What to expect
Hop aboard your coach in Taormina and travel north to the Port of Milazzo. Board your motorboat and glide through the Tyrrhenian Sea to the island of Panarea, nestled in the UNESCO-listed Aeolian Archipelago. Enjoy time to explore the small, scenic island at your leisure. Wander the local shops in the whitewashed village, try the island fare at a café or take in views of the water from the beach. Afterward, reunite with your host and head across the water to Stromboli, named after its active volcano. Check out the black lava-sand beach and soak up additional free time to roam the village. Back on your boat, you can enjoy a light dinner as the sun sets (own expense). Top off your trip with an evening boat ride around the island to see Stromboli’s volcano in action. Head to a clear spot to view the crater of Sciara del Fuoco, where you witness bright, liquid lava explode into the night sky. Small eruptions occur regularly, so be sure to have your camera ready. After a full day of sightseeing, you are returned to Taormina.

Finally Lava!!!
Sep. 2020
First we arrived at Panarea. We made a walk through this beautiful island.
The ferry brought us to Stromboli. We swam at the beach. Back and the ferry, the captain saild to the other side of the island. Everyone on board looked at the vulcano, and finally..... lava!. It was a long and enjoyable excursion!!

Not to be missed
Oct. 2019
After having read some of the reviews, I decided not to waste my time on this trip. Luckily we had bad weather in Naxos and instead of doing nothing, decided to take the day trip. One of the most beautiful experiences ever, I definitely advise to visit the volcanic islands. If possible, consider staying a night or two. One of the few spots in Europe of serene beauty, working volcanoes that you become to love and not overcrowded.

Hi Diana, this is so true! The Aeolian Islands are truly amazing and consider that with SAT Group, you can get the transfer to reach them, overnight and come back on the next mini cruise, using us as a transfer company as well. No stress to get a transportation to Milazzo, no stress to get an hydroil to the islands, only relax with SAT Group! It is a great idea to spend a couple of days at the islands. Think about it! Stromboli made it worth it. Amazing sight. A long day though, so probably a bit much for young children.

Great day trip
Jul. 2019 • Couples
We had a great experience in our trip to Panarea and Stromboli. As others have already pointed out, this is a whole-day excursion: we left Taormina at 10:00 in the morning and returned to our hotel at midnight. The bus to Milazzo was comfortable and out guide very helpfully explained every step of our tour so we knew what to expect. We then got into the ferry and travelled to Panarea where we had lunch at a place recommended by our tour guide, we walked around, took pictures, enjoyed the beauty of the island and then moved on to Stromboli. We swam at the beach near the port, stayed for an hour and a half on the island and then moved on to the highlight of the trip: the volcano. We were lucky enough to see small explosions and lava from the ferry and the whole experience was spectacular. We stayed in the ferry for about 45 minutes I think, which was plenty of time to enjoy the view of the volcano. We then headed back to Milazzo and into our bus for the ride back. The whole experience with SAT was very pleasant and smooth - you can tell they are professionals. Our guide was very friendly and willing to give us tips as to what to do when on the islands etc. It was a long and enjoyable excursion!

Too crowded
Boat was too crowded .. We had to run and grab seats as quick as possible. Not ideal for families with small children or the elderly... This appears to be the standard for all tours however. The pier (where boat pick us up and drop us off) was also crowded as the islands only had one port. If we returned, we would do a private tour - not on the days the group tours are. Stromboli was great, panarea just a filler island in our opinions.

Hi alinovsky, the scenario you describe is related to the peak of the season. Aeolian Islands are very much requested during July/August and being quite small, crowds are difficult to be avoided. We strongly suggest you to visit them in a different period of the year. You will discover a totally different scenario. All the very best, Guest Relations Manager SAT Group

Don't miss this
Jul. 2019 • Couples
Stromoboli erupting after dark is a truly memorable sight. We were blessed with calm weather and a not too crowded boat. Our guide gave a good short walking tour on both Paarea and Stromboli but it was the sight of Stromboli erupting every few minutes, and the flow of red hot lava down the side of the island that is an indelible image. Suitable for all ages. Don't miss it!

Dear PaulHo, you were very lucky indeed, as Stromboli has been erupting in a very spectacular way since the beginning of July and, as a plus, the sea conditions are now excellent. What else to ask?

