Rome Off the Beaten Path, Including Appian Way Aqueducts and Jewish Ghetto
From US$68.35
Spark your intrigue of the Italian capital with a tour of Rome's lesser-known gems. Perfect for those who want to see the sites that the guidebooks sideline, this excursion visits tucked-away treasures, such as a pyramid and an ancient lie detector test, along with better-known  like the ancient Appian Way and the Jewish Ghetto. Even better: Numbers are capped at 15 for a small-group tour.
What to Expect
With your guide and group, start the tour with a walk into the heart of the Jewish Ghetto. Originating in the 16th century, the enclave is enshrined in Roman culture and is home to landmarks, such as the Colosseum-like Theatre of Marcellus (Teatro Marcello).

Swing past the Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verita), a face-like plaque that’s rumored to bite the hands of liars. Then, pause by Circus Maximus before you continue to the ancient Appian Way. Once the busiest road into Rome, the street is steeped in history. Hear tales of emperors and Spartacus, as you amble along the cobbles and pass into Aqueduct Park. Gaze into the Baths of Caracalla and strike a pose for photos from Janiculum Hill—it’s one of the best city vantage points.

Take in other highlights, such as a so-called optical illusion of St. Peter’s Basilica and Rome’s only pyramid. Then, work your way back to central Rome.

A Wonderful, Jam-Packed Morning!

Our guide, Roberta, was wonderful, friendly, personable and very knowledgeable. Thanks to our driver, too, for braving Roman traffic. Because we had wheels, we were able to see much more of Rome than otherwise would have been possible in a morning. We went all the...More

Fascinating tour, outstanding guide

We loved the smaller group size of 10 people; 30 had signed up for the tour, but instead of putting all of us in one large group, we were divided into 3 groups, each with our own guide. The Jewish Ghetto was fascinating and a...More

Very Interesting!

Melanie was terrific! She was noticeably limping, but chose to give the tour despite her injuries from an accident. She was cheerful, knowledgeable, and considerate. We learned so much, especially about the Jewish Ghetto. We highly recommend this tour!

Amazing history and entertaining guide

Julia of Walks of Italy was fantastic and entertained us with her history knowledge and myth stories. Amazing to hear and see the aqua ducts and hear the stores of about the Ghetto. Very easy to book through Trip Advisor.

Yes, we did walk along the Appian Way but it was fairly short, about 15 minutes because the tour takes in a lot of sights. I taken a number of tours with Walks of Italy and have been very happy with all of them. Great... More

Great answer by zizzle14. Just adding that the tour will end back at the starting point right at lunchtime, so if you want to sample some authentic Roman Jewish cuisine, you can walk a few blocks back to the ghetto and snag... More
