About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Jake F0 contributionsAmazing Guides, Spectacular Scenery!Kylie (guide) and Ferdinand (driver) were amazing! The tour takes you to multiple key spots were the Sound of Music was filmed, in both Salzburg and a few mountain towns that are extremely beautiful. Kylie was super informative and full of fun energy. Absolutely worth the money, and highly recommend.Written October 7, 2024
- Slphaley0 contributionsA Must Do Tour! Shorty and Sweet. As one who typically avoids group tours, I was pleasantly surprised! I grew up watching sound of music so this tour seemed short and sweet if nothing else. I must say we all loved it!!!! It offered a scenic bus ride filled with fun facts about the movie, music was played and people sang along to favorite songs from the movie. The bus ride was very comfortable with large windows to look out of. Well ventilated. We went to a beautiful small town of Mondsee which that alone was worth the entire trip in my opinion. We thought it was money well spent. Our tour guide Anthony and our driver ( Haki?) were very enjoyable. This tour helped me tie the movie scenes to their location.Written October 7, 2024
- jaxsusk0 contributionsWould recommendVery good and the tour guide was excellent. Learned a lot about the movie and its background. A must for fans of the musicalWritten October 6, 2024
- susanf7210 contributionsvery entertaining and informativeDavid entertained us the whole trip, while informing on all types of information on the making of the movie. Made me want to see the movie for the first time. Fernando kept safe on the road.Written October 5, 2024

- N9712NWjenniferw0 contributionsDream Come TrueEven though I’ve been dreaming of this tour for ages, and therefore built it up in my head, Simon and his tour did not disappoint. I learned so much more about the filming and the different locations of the Sound of Music then I thought possible. Simon has the perfect personality and passion for what he’s doing and made this experience that much more fun!Written October 5, 2024
- johnrP5736ID0 contributionsSound of Music! It was a rainy day, but David and Ferdinand made it an awesome experience. The amount of information they were able to tell us was incredible and we will be watching the movie very soon with a fresh perspective!Written October 4, 2024
- Meegs690 contributionsWasn't an SOM fan but I might be now.Our guide, Kylie, was great, high energy enthusiastic and knew a lot about the movie. Our driver, Miki, was great as well, no idea how he was able to get a huge bus through the narrow streets of Salzburg. Scenery was beautiful and the drive was a treat. Overall, the trip exceeded my expectations and I am 100% not a Sound of Music fan.Written October 3, 2024
- 664naureena0 contributions10/10 tour if you love the Sound of Music! This tour was just amazing . Our tour guide I forget his name- but he was originally from Costa Rica was just wonderful. He was funny and was able to engage everyone. My husband who does not remember the Sound of Music enjoyed it as much as I did. We sang along and saw many of the sights where the movie was filmed. We were told about the real Von Trapp story and how it deviates from the musical and how the musical came to be. The trip to Mondsee where the church where Maria and the Captain get married in the movie, is located, was so scenic and we were able to stop along the way and take some pics. If you go to Salzburg definitely book this tour!!!Written October 2, 2024
- Savannahguy9120 contributionsAn interesting a fun experienceThis tour was fantastic. The tour guide was knowledgeable and fun. The tour starting point was easy to find, right where they said they would be. It started on time. The salt mines were so interesting to learn about. And sliding down the slides was so fun that it made this old man feel like a kid again! After the salt mines we went to a small village in Germany. We went to a biergarten there. We had the best German sausage, pretzel and beer while there. The entire tour was just a treat. I highly recommend this tour.Written October 1, 2024
- kimberlylQ5122PU0 contributionsA perfect day!Simon was a wonderful guide! The perfect blend of humor, history, entertainment (singing) and passion for the event/story, and for the community. So much fun!!Written September 30, 2024
- Kzoo500 contributionsGreat experience. The tour was a fabulous experience while visiting Salzburg. The guides were very friendly, caring and knowledgeable about Salzburg and the Sound of Music. The tour is four hours long, but definitely worth the time and price. Our tour group had groups from several different countries, who all enjoyed the tour and sang along to the songs. This is an absolute must do while visiting Salzburg. This is for casual fans and die hards, everyone will love the tour. Although not part of the tour, we rented a car and went to the field where the iconic Do Re Mi song was filmed. Beautiful location about 30-45 minutes outside of Salzburg with absolute stunning views in the mountains. Highly recommend the tour.Written September 30, 2024
- Roving5059440 contributionsSound of Music Bus TourSo entertaining - if you're lucky enough to get Peter as your guide - you will not be bored! I took this tour about 20 years previously and it was exactly as I remembered. But I will remember this tour, this time, because of Peter and poor Ferdinand (driver). There was never a dull moment.Written September 30, 2024
- Roving5059440 contributionsSalt Mines Bus TourA very interesting look into the history and workings of the salt mines outside Salzburg. With a knowledgeable tour guide and fearless driver, there was plenty of beautiful scenery and little surprises a long the way. There was a 1 hour stop off in Berchtesgaden for food or a quick shop.Written September 30, 2024
- Maddogs40 contributionsGreat afternoon.Great afternoon, even if, like me, you are not a huge fan of the show. The people I was with were and they absolutely loved it. I question however that this tour depends on the quality of the guide. Ours was fantastic and made the afternoon great.Written September 29, 2024

Not a coach, as advertised, but nine people crammed into a nine seater minibus! Don’t count on sitting beside your partner! The driver was a great guy and did a valiant job in providing a commentary throughout the journey, but I caught about 30% of what he said. That’s no exaggeration! Much more interesting stuff to see in Saltzburg for a fraction of the price without taking this tedious trek. To be fair, it was raining heavily from start to finish, which was not their fault!