Love reading the reviews on this day tour ... I agree with some of the reviewers comments - make sure you understand what the tour is offering before you book it. It is a very long day, you do need to be able to spend time chilling in a beautiful place, and probably most of all you need to be aware of those people to whom the rules don't apply - mainly the (no) smoking in most areas of the boat and the sign which suggests that parents should take care of their children at all times. Neither of these are the responsibility of the tour company but just a sad reflection of some people's behaviour. The company have done their best to control access to the boat, but were defeated by some determined people. Disappointed that once we started the return journey, some parents decided that they would relax whilst letting their children run around the decks, even the open lower deck. Had to laugh too when people actually climbed over the rope which had been put in place to protect them as we headed back into port.

None of this distracted from a super day - the coach met us spot on time at Taormina bus station, and we headed up to Milazzo with constant information being provided to us by our guide (Giuseppe, I think) in English, Italian and German. He also offered short tours on both Panarea and Stromboli and a wealth of details about the geology of the islands. I've been to Stromboli before, and my husband has to take uphill at his own pace, so we just did our own thing.

Panarea has quite a few restaurants, cafes and bars, all with great views of Stromboli - I guess that's what most people have come to see - so we chilled over a light lunch and watched the small ash eruptions from the volcano. Also enjoyed seeing all the cats (a happy reminder of my stay on Stromboli 4 years ago). Nice to watch the boats around the island too.

The boat returned to port and took us through the amazing rock formations between Panarea and Stromboli - the captain ensures that the boat moves so that everyone gets the opportunity of a good view of everything, so be patient, and if you can't get a good view at first, he'll turn the boat and you'll have chance for that photograph!

So, on to Stromboli - we opted for food first and them a slow walk to Stromboli town - more cats, another glass of wine. No hardship having to spend a couple of hours here.

As I mentioned earlier, the crew tried to hold people back to avoid a stampede to the boat to get the 'best seat', but some determined people made a break for it. Again, as I said before, the captain ensures that everyone gets a good view by regularly turning the boat, you will get that selfie if you are desperate for it!!

We knew that Stromboli had been active the previous week, and I warned my husband that it could be quiet - it is a natural feature after all. I'd been timing the ash ejections when we were on Panarea (a little like timing contractions!!) and it seemed very much like the last time I was in Stromboli, around 3 an hour, possibly a few more.

Little did we know what a show the volcano would put on, an amazing evening with almost constant eruptions and a lava flow that made it to the sea. Should have realised when some of the crew came on deck, this was not going to be a regular evening on Stromboli.

Just stunning, a great day out - guess I'd have been disappointed with no activity, but it is a natural phenomenon so go with low expectations, and you won't be disappointed.

Happy to pay the eco tax, happy to spend time and money on the islands, these people make their living from the tourists, and it's actually a great way to spend a couple of hours with lunch, wine and a volcano to watch.

After the 'fireworks' the boat headed back promptly to Milazzo (though I'd have been happy to stay there all night) and we had a great coach journey back to Taormina, did it in good time, despite drop offs. We got back to our hotel around 12:30 a.m. - I'm an early bird, not a night owl, but I enjoyed the trip so much.

Thank you to the guide & coach driver (I am in awe of his driving up Via Luigi Pirandello), the Captain & crew of Aeolian Queen, and SAT for pulling this tour together. Most of all, thank you to Mother Nature for the fireworks.

Dear amand..., what an amazing review you have shared...we are really impressed because you are describing every single detail. Your comments about the boarding are very useful for us to know more about passengers' behaviour. What really touches our heart is the description you do about your feelings on the islands, the calm and relax that you enjoy and finally the spectacular view over the Sciara del Fuoco with the stunning explosions and lava flow. Surely, you were lucky, you have witnessed an incredible show prepared by Mother Nature for you. Please receive our deepest gratitude for this comment. All the very best to you and your family. Special Place
We booked this tour to experience places that are truly magical and that is what we got. However, the trip was not quite as advertised in the literature. For example, don't believe you'll be travelling by private motor boat, you won't. More like a small, fast ferry. We did not know either it was a hop on, hop off service for a couple of the other islands. Whilst we got to view these from the boat, we didn't actually get to our first destination until mid afternoon, (we'd set out at 10am)! Panarea is beautiful and calm and lovely to stroll around but could not go too far due to our departure time to Stromboli. However long the day, seeing this magnificent feat of nature and watching it explode was an experience we won't ever forget. Our tour guide, Alfredo, was very knowledgeable and is fluent in several languages so no danger of not understanding the instructions etc. Don't be put off by this review, just be prepared for a very long day, and no matter how warm the weather in the day, take some warm clothes for the journey back as the boat was very cold.

