About
This is a unique opportunity to learn to cook regional Greek dishes with a local in her Athens apartment. Fotini is your warm and passionate host for a hands-on cooking experience focusing on dishes and ingredients that come from the Greek Islands. When she's not cooking, Fotini is an economist, MBA lecturer, writer and independent journalist. She started cooking and experimenting with recipes when she was a university student and discovered a deep appreciation of the various regional cooking styles of the Greek Islands, each featuring special herbs, cheeses or other ingredients that are unique to the locale. Fotini loves to meet people and is passionate about sharing dishes from the Greek Islands with her guests. As Fotini says, meals in Greece are a way to celebrate with guests over great discussion and music! Join Fotini to learn about homecooking the Greek way and taste traditional dishes that you may not find in restaurants.

What to expect
  • Fotini lives with her husband and their beloved dog in an antique and plant-filled apartment in southern Athens. Fotini's husband, originally from the beautiful island of Corfu, is also a skilled cook and together they will welcome you into their home. While you sip a welcome drink, Fotini will tell you about Greek cuisine, considered one of the healthiest diets in the world owing to heavy use of fresh vegetables, Greek olive oil and cheeses, as well as the regional differences that flavor each island's culinary character. Next you'll head to the kitchen to start cooking. Fotini will teach you to prepare authentic home-style dishes that are typical of the islands. You can expect your hands-on cooking lesson to last one to two hours. You will learn a variety of dishes, such as tomato keftedes (tomato balls, a traditional recipe from Santorini), fava (unlike Western "fava beans", "fava" in Greece refers to a delicious yellow split pea puree, a traditional dish from Santorini), froutalia (a traditional omelette from Tinos island), ladenia (Greek pizza, a traditional dish from Kimolos island), revithada (chickpeas cooked in the oven, a traditional dish from Sifnos island) or sofrito (veal casserole with spices, a traditional dish from Corfu island). Once your cooking is complete you will gather at the dining table to taste the fruits of your labor and enjoy a shared meal with your hosts. Please note, this experience is not a professional cooking class, rather it is meant to be a visit into an authentic, local home to meet a local family and share the culture and cuisine together.

Fotini and Christo were gracious hosts and very good at instructing, although my technique will never be as good as theirs. The recipes were easy to follow, the foods were delicious and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I highly recommend it.

One of a couple new experiences while in Athens last month was visiting Greek homes and learning how to cook… 😂, ok, maybe I didn’t do much cooking, but it was fun! Anyways, Fotini and Christo were great hosts. I think I may have stayed more passed my welcome that night, but Fotini is a great conversationalist, who understands good food, drinks, and people create a good atmosphere. I didn’t take any photos while here, because it was just fun. My favorite part was the Mosaiko (chocolate biscuits!!) I would recommend making this a visit if ever in Athens.

Fotini was such a joy to spend the evening with. The recipes were simple and delicious. I enjoyed the hands on experience in learning a few Greek recipes. I highly recommend this to anyone in Athens who's looking for a more personal one on one hands on cooking experience. By the end of the evening my husband and I had her convinced she needs to come to the States to visit us and pretend to our family and friends that she's our own personal Greek cook lol.

This was one of our favorite activities of our whole trip to Greece! My mom is of Greek heritage and cooks lots of Greek food at home, but Fontini took time ahead of our visit to put lots of thought into creating a very unique menu that would show us more rare types of Greek recipes from the islands, as well as educate us about the history of Greek cuisine. She and her partner were so welcoming! They were wonderful hosts in their beautiful apartment, made us completely comfortable, the food was delicious, and they were great teachers. Plus she is such an interesting person, we had wonderful conversation over dinner! Overall it was an experience that will last a lifetime and we would love to return the favor if Fontini ever visits Chicago!

Fotini is an excellent hostess and we were made to feel very welcome in her home. The apartment itself is a little way out of the centre of Athens but is easily reached by public transport.
Fotini and her partner encourage you to get involved in the preparation of a number of regional dishes of Greece and the islands. Nothing too complicated, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. (She will e-mail you details of the recipes you prepared and many others after the event.) She explains the origins of the dishes and where she collected them from.
For me, the highlight was the dinner itself and the conversation around the table. While the main dishes cook you gather around the dinner table for appetisers and the conversation flows freely and easily. Wine and other drinks are served throughout.
I thought this was a great way to spend an evening with fantastic hosts, and it is great value for money - thoroughly recommended.

Fotini provided a great evening of good Greek food, plenty of wine and lively discussion. The cooking tuition was basic, but the excellent company and her information about the origins and history of the dishes compensated for it. The evening turned into a fine dinner party. We went away happy.

On arriving, Fotini served a bit of uozzo and we got to know each other a bit. She described the dishes we would prepare and the origins of each. In all, we prepared five items. Dinner was very good, and once the coffee and dessert came out, the conversation really took off. Fotini is a pleasure to talk to, and I learned a lot about Greece from talking with her. After this lesson, I could certainly prepare all of the plates she introduced me too, and Fotini also sends you an extensive recipe book in PDF that goes well beyond what you cook with her. I am looking forward to trying many of the recipes, and I would say this was one of my favorite things I did in Athens.

Cooking experience was rather basic. We would have more fun with a good Greek cooking book. As it was expensive -certainly for 4 persons- our expectations were higher.

Thank you so much for your review. We are so sorry that you found this experience expensive and not to your expectations. We are glad that you experienced Fotini's hospitality but it sounds like you did not get the cooking experience you were looking for. Our goal as a company is to provide our travelers with authentic experiences, outstanding cuisine and most importantly a meaningful, cultural and culinary experience. We fell short and take responsibility for you not receiving the experience you expected. Please accept my sincere apologies. We were surprised to read your review as Fotini typically receives wonderful reviews and are in contact with our host to understand what might have happened. We wanted to mention that most of our cooks are home cooks without professional training, and the value of the experience is really about the cultural exchange that comes from meeting a local family, and we hope enjoying delicious food and family recipes. That being said, we are working with our host to improve the experience for future travelers. Thank you again for providing your valuable feedback, we truly appreciate the time you took to give us your thoughts so that we might improve. We hope we might have the chance to make up for it and serve you in the future. Warm regards, Aashi

My afternoon and lunch with Fontini was a true highlight of my time in Athens. From the moment I walked into her apartment, I felt right at home. Actually reminded me of my favorite aunt who lives in Florence and is one of the best cooks I know. Fontini is gracious and her smile and personality are captivating. We started with a sip of Ouzo to begin the day:) and from there I learned how to make about amazing traditional Greek dishes from the islands. I won't try to spell the names in Greek, but Fontini followed up the next day with a lovely note and a recipe booklet of all the great things we made. We started with a wonderful parsley/garlic dip like pesto, prepared a delicious tomato based soup with a small wheat pastina and a kick of spice, a delicious beet salad, a potato casserole with mint, garlic, etc and the most delicious yogourt dessert with rose petal honey! I'm not a meat eater so she tailored the dishes to my palate and it was one of the best Greek meals I've ever had. I highly recommend this if you want to learn how to cook in the comfort and warmth of someone's home. I did a lot of the prep work as we went along too! Thank you Fontini for helping me make wonderful memories of my time in Athens!!
