- DCspace0 contributionsTouring the Douro with Nuno , History and WineGreat tour of Douro River Valley with Nuno as the perfect driver, tour guide, and fountain of all kinds of information that made an almost 10 hour day a perfect experience. Nuno made sure that our small group of 8 strangers seem like it was a family outing as he made sure all specifics went smoothly so we could enjoy ourselves as much as possible. Starting off a wonderful stop in Amarante our trip took in a tremendous lunch with wine pairings, a boat trip with more wine tastings, and finally a stop at Croft winery to finish up our tasting journey with 3 more pours. And the ride back to Porto was another opportunity for Nuno to shine, and he didn't disappoint. Bravo.Written March 21, 2025

Their knowledge and enthusiasm made our trips very enjoyable. In addition to sightseeing, we learned so much about the history and culture of Portugal. They are sincere, friendly and attentive. Our group absolutely loves them!Written March 19, 2025
- Kerrymh20170 contributionsWell Organized TourLiving Tours has many tours starting from their location in Porto, but it is well organized. Our guide was Pedro and the driver was Joao. I signed up for an English tour, but it turned out to be English and French. I did not find it to be a negative. Pedro answered everyone’s questions in both languages. The tour follows the itinerary as written and times are accurate. The main attraction for me was Bom Jesus Do Monte which is the first stop. Getting there as the first stop means less people which was nice. It lists the funicular separately, but it was not running when we got there. I was looking forward to Guimaraes Castle, but the ruins are really not that much to look at. Pedro provides some of the history and significance of Guimaraes. During the one hour of free time, I went to visit St Francis of Assisi church which I really enjoyed. The drop off is different from the pickup. It is a 12 minute walk from the pickup point. Pedro and Joao were excellent guides. The highlight is Bom Jesus do Monte. Overall, I enjoyed this tour. I did not have much time in Porto, so I would have only visited Bom Jesus do Monte and spend the remaining time in Porto.Written March 19, 2025
- kerik7340 contributionsNice half day tourThis was a fun half day trip to the coast and to the city of Aveiro. The bus ride was about an hour and the guide was very knowledgeable and explained the various sights we were seeing along the way. Aveiro was a quaint town and my only critique of this tour is I would have liked to be able to spend more time there.Written March 18, 2025

An unparalleled experience. The tour we chose was in Spanish, but eventually it was all in English, but we were asked before if we were comfortable with it. Paulo is a very charismatic guide, his work super professional, he is guiding you with tourist data throughout the way. And you've been very kind. Jose the driver too. They are 2 visits to 2 different wineries, but taste almost 6 different wines. The Douro Valley tour is an amazing experience that I recommend to everyone and is more enjoyed with an all-paying tour. At the end of the tour you are taken to a small town that is not included in the tour and I found it a wonderful gift.

The day was perfect in every way! The port wines and lunch at Casa dos Barros winery were fantastic! Lunch exceeded my expectation and there was no shortage of delicious table wines! It is a beautiful and quaint location both inside and outside. After lunch, we continued down to the river on a road with spectacular scenery and views! The boat ride itself was relaxing and enjoyable. It was a great time to nap off the lunch! The second winery was much larger, but the views were also amazing.
What absolutely helped make the day so memorable were our guide Slimmy and driver Pivotto! Slimmy’s knowledge of the history of the area and his warm and easy going personality set the tone for the day! We learned, we laughed, and we sang together! We had the best time! Through it all, and especially on the super tight turns of the cobblestone roads, Pivotto handled the 30 passenger mini-bus like it was a car! His skill was evident and welcomed! This tour is an amazing value, especially if you’re lucky enough to get this driver/guide team! We highly recommend taking on a Sunday when so many other attractions are closed. Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Man I thought we had a celebrity giving us a tour. Ricardo has a million dollar smile and a ten million dollar personality. He had great insight and led us throughout a fantastic day. José has the “magic hands.” I did not envy his task of navigating us through the twists and turns of the Douro Valley and Portuguese mountains, but he did it with the quiet confidence of a chess grandmaster. Checkmate N-222.
This trip is a great value. For just €75 (discounted from €85) we were bussed from Porto to Amarante to walk around, went on a vineyard tour and got to try their wines, went on a boat ride up and down the Douro River, and had lunch and tried more Port Wine at another vineyard. Not to mention we drove on the N-222, one of the most beautiful roads in the world, to get to most of these destinations.
Pros: great value, stunning views, solid venues, awesome guide, and comfortable seats on the bus
Cons: the tours at the 2 vineyards were pretty short (we had so much to do so that was kind of expected, you’re trying to do Douro in 1 day!!), lunch was fine (but with all that was included in the cost I’m not complaining, it did the job)
Bottom line, if you’ve only got 1 day to visit the Douro Valley, you can’t beat the cost or efficiency of the tour.
Tip from our tour guide, in Amarante go to LaiLai’s for coffee. They had fantastic pastries, a beautiful view of the river, and maybe the best coffee I’ve had in Portugal so far.

