- DobiDo10 contributionsBest jeep ride in MadieraWowwww ! Amazing full day jeep tour great and special jeep and the guide was so amazing Patient, friendly, fluent English , and gave us an amazing experience Our best day in Madiera !! Highly recommendedWritten March 12, 2025
- Meander4708670 contributionsSunrise hike to Porta de Sao Lourenco - amazing! We went on a private sunrise hike to Porta de Sao Lourenco. The organisation of the trip by Nico was excellent; he was very responsive and helpful and even collected us from where we were staying (due to the early start). He handed us over to the guide, David, in Funchal. David took us to Sao Lourenco and led the hike. He was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the flora and fauna in Sao Lourenco and the island more generally. His English was excellent - far better than our Portuguese! He set a pace taking account of our abilities and we stopped for views and photos along the way. The changing landscape and light were amazing - we were lucky with the weather! We had a break at the ‘oasis’ - listening to hoopoes and watching green finches and my daughter even went for a dip in the cold - but very clear - sea. We headed back and bumped into some people who had been with David on a hike earlier in the week which they had also enjoyed. David drove us back to where we were staying and provided interesting commentary on the island as we went - we even stopped for some freshly made poncha! All in all it was a great expedition and we recommend UpMountain wholeheartedly.Written March 11, 2025
- 661evans0 contributionsOutstanding Experience & Incredible Guides! It's been 3 years since our Jeep tour with Nico and my girlfriend and I still consider it to be the best vacation day we've ever had together - and we've had a lot! We're still blown away by Nico's enthusiasm, professionalism, extensive knowledge of all things Madeira, sense of humor, off-road driving skills and exceptional ability to adapt to our interests. Seriously, Nico is a rare talent and his company offers a truly world class tour experience. Even if the weather isn't ideal for sightseeing/hiking/etc, this company will make sure you have an amazing day. We signed up for the tour mostly to see the beautiful mountain scenery and hike, but it was cloudy/rainy in the high terrain for most of the day. This was no problem at all for Nico. He used his impressive knowledge of the island to find us good view points despite the weather and, more importantly, talked us through many alternative activities that 1) we'd enjoy and 2) wouldn't be affected by the weather. The day was jam packed with breathtaking natural scenery, authentic cultural experiences, and engaging conversations with Nico about the island's history, economy, agriculture, and more (Nico's knowledge of the island is staggering - he's like a walking, talking encyclopedia with a great sense of humor). Instead of hiking, we wound up having one of the best (and most scenic) meals of our lives at a seafood restaurant on the beach (Nico left us to eat by ourselves - he had an uncanny ability to sense when we wanted to engage with him versus have our alone time). No way we would've found this spot or learned so much about Madeira without Nico. If you have a day in Madeira and want to explore the island, a Jeep tour with Up Mountain Madeira will blow you away!Written January 5, 2025
- jeanieh850 contributionsMadeira delivered splendidly!Edgar was friendly and professional. From Picking us up at the port, sipping wine, explaining everything about his beautiful island, 4wheel driving, site seeing, you name it, he delivered all extremely well! Thank you, Edgar, for a memorable day on Madeira!Written December 28, 2024
- paulbT3581RK0 contributionsGreat Personalized Service. Nico and his Team fully deserve their fantastic Reviews!Amazing hike, albeit not one for the faint-hearted! LOTS of steps! Upmountain cannot be faulted. Nico was delighted to offer a totally personalised walk for just 2 people, with transport to and from hotel. All smoothly booked online from UK. Our driver and guide for the day was David. He was great. Friendly, knowledgable, polite, always alert to our safety. Scenery was magnificent. Whole Experience was exceptional. From personal experience of previous visits to the Island, infinitely better than the mass "touristy" group walks offered by the bigger operators. Worth every bit of e. 285 cost for the day. So pleased we stumbled upon Upmountain when searching online from UK, with all other companies approached seemingly totally disinterested in meeting our requirements.Written December 27, 2024
- drmetter0 contributionsWonderful tour!My friends and I had a wonderful day with our tour guide Filipe. He was knowledgeable, kind, and very fun to spend a day with exploring the beautiful island. We loved all the stops we went to, each one better than the last. Communication and booking ahead of time was straightforward. Would definitely recommend UpMountain Madeira for a tour!Written November 16, 2024
- K597LFalexr0 contributionsBest experience with a tour guideWe had the absolute BEST experience with UpMountain Madeira— their crew has been FUN, flexible, and so knowledgeable. They have taken us all over on multiple excursions since we have been here this week. HIGHLY recommend David for all the hikes and Diego for the jeep tour. We did 25 fountains at the end of the week and we did a full day off road tour another day.Written November 15, 2024
- Odyssey138676195830 contributionsExcellent!Excellent off-road safari experience to west/north of Madeira. Standing in an open roof army jeep going through narrow streets of little villages and wild forests up in the mountains was an unforgettable experience. Tobias was excellent guide and driver!Written November 13, 2024
- AnthonyG18140 contributionsFantastic walk with David! We had an absolutely fantastic time with David on this guided hike. We only ended up doing it because we tried to book the guided walking route PR1 Vereda do Areeiro through Viator with Up Mountain, and had the booking rejected. We initially couldn’t understand why, but booked a self-guided walk on that route (just transport to/from the walk). David was then kind enough to reach out later via WhatsApp, completely unprompted, to explain that the PR1 route was closed and any booking for it would result in disappointment! He offered us this alternative and we were delighted to accept, and so glad we did, cancelling our other booking, and he was very accommodating re the only date we could do, running the hike for just four of us even though there would normally be 8. The hike was stunningly beautiful, David was great company and very knowledgeable, and we got to see a beautiful sunrise with stunning weather; the landscape was so dramatic I’m sure it would be beautiful in most weathers! We got a great swim at the end too. David even took us for a “proper” Poncha local drink at a local place he knew on the way home, as we were assured that the one we had in our hotel would not have been a true taste of this drink! A wonderful trip we can highly recommend to anyone with Up Mountain, and if you’re lucky, with David!Written November 1, 2024

