I've snorkeled in various places around the world including the Great Barrier reef but as I aged (now 77), I was apprehensive about trying scuba. Amelio is an excellent, affable instructor and was very thorough and careful during my 2.5 hours with him. First, he checks out beginners in the natural tidal pools before a "backstage" tour of the aquarium, then the highlight of entering the aquarium's main tank. Spouse accompanied us on the tour and took pictures through the aquarium's viewing windows. Make a reservation as soon as you arrive in Porto Moniz because the limited slots fill up quickly.Written November 14, 2022

In addition to the fact that the person who explained everything to us was very helpful and careful, the dive itself was spectacular. First we swam in the natural pool, next to the aquarium, where it was possible to see their natural habitat, and then we swam inside the aquarium. An incredible experience I can say for sure, we observed several sea species and swam side by side with them. An experience I will never forget and definitely a "must do" in Madeira Island.Written August 5, 2020

The kids were very happy to dive in the natural pool first and after that in the aquarium along little sharks, stingrays and other fishes. What made the experience really amazing was the time with Abilio and Peter. Abilio has a great sense of humour and enthusiasm for diving- you feel it and this spirit was passed to our girls. When you are in Porto Moniz and into an adventure - we would recommend this experience warmly... 😀Written July 17, 2019

I Bought this experience for my husband & friend. They both have padi but this is not needed, everything is provided and no experience necessary.
It was a great time for them and for us watching, we were warmly welcomed by Abilio who delivered a really interesting experience with patience, knowledge and fun.
Highly recommend - very good value!

Amazing and caring guide who was patient and speaks fluent english. He ensured that every diver was comfertable with the depth of the aquarium and controlling / manouvering inside of it. All the fishes were friendly and pettable. The temperature of the water was good (around 20 degrees) and it seems like they take good care of the fishes. Defentely a must to try if you are in the area.

The whole experience was amazing! First we got a personal tour through the aquarium and Abílio gave some explanations about the fishes. Then we picked up the diving gear and went to the natural swimming pool outside for the first trial dive. The fishes we saw there were pretty nice already. Afterwards we went back to the aquarium for the actual aquarium dive. Abílio is an amazing instructor showing different fishes and even shows which ones want to be petted! All fishes including the sharks are super chill. My husband and I are not new to diving but I often have issues with decompression in my ears. Abílio was super patient and even managed to bring me to the bottom in 6 meters depth which was impossible for me to do until yesterday.

Abilio, and the flow, and the facilities make this a once in a lifetime event. As a previous diver this was like 10 diving classes in one. Not only do you get the experience of being that close to all the fish and coral you also get the experience of being in the ocean as he does the initial training out there and that is a live event. One of the best experiences I've had, and have dived in Turkey, Korea, and Japan and Abilio makes it fun ….. the best of what nature has to offer. My only advice is to go, go, go

Scuba diving was always something that was on my bucket list, now it can be ticked off. I want to take the opportunity to thank Abilio for his excellent training and ensuring that the experience was one of the most memorable of my life.
The whole experience was very professionally structured, but Abilio made it a relaxed and enjoyable experience. He was most patient and always was giving encougement so that I was never stressed.
The two and a half hours passed very quickly, as it does when you are enjoying yourself, with lots packed into the program. A tour of the aquarium before the scuba training, then out to the lava pools to do your first dive, lots of sealife to see and interact with. Next a quick tour behind the scenes of the aquarium before the main event.
The dive in the aquarium among the sharks, manta rays, moray eels, parrot fish, groupers an many more was beyond description and the time passed all too quickly.
The icing on the cake was my wife was able to share the experience with me and record it for posterity.
Once again a big thanks to Abilio and Micheal for making our time at the aquarium such a memorable experience. If you visit Porto Moniz it will be the highlight of your holiday

What a great experience - both for an experienced diver (whenever do have the chance to dive in an aquarium?) loads of. Info’s about the technic of the aquarium ab details about the fish in it. Abilio is a very skilled diver, providing professional support for non- divers to get an idea about this cool sport! Still Abilio is very friendly , open-hearted, you come as a guest and leave as a friend!

Absolutely excellent approach, willingness, patience and enthusiasm on the part of the instructor. It all starts with a tour of the local aquarium. He will introduce you to fish and show you interesting things. Then you move to the dry training room. He explains and shows everything nicely. First on dry land, then about 30 dives in natural pools. As a golden nail, a 15-minute dive into a large aquarium with sharks, rays, moray eels, starfish, etc. is a truly unique experience.

First scuba diving at Porto Moniz with Abilio.
It was a very nice experience to see the life under water, fishes and seaweeds. Explanations and sympathy of Abilio and his colleague makes us to be confident and makes you want to dive in. Excited to do this again!

Amazing experience, as a nervous first diver I felt absolutely safe at all times. The initial trading is thorough and you go at your pace. Diving in the tank was incredible, to get up close to the sharks and other native fish. At the end you receive a certificate that can be used towards a more advance diving certificate. Make sure you try this when you're visiting Madeira👌

Diving in an aquarium has always been a childhood fantasy and it was just as brilliant as I imagined. My dive instructor was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable which made it even better. I’d highly recommend you take him up on the offer of a video of your dive, you get to see so many amazing species in both the aquarium and the pool so I’m very glad I have a video of everything I saw! Thank you very much for a great experience.

My son is 12 years old and a good swimmer. Is it ok if he dives and I (parent) stay outside the pool?
