If you’re pressed for time in Lisbon but want an in-depth look at its Alfama quarter, this short-but-comprehensive tour delivers and saves you from getting lost or missing sights. Plus, you skip some of the district’s steep streets by using its hillside elevators. Your walk passes St. George’s Castle and Lisbon Cathedral; covers Alfama’s history and fado music; and includes time at one of Lisbon’s highest viewpoints.
What to Expect
Meet your guide in central Lisbon and head into hilly Alfama. This history-steeped neighborhood is one of the Portuguese capital’s most colorful, and is rare for having survived the city’s 1755 earthquake intact.

Ride an elevator up toward hilltop St. George’s Castle and admire its turrets from the outside. Then, venture deeper into Alfama, following your guide through streets so narrow you can touch both sides with outstretched arms.

Hear about this original working-class district, still popular with fishing families, and perhaps see some roadside stalls hawking fish.

Admire the 12th-century cathedral and pass the National Pantheon, where historical figures including presidents and famous fado singers are buried.

Visit one of Lisbon’s highest viewpoints, the Senhora do Monte Miradouro, to admire the bird’s-eye views, and descend through the lanes, listening for fado music from the taverns, and learning about its roots.

Your tour concludes at Lisbon Cathedral.

It’s probably better to go to the starting point, the group makes its way along various streets so would be easy to miss them.

The Alfama tour is not free. It's €14. As for the hours and other information, you can check their website by googling "Sandemans New Europe Lisbon." Sorry, they don't allow links in here.