- tricia280 contributionsWell worth it. Best shore excursion on our cruise!Just finished an amazing tour with Up Mountain Madeira. The highlight of our cruise. Flat tire was handled with no issue and the true test of a company is how they handle issues. Our guide was informative and made sure we got to see everything we wanted to see. Wish we had more time but our cruise made such a short stop here. They definitely made sure we were able make the most of our day and get back to the ship in plenty of time.Written October 20, 2024
- 347ullap0 contributionsFun and fast day in MadeiraThank you! Kiitos! Tack! Gracias! Our jeep-safari with Diogo was the very best part of our holiday. Day was warm and it feels so good to drive open roof all over the island. We went many places, Pico do Arieero, Santana, Porto da Cruz and of course off-road. It was really nice to visit real Santana-house and found out how spacious it was, and lovely lady who lives there. Maybe I would like to go next time somewhere less tourists (Arieero is nowadays full of us!) Diogo has soooo good sense of humor and he speak very good english. He also told us living in Madeira, wages, prices, school etc. which is very interesting. Booking was easy and Nico answered my questions quickly. Overall very good day. We highly recommend Upmountainmadeira to everyone who likes jeep-safarisWritten October 6, 2024

- Rovadia0 contributionsExcellent Madeira Safari half day tour!We were in Madeira on a cruise and did a half day jeep tour with Up Mountain Madeira. Our ship's schedule was changed at the last minute and Nico from Up Mountain Madeira was very accommodating with rescheduling our tour. Tiago, our great guide, picked us up at the port and took us to a few beautiful places on the island like the Cabo Girao skywalk and also did some off-roading in an amazing forest. We really enjoyed our day. Thank you!Written October 4, 2024

A really lovely experience combining a visit to Camara de Lobos and then off road up into the mountain first to see the vineyards of Henrique and Henrique. Finishing with a trip to ‘The View’ the aptly named roadside cafe where they served superb snacks at very reasonable cost. The whole trip had been changed from the original due to the recent forest fires but we weren’t disappointed. Many thanks for a great trip

Had a half day 4x4 tour with John our tour guide, who was very informative, not only pointing out local information but informative about Madeira generally. He told us about the local produce in peoples gardens and showed us some brilliant scenic view points. We stopped off for local Ponca (very potent)at a roadside cafe, then up 4x4 ing in the forest. Well worth the expense. #safarimadeira, #john

From start to finish we spent a great half day tour with our guide Diago. We were picked up at our hotel (on time) and then a drive in a 4x4 old army jeep to the beautiful fishing village of Camara de Lobos where a famous British Prime Minister did some painting. We were given plenty of time to wonder around and take in the scenery. Next was a drive high up to the mountains where the view of the Valley of the Nuns was spectacular. This was followed by a quick stop off to sample a local rum drink called Poncha (you get to watch it being made with fresh ingredients) before we had a great laugh with some off-road driving. Our final stop was at Cabo Girao, one of the highest sea cliffs in the world at nearly 2000 feet. There is a glass walkway for those brave enough with some breath-taking views.
Initially I was a bit worried booking this trip as my wife suffers from vertigo, but when it was all over I asked how she would rate the trip and she gave it 5 out of 5. She was very nervous to start with especially as we drove up towards the mountains, but 10/10 to Diago. From start to finish he made her feel at ease with his safe driving, excellent wit and perhaps the poncha helped ha ha. I never expected in a million years that my wife would stand on the glass walkway but she did do. Diago was very knowledgeable, especially about the history of the island and it's vegetation. A must see trip and if you're lucky enough to get Diago it will be the icing on the cake.

