About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Guyver2k0 contributionsVery active whales!AMAZING TOUR! We saw 5 highly active whales jumping out of the water, diving deep and smacking the water with their tails! Mark and... I forget his name (sorry) were amazing tour guides! Apparently it was the most active the whales were all year. This was a dream for my Fiancee and a surreal experience for both of us! I'm really late on this review as we went July 12th 2024. It was the day before we flew back to Canada and honestly, was the best way to end a trip. Oh! and we saw dolphins surrounded our boat! I will definetly do this tour again when I go back. Muito obrigado Picos de Aventura outre vez!Written September 14, 2024
- Passport875660 contributionswonderful underground explorationeven if I was by myself and it was Sunday morning, I was able to visit a really nice cave in Pico. the guide was amazing, had so many stories, a great great guy. 100% recommend. his passion for his island, Pico, is almost a religion. exceptional!Written September 10, 2024
- Navigator555688697560 contributionsFelt like AquamanThe trip was great. The staff was really nice, pro active, always there to answer our questions. The organisation was very clear about the fact that they did not promise that we would see whales, but that we would see some sort of sea mammals - or our money back. In a way this was sort of exhilarating to know that sea mammals are still free to wander wherever they want and we can be fortunate enough to see them. We saw dolphins and turtles, a flying fish and everything was great. Warning: wear sunscreen :) (you will get a sunburn for sure)Written September 10, 2024

- season c0 contributionsLast whale watching trip for us!Honestly it was pretty boring and uncomfortable. First the positives: the water was truly stunning - crystal clear and deep blue. And of course the whales and dolphins. The negatives: everything else. Two hours of full speed boating - 1 hour out and 1 our back with probably about 30 minutes of time to enjoy the whales and dolphins. The day we went out the waves were just brutal so the 2 hours of full speed boating was not even remotely enjoyable. The boat was crowded and uncomfortable seating. In fact, there was no seating for the 3 of us together up top or the front stadium seating so we ended up sitting in the back near the engineer by ourselves. It was so loud and we had the smell of non stop fuel fumes from the engine. However, that ended up being a park when numerous people upstairs started throwing up. They do not sell any food or drinks so come prepared.Written September 10, 2024

- gcollino100 contributionsGreat experience! We had a great experience on our dolphin and whale watching tour with our two kids (4 and 7 years old). The team was very prepared and extremely professional in how the prepared us for the trip and handled us on the boat. The trip is nice, the situation of being in open waters in the middle of the Atlantic should not be underestimated. If you do not suffer from excessive sea sickness definitely worth it!Written September 4, 2024
- U476SFkatec0 contributionsBeautiful hikeThis hike to the lake offers stunning views and is a truly beautiful experience. The trail is moderately difficult, with some steep sections at the beginning, so proper hiking shoes are essential. I'd also recommend bringing a raincoat, just in case (we needed it). Our guide was friendly, and we were provided a lunch snack. However, I would have appreciated more time at the lake, as we felt rushed throughout the visit. One downside was that the tour started nearly 50 minutes late due to a delayed van, which was frustrating.Written September 2, 2024

A great tour! Our guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the the island of São Miguel and the whales / dolphins as a whole. She was able to answer all the questions we asked and was very considerate with my mother’s dietary restrictions (due to the lunch box). Getting to see the islet was amazing and the tour provided snorkel mask & tube. I really wish I remembered our guides names because they were amazing! I believe it was a J or M. They smiled the entire time and you could tell they really loved their jobs. They spoke multiple languages and the boat driver was safe but not sluggish. We will definitely do this tour (or another one with the same company) again!
Notes:
-if sandwiches are not something you like maybe bring your own lunch
-I’d suggest bringing water shoes and an umbrella/hat/shade for the islet!

What a great experience! The skipper and marine biologists were exceptional which gave us the opportunity to see hundreds of dolphins and even a humpback whale. The dolphins were on both sides of the boat with many young ones with their mothers.
The boat ride was adventurous as it is powerful and fast! The waves would spray water onto us but the tour includes wet gear.
The perfect morning experience!

We chose the more intimate zodiac jet boat experience without regrets. Loved the back support and horse-saddle seating...jets you quickly to more sites from spotters.
Experienced 5 species (3 whale, 2 dolphin), many of these sightings were multiple locations and often. From pairs, pods, to babes learning to jump. Also dolphin stampedes at times! We were so very lucky and staff were making sure you had an awesome experience. Pods of Pilot Whales were icing on the cake near end. Lunch was so nice and a chance to visit with others on round tables. We enjoyed the snorkel experience inside Vila Franca more than we expected. So clear and you could really see the layered collapse and experience nice deep ash in parts. Overall... this experience was THE top experience on our visit to Sao Miguel. Thank you crew!

We cannot say how good of an experience we had whale watching with this tour operator. They were very organized and informative.
After a short time in the water, we were seeing whales and dolphins. We were able to see the chart in their office of how often various groups found each species, and it looks very rare to go without seeing plenty of animals.
The biologist with us was very knowledgeable, and the boat was way more comfortable than it looked at first glance. I’d have booked the whale watching portion multiple times.
Our experience was very lackluster during the second half of the day. Without dwelling on it too much, the food was very bad—think hamburger helper and watery potato soup. It was like a make shift buffet set up in a conference center.
The island portion of the day was ok—it was a bit crowded and you had to wait on a ferry for quite a while. The island tour is relaxing, but for my money, I’d want to be whale watching again during that time.

We had a very nice day and saw lots of dolphins. Unfortunately there was no whales to see that day. The waves got at the end too high for a safe sailing, we got troubles with the boat and had to be rescued to a larger boat. Exciting day. The people from Picos de adventura handled the situation very good and no one got hurd

This was a wonderful experience. Our guide was a marine biologist who clearly had a great love and enthusiasm for the island and marine life that she was eager to share. She was informative and fun. We saw adult and juvenile sperm whales, and at one point our boat was surrounded by Atlantic dolphins swimming and jumping all around us. The afternoon was spent picnicking (bag lunch provided) on Vila Franca Islet, where we could walk or sun ourselves on the rock cliffs, and swim/snorkel in the clear turquoise water. A relaxing and exhilarating day!

The weather was threatening and the guides took us really far out , away from the coast. On the way back, we were all pelted by the waves and cold. It seemed they were filling the time, instead of paying attention to the guests.

A great adventure. Unfortunately our boat got out of harbour and wasn't running correctly so we had to go back in .they kept us up to date and quickly transferred us to new boats . We got to the whale area in about 20 minutes and where lucky enough to see 6 sperm whales Amazing. Then a bumpy ride to get lunch which was really nice followed by snorkeling in islet. Would highly recommend . All staff where very helpful.

We would do this full day trip again! Lara and Marcello were great. Professional, knowledgable, engaged about the animals and helpful to everyone. They were concerned over everyone’s safety, comfort and enjoyment. We were lucky and saw a sei whale, sperm whale, portuguese man o’war and so many dolfins. Snorkeling at the islet was clear and full of fish. Great for all ages but if you have older teens, do this tour. Ours loved it.

Hi, I am trying to book for my family with three kids, 5, 7, 10. It seems that the computer shows not available if I add my 5 year old in the trip.

What kind of boat? Are pregnant women allowed or the ride is too rough?
Written September 1, 2021
Hi Rebecca. Our ride was on Terceira island, not S. Miguel. Anyway, it was a "zebro", ie. a semirigid inflatable boat, max. capacitry 8 people. Definitely not a ride for pregnant women. Other providers of similar services offer much larger boats, with 50 or 60 tourist capacity; these are not so exciting but the ride will be much smoother.
