nice day trip from Rome.

Highly recommended, even in winter!
We took this day trip from Rome to experience the beauty of Tuscany, and even in February, when the grapevines are brown and empty, and the fields have not greened up, the views are breathtaking, and the towns a joy to explore. Our guide, Anna, was a storehouse of knowledge of Tuscany as well as all of Italy. We learned so much about the area and the towns. We will definitely do this trip again in the growing season for a chance to see a green Tuscany.

Our tour guide was so amazing and funny. JOHN went above and beyond by not only describing the tour sites, but also gave us a very informative history of Rome and Italy! Tuscany was absolutely dreamy and picturesque. Montepulciano and Piena are veritable historical treasures. The winery lunch and wine tasting was very nice too.

An amazing adventure
Feb. 2020 • Couples
We simply loved it! Our tour guide Anna was very knowledgeable and friendly, we spent the entire day with her. Sara (our tour guide in Montepulciano) was so sweet, you can tell she truly has a passion for what she does! The bus was superb, probably the nicest tour bus I’ve ever been on. After leaving Rome we stopped at a rest stop about an hour into our trip for coffee and cookies. We then continued our journey to the beautiful town of Montepulciano which was stunning. Sara took us all over and showed us all the beauty that Montepulciano had to offer. After an hour or two we boarded the bus and continued on to the wine vineyard. The house was lovely with incredible views. The food was excellent, the atmosphere romantic! The wine wasn’t the best, it didn’t succeed my expectations however that didn’t ruin our day at all. Not in the least. After the Winery we continued to a small country town named Pienza. We had about an hour of free time. From there we traveled back to Rome with a 20 minute break at The same rest stop we went to earlier.
Over all we learned so much from Anna and Sara about Rome, Montepulciano, wine and the beauty of the Italian lifestyle. I definitely recommend this tour to everyone who has free time to spare.
I wish we could take Anna and Sara and bring them to Florence with us!!

The trip altogether was about 12 hours. At first it seemed long but it definitely went by fast.

I also appreciated the fact that Anna didn’t ask for a tip at the end of the day. Most tour guides do and it makes one feel uncomfortable. For that reason we decided to definitely give her a tip since she greatly deserved one.

Also a huge shout out to Antonio the bus driver!

Great food, great sites, great experience!
Jan. 2020
I tend to read a LOT of reviews before I book a hotel or excursion, and sometimes I get hung up on the negative reviews and they scare me away. That almost happened to me on this excursion but I'm so glad it didn't.

I went on New Year's Day, mostly because I thought that there wouldn't be much open in Rome that day. It was a lovely trip. Our guide, Gulietta, was very fun and engaging.

The trip left early from Piazza del Poppolo, where we boarded a clean, comfortable bus. We rode for an hour or so and made a stop in a small town for restrooms, coffee, etc. It was a nice stop and you could even do a little shopping if you were so inclined.

Then we rode another hour or so on to Montepulciano, where we were met by our local guide, Gulia, who gave us a walking tour. I liked the tour, although I would have appreciated more time to shop in the local stores and less time talking about some fairly dry history. Even still, the town's charm is off the charts and the views can't be beat.

After the tour, we boarded our bus again and headed off to have lunch and wine tasting. The restaurant is also a winery and is run by two sisters whose ancestors have run the winery for generations. They were charming and entertaining hostesses.

Several of the reviews were very critical of the food, but, honestly, I think those folks may have been expecting Americanized Italian food rather than the real thing. Our meal was simple, but delicious. Appetizers included sliced meats, cheeses, bruschetta, bread and different truffle sauces to try. We were also served generous pours (and seconds if we wanted) of several reds and a white wine.

I'm not much of a red wine drinker, and the ones we had were way too strong for me, but I very much enjoyed the white we were served. Our main course was a simple pasta (pici - kind of like a thick spaghetti) with an amatriciana (red sauce with cheese and bacon). I thought it was scrumptious. Everything was made from scratch and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The Italians have a tradition of eating lentils on New Years Day, which is supposed to ensure financial good luck for the year (fingers crossed on that), so we were treated to a serving of lentils, which was my favorite part of the entire meal. Finally, we had dessert, which was biscotti served with a very sweet (but strong) wine for dipping. I nibbled on the biscotti and vowed to save room for gelato later.

After lunch, it was back on the bus for a quick visit to a lovely church (the name of which escapes me -- SO. MANY. CHURCHES!) and then on to brief visit to Pienza. Pienza's tourist district is located inside the ancient city walls and can be covered easily in an hour. I got some gelato, visited another church, took in the view and did some shopping before heading back to the bus.

The bus ride home seemed long and it was because we got caught in some pretty bad traffic coming back into Rome, causing us to arrive home late, but I didn't mind. It was a gorgeous trip and well worth it. If you don't have time in your Italian vacation to spend a few days in Tuscany, this tour is a great way to get a flavor for the region and kickstart your planning for your next visit!

In short, don't be dissuaded by the naysayers -- take the tour! :)

Full day
This was a great tour. It has little stops that are basically for good pictures and then lunch, and stops in two towns. I can’t remember the name of the last town we stopped in, but you HAVE to keep walking past the Main Street to see the amazing view it has! We went during Christmas time and it was the greenest most stunning view we saw all day. But you have to go find it yourself! Our tour guide was great as I am vegan, and my bf vegetarian and she just made sure we were taking care of for lunch. The lunch was the greatest meal i had had my entire trip. Make sure to bring some extra money because you WILL want to buy some things from that restaurant. SO GOOD.

Winter is still great!
Dec. 2019 • Couples
We were fortunate to have a extremely knowledgeable and articulate narrator to our tour- an absolute must to maximize the experience. We were blessed with winter sunshine and although there are still tourists, relatively it was a good time to visit. We would’ve enjoyed more cellar door time but we’d expect that from a more bespoke tour. Generally an enjoyable day and my favorite part was learning about the deep, ancient history that runs through the Tuscan soils. Enjoy my photo and thanks again for a great trip.

A full day in Tuscany, beautiful views and vistas.
Nov. 2019
This is a full day taking 12 hours starting from Piazza del Popolo in Rome, our guide was an American who had lived in Rome for a number of years so there was no problem understanding him and he had a wealth of knowledge and opinions on what wines to drink and the best eateries in Rome. Montepicano ia a delightful village set on the top of a hill overlooking the valley below. our trip coincided with the Christmas market which added another dimension to the trip. We also visited a local church with panoramic views and had lunch at a winery serving local food and wine. I don't drink wine but my Wife does and she was underwhelmed by it other than a dessert wine which was similar to port. The main course was a very thick spaghetti like pasta and it was one of the worst pasta dishes that I have had.