We found Nico via another website, and luckily for us, he was still free 2 days before our arrival. We paid the same price for 2 of us that would have been paid by 4, and that's very understandable and reasonable. We were very happy with that, because we had the entire jeep to ourselves. He collected us from right outside the cruise terminal. Had Nico had another enquiry we would have been happy to share. Nico was excellent, very friendly and a very knowledgable local. His passion for his home is palpable. He's an excellent driver too, both on and off road. He was very open to our requests and would have done whatever we wanted during our time with him. It was a half day tour and we had an excellent time - so much so that we are back in September with our daughter and have already booked him again! The glass platform was probably the highlight of the tour, together with the visit to a local cafe for the local pochin! Well off the usual tourist route! He was also able to give us an excellent recommendation on where to go to get Madeira wine in Funchal. All in all, excellent and we're very grateful for a very enjoyable morning.

A great half day tour of the local area. Picked up from our hotel, with only an additional 2 people joining us it made it a very personal tour. At this point I must say that Edgar was a fantastic guide/driver, his local knowledge was second to none. The tour took us up the hills and into the mist at the top. On the way up you see fantastic views of Funchal town and the surrounding area. Without spoiling you with the details, there are a few surprises en-route. Edgar not has a huge amount of local knowledge, but also has a wicked sense of humour, great command of the English language. We stopped in a very small mountain village for a “REAL” home made Poncha, what a difference from the hotel version. The rum used was from the sugar cane and had a unique aroma. Nun’s valley was breathtaking, as was the view from Cabo Girao, a must see. The small fishing village of Camara de Lobos was a lovely place to stop with its fishing boats on their moorings in the small harbour surrounded by local restaurants and bars. The off road route through the hills and down to the coast was great fun, hang on tight. All in all, this was an extremely well planned tour with a fantastic guide in Edgar, I would recommend this tour, and the company to anyone, personal service from a local business with a genuine aim to please its customers. A huge thank you to Nico, the owner of the business, who went the extra mile to accommodate our timing on the island. We will be back to Madeira to see more of the island with Up Mountain Madeira.

We came to Funchal with almost no plan what to do in the next few days. And then we found Up Mountain Madeira. Nico replied shortly after we send our query and we arranged a tour with pick up around 100m from our hostel (we book on Monday a tour for Wednesday).
We chose a 4x4 tour (Vineyards and Poncha – Jeep Tour to the Vineyards, Nuns Valley View and Cabo Girao). This was the perfect choice. Our host, Ricardo, proved to be an excellent guide, a superb driver (you will appreciate that on steepy roads of Madeira) and a man devoted to local heritage. In 4 hours we managed to see some staples of the Island and tried great poncha pescador. The views were stunning. Even though the weather wasn't the best we still enjoyed the tour very much.
The tour was worth every penny.

I booked this for my partners birthday and I can honestly say it was worth it. Our tour guide (Diego) was so funny and had us all laughing along the way. It is a great way to explore Madeira away from the tourism and the information Diego shared was so interesting. I would highly recommend anyone who comes to Madeira to book this trip. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We booked the excursion independently after arriving by cruise ship. Nico was waiting for us at appointed time with a very comfortable jeep waiting for us at appointed time. This was the best excursion experience we ever had. Our driver Ricardo is very easy going, funny and informative. He brought us through the usual tourist points of interest AND then brought us off road along mud tracks through forests - explaining all the vegetation and providing plenty of time for questions and photos. All 8 of us on the excursion loved it and the value for money was amazing. Congratulations to Nico and team for a memorable excursion.

This was one of the best days out on the island with the family. 5 of us, 2 adults and a 7, 12 and 15 year old.
Nico could see the kids were excited and changed the route to go off road first which we loved. The route was beautiful and Nico our driver knew so much about the island and his enthusiasm and knowledge were admirable.
Stopping along the way, smelling, tasting and feeling in touch with the incredible scenery so closely was amazing. Nico took us to a poncha bar in the hills. They were so accommodating and nice and the beer and poncha was so much better than down in Funchal itself.
This trip absolutely made the week for us, so much so we called Nico to arrange another half day trip for us which again was fantastic !!! I will certainly be booking with him the next time we go. Thanks Nico 👍🏻

Cannot recommend Up Mountain more highly. Accommodated a very last minute booking (made the night before via WhatsApp for a 9.30am pick up the next day! We had a private tour for half a day and went to some spectacular viewpoints, as well as ‘Churchill Bay’. Our guide was so knowledgeable and shared so much interesting information about Madeira.