What's wrong with you people?
Sometimes people defy belief; to get to a remote island requires time on a boat.
The boat can only sail from a safe place which won't come to you you have to go to it.
Both the boat and coach are income generating so they will travel as fast as is safe, if it takes 90 minutes to get to the port then you can guarentee that is the quickest route. This is underlined by the fact that your ticket price covers 2 toll roads.
The same goes for the boat, it won't dawdle nor compromise safety.
If you can't while away 2 and a half hours over lunch/ wine putting the world to rights, then why are you even in Italy let alone Sicily?
Why complain about a beach when you've come to see a volcano?
Ah yes on the subject of volcano's it took me a while to understand that the reality is not quite commesurate with the pictures I drew at school; I think I worked it out at the sagely age of 14. For those who have yet to face up to this fact have a lifetime of dissapointment ahead of you; best stay at home.
Sure for me the highlight of was naturally hoping for eruptions and the travel and downtime were all part of a build-up of anticipation.
At this point I should apologise on behalf of the tour operator
I notice that they were remise by their lack of effort in not making it dark earlier and it was only by the innovative and brave Captains snap decision to chase a fantastic sunset that mutiny was averted.
By far the most dissapointing part of the experience is that I found myself in the company of many excited folk clammering for valuable vulcan viewing. I'm dissapointed because I thought I might be the only one; yes people are people and will become self centred but only the ignorant fail to understand and forgive this.
My heart goes out to the chump who claims to have stood for ten hours on a 90 minute crossing. As it does for somone who missed out on the 'true and genuine' Instagram experience, oh reality is such a let-down (sad face emoticom).
In true Michael Fish fashion once again a Human being failed to call nature to heal by not commanding time, space and holes in mountains what spit fire.
Me on the other hand really quite enjoyed the day.
We paid a good price and we got our moneys worth.
I got to spend 2 1/2 hours eating and drinking with my girlfriend on an Island in the Mediteranean (twice in one day).
I got to climb to an altitude with an amazing view.
I saw and heard a volcano erupting but only after seeing an unspoilt sunset into the sea.
I would advise any people who have had a negative experience of this phenominal experience to stay away from the Northern Lights or a Taj Mahal sunrise/Sunset as you would likely be dissapointed before you even get there.
Me I only nearly didn't give this 5 stars because the wonderfully genuine and accomadating guide failed to carry me up to my apartment.
Cest la vie.
This is an experience I have been enriched by; I loved it.
For those of you out there who fail to take up the rare opportunity to spend nearly three hours eating and drinking with a loved one; you have no soul.
Shame on you who by your own ignorance failed to better yourselves.

Excellent.
Have to say I disagree with many of the reviews here. Depends what you want really. If you just want to pop over and see a volcano that erupts on demand then you will be disappointed. But if you want to spend time exploring new places...perfect. it was a long day, we were picked up at 0930 and didn't get home till midnight but enjoyed every minute. We were picked up in Giardini Naxos. Picking up others along the way we went along the coastline. Took about 2 hours but the views were lovely. Boarded at mid day. Trip to Panarea takes about an hour. You then have a couple of hours to kill. Not much there and I can understand that on a not so nice day that would be too much. You can take a taxi (10 min) or walk (45 min) to the beach. We elected to explore the small waterfront then had a long and leisurely lunch in the sun. Lovely food, recommend Da Carola antipasti. Back on the boat for an approx 45 min journey to Stromboli taking in some of the rock formations on the way. Again another couple of hours on the Island. Recommend walking up to the church for fantastic views . Handily next to the church is a lovely pizzeria/ gelateria Ingrid. Again recommend. Shambles back down in time for a quick drink at the waterfront hotel. Board the boat again, taken out around the lighthouse and out to chase the sunset. Then there is some sitting and waiting for twilight to see if the volcano erupts. We were very lucky,we had several explosions. But if you don't, its nature, I still would not have been disappointed in the trip overall. Then back to Milazzo, coach waiting to drop us home. All of our guides were multilingual and very knowledgeable. Highly recommended

Hi mrssnips66, it seems you have been working in tourism! Your review is so detailed and professional and is the best promotion for our company. It is true, the best thing is to taste the whole experience and not only looking for the final goal. In this case you were lucky and you saw the eruptions, but, as you underline, the whole mini cruise has so much to offfer and represents and beautiful souvenir. Regarding things to do, a part from strolling and discovering, in May the islands are very quite and the season there is not started yet. At the same time now it is the best time to visit since it is not so crowded. All the best, Guest Relations Manager SAT Group