Tour was mediocre at best. Some nice parts but mostly not good. What's not made clear is that the tour guide is essentially useless. No history, no explanations, no guiding. Our guide spent more time taking with the bus driver and other workers than interacting with anyone who paid for the tour. The itinerary does not follow what was shown on our trip advisor itinerary. In fact it followed the same tour that was $10 cheaper. There was an hour plus delay due to the driving route being blocked by a cycling competition. Lastly, the bus drivers drive like crazy. Not ours specifically but other drivers nearly ran over multiple people while we were waiting for our tour in the beginning. This tour company is the epitome of high volume and low quality.
The positives were the one wine tour (Croft) had a nice tasting and tour of the vineyard. We also bonded with other patrons over how bad the tour was and even eavesdropped on other tours guides giving good history and explanations. So at least there was that.
I would not recommend this company to anyone.

The whole trip was very smooth, Charlie and Sergio were wonderful hosts. You get mutilple stops for photos and 2 port tasting experience, the lunch also comes with wine. It's an early start but there's an opportunity to buy something to eat at the first stop (about 80min in if you don't like eating first thing either). The tour took over 10hours door to doorabd the journey was so scenic. The last stop has stunning views and a beautiful terrace to have your port. I would advise bringing your own water as you only get some at lunch and not offered again. The boat trip is also very peaceful and lasts 1 hour. All in all I highly recommend and value for money for everything you get compared to doing it yourself.

If you're considering a vineyard tour, stop searching—this is the one. From start to finish, every aspect was a delight. The meeting point was simple to locate, and the staff greeted us with such warmth that it set the tone for an unforgettable day. They were incredibly helpful and fun, making us feel like family from the start.
Our journey began with a stop at a quaint, family-owned vineyard for a port tasting. The atmosphere was charmingly rustic, and the wines were simply exquisite. Lunch was equally impressive, with each dish beautifully prepared and bursting with flavor. The true highlight was our sommelier—a 19-year-old who was not only highly knowledgeable but also had an engaging, entertaining presence that brought the experience to life.
Between vineyards, we were treated to a 50-minute boat trip aboard a beautiful, old-fashioned boat. The scenery from the water was breathtaking, offering some of the best views we’d seen all day. A little tip: bring cash if you want to enjoy a drink from the onboard bar—it was a great addition to the experience.
Our next stop, Croft’s vineyard, was a feast for the eyes, with picturesque scenery that could rival any postcard. The travel time was broken up perfectly: an hour’s drive, a scenic stop in the stunning town of Amarante, and another hour to the vineyards. The return trip was a straight two hours, but the team kept it lively with music and fascinating tidbits about the landscapes we passed.
A huge shoutout to our driver, Bruno, who navigated the winding mountain roads with skill, making everyone feel safe and comfortable. And then there was Zé—our host and guide. His humor, extensive knowledge, and excellent English kept us entertained the entire day. He was thoughtful, accommodating, and full of energy, making this journey as fun as it was educational.
For the value, this tour is simply unbeatable. I cannot recommend it enough!

We recently embarked on a one-day Douro Valley wine tour as a family, including our 3-year-old daughter, and it was an unforgettable experience! The tour guide, Andrè Vidal, went above and beyond to make sure every one of us, especially our daughter, felt comfortable and engaged. Long drives can be tough for a little one, but Andrè took the time to ask our daughter’s favorite song (Baby Shark!) and played it, bringing a big smile to her face. His warmth and care really made a difference.
Throughout the 10-hour journey, there was never a dull moment. Andrè shared so much interesting information about the culture, architecture, and history of the Douro region, turning what could have been a long drive into a fascinating experience.
A special shout-out also goes to our driver, Sèrgio Rosa, who navigated the narrow and winding roads with such skill that we always felt safe and comfortable.
This was truly a wonderful family experience, and we feel so lucky to have had such an exceptional team to guide us. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area, especially if you get to travel with Andrè and Sèrgio!

The overall experience of the tour was good, but not really as described our expected. We booked this tour based on an instagram recommendation (ig @hungrypursuit) and our trip differs from what is shown there. First of all, the stops were flipped (which was not an biggie) but since living tours change the exact locations between different trips the quality depends on your journey.
Our first vineyard stop at Quinta de Roeda was good, as expected, with a proper Port tasting and tour in their facilities.
The boat tour was OK but short with similar views as from the bus. Rhe most interesting part with this stop was to see and hear about the historic city of Pinhao.
Our second stop at Enoteca da Quinta da Avessada (which was supposed to include tasting and lunch) we’re however far from good. First of all, this was not a proper wine tasting as advertised by living tours but a welcome glass, a short tour, free drinks together with (cheap table wines) and a grappa. Other tours seems to have got two propoer port wine tasting which we also expected. Apart from that the food quality was far from good, typical school canteen quality at best, and the overall feeling of the place very explouted and touristic.
The major topic of the guide (not living tours) Enoteca da Quinta da Avessada was to point out how ’much’ wine we soon we’re to be drinking at the lunch (the free cheap table wines).
All in all I would not recommend this tour with the sexond stop at Enoteca da Quinta da Avessada even though our guides Sergio and Sergio from living tours were great and very informative!

Me and my buddies (aged 23 respectively) embarked on what became a wonderful journey with our excellent maitre-d André. We spent several hours sipping fine wine and quipping on stories of our youth, all to the gentle backdrop of any fine renaissance painting. André made sure we were well acquainted too and provided an above and beyond service. As a minority age group (most people were aged 40+) we found the trip extremely delightful and would recommend to any age group capable of sibling some lovely vinos. My testaments go out to those working in the Douro valley, and blessed be the cheese makers.

The tour is described as a wine tasting but it is port wine that is sampled not table wine. This was disappointing because there are some nice table wines in the region. The two wineries visited both described the production of port; there was no need to repeat the process at the second winery. The lunch was well below the standard expected for the price of the tour: lukewarm soup that was unidentifiable, pathetic salad, main courses were below average as was the dessert. The table wine was very ordinary and lacking in quantity, only one bottle of red and one bottle of white per table.
The first stop on the tour was at Armende, a town with a church and a handful of shops and cafes. There was no mention of this in the advertised itinerary. The hour spent there would have been better spent at a winery sampling table wines.
The tour guide did not appear to be very knowledgeable and lacked personality. However the bus driver performed well on the winding roads in wet conditions.

You should give your preference when booking. They did vegetarian and vegetarian gluten free - though the options were limited and we did not get all the items we were told were in these options

Hello, my boyfriend is on crutches at the moment. Is there a lot of walking on the tour? Thanks.

A reasonably fit man could do this tour reasonably easily on crutches I would think. Most of the time is spent sitting on the coach or boat. There are of course the tours of the vineyards but you sit at tables for the tastings and for lunch!

My friend is celiac and requires a gluten free meal. Does this tour accommodate gluten free?
Written April 23, 2023
Someone in our party requested gluten free - options on our day were cod or pork with a risotto and the only gluten was the pre-lunch bread basket.

We will be staying in Pinhao. Is there an option to start the tour in Pinhao? Is there any discount if we are departing and returning to Pinhao?