Hi Ian,
thank you for choosing our tour company and for taking time bringing your experience to our attention! We are glad you were satisfied with our guide however we are really sorry that it was not possible for us to meet your expectations and that you left the tour disappointed.
As described on our website etc. Salzburg Panorama Tours is responsible to schedule the tour vehicles. During low season and for smaller groups we operate our tours in minivans where necessary. That’s not only in order to save expenses but also to respect the environment.
All of our minivans are equipped with microphones therefore we are a little surprised you heared only 30% of what our guide said. In such cases we recommend to talk to the driver/guide directly and he/she will be happy to find a quick and pleasant solution.
We would be happy if we could get another chance to welcome you on board of any of our tours someday - then hopefully under sunny skies ☀😎
With best regards,
your Salzburg Panorama Tours team

I participated in this tour on 6 September 2022 with my spouse. I did not like the elderly male tour guide (TG) with white hair medium build. We arrived early to sit upfront but he reserved four seats on the entire front row, not for disabled, but for four people who arrived last after everyone using the excuse they were Spanish speaking. I know for a fact Two of the four spoke English because we were on the row behind them. Regardless, TG barely spoke Spanish to them. Also, At the other tour we joined on 5 September, we were instructed to sit at the same place on the return trip. This one didn’t and it was disorganized. My husband accidentally didn’t get off the lake cruise boat and I was basically left to fend for myself to figure out how to get back to Salzburg, without TG support or help. TG should prepare an instruction sheet to help the stranded. Luckily we met some travelers who went to Lake Hallstatt via bus and returning to Salzburg via bus as well. I suggest in the future TG should warn tour participants that you can’t do both funicular ride to top, visit the charming town, and one hour cruise. btw funicular and lake cruise are out of pocket excluded from tour fee. Time is really tight in this cruise.

Thank you for your time writing us detailed feedback
Regarding the guide:
Our shared tours are held in English and German only, it was a courtesy of our guide to provide some information in Spanish to our Spanish speaking guests.
Therefore, he placed them upfront so a third language would not be disturbing to other passengers onboard.
We are sorry you did not enjoy our well-experienced & multi-lingual tour guide, but please do refrain from any age discrimination.
Please also note in order to provide a smooth running of the Hallstatt tour with almost 70 people on board, we need to keep to our prebooked time slots as well as the tour schedules.
The drive to Hallstatt is about 1.5 hours. and the stay in Hallstatt is about 2.5 hours.
On the way to Hallstatt the guide provides all the important about Hallstatt as well as the timing of the tour and meeting point; stressing the fact that being punctual is a necessity.
The stay as mentioned is 2.5 hours, our guests on board have free time and may choose how they would like to spend their time.
A visit to the skywalk (1h) and a boat ride (1h) leaves not much time to explore the town, and we do recommend addressing the guide beforehand what is possible timewise – as we cannot keep more than 60 passengers waiting – being on time and may have scheduled something else afterwards.
We are sorry you missed the tour departure as you did not manage to get off the cruise in time.
However, please do understand our guide is not able to pick up the phone giving directions when on the tour bus on the way back;
this would not be rather disturbing to the other passengers on board.
Our back-office is more than happy to provide all the information for our guests who missed the tour or prefer to return later the day.
Once again thank you for your timing writing such a detailed review – yet we do hope you get another chance welcoming you on board, maybe on a private tour being more flexible according your interests and timing
Best regards

Even in the rain, this was a beautiful trip--seeing the lakes (some of which you can seen on "The Sound of Music" tour), mountains, and villages. This bus tour is an easy way to get out of the city and see all this beautiful scenery and more. The main let down I had was that so many people were too busy taking selfies, pictures of each other, looking at their devices rather than taking time to look at and enjoy the scenery. I took time to look and enjoy as well as take a few pictures. I highly recommend the tour.

Picture perfect town and scenery. The guide was informative and there was enough free time to wander the town and have a boat ride on the lake. The surrounding mountain alps were awesome as was the scenic lookout well worth the extra euros to catch the funicular up to the walkway.

This tour was good and gave us 2.5 hours of free time in Hallstatt. The road to get there offers nice views; sitting on the left side of the bus offers better views. Hallstatt is extremely touristy but still worth it for the picturesque scenary. Our guide was interesting but gave misleading information on timing. He sells tickets for the funicular to the skywalk directly in the bus at a small discount (and he probably makes a small commission). He said the funicular takes about 30 minutes up and down, and that walking through the village takes 15 minutes. It is actually double those times. On a normal day, the funicular alone took one hour with the wait, which took half of our time there. Hallstatt is still worth it despite being very touristy, but guides should be more honest with the timing of the activities that they sell.

We arrive at meeting point 16.01 not 16:00 and the tour guide refuses to stop and pick us up so we end up taking public transport back despite Others saw us. I was 26 weeks pregnant and this was our baby moon. We phoned the operator straight away and they were rude, not helpful and even blamed us. I cried stressed and baby can feel me. To get to hallstatt please avoid this company and rent a car. Despite not really being late we also didn’t see enough as other reviews mentioned. We hike after spending additional 18 euros pp in skywalk since as town is similar to st gilgen and just had a glimpse of town. If we knew we would reserve more time and travel ourselves instead of joining such an inconsiderate and expensive company (tour guide old and forgetful forgot we owe him one euro for skywalk and did not say anything useful on tour bus just music on coach plus no contact info given to us unlike the lady who took us to st gilgen). To get to hallstatt please rent a car or take 150 bus (75 min) then short train then ferry ride cost us less than 40 euros in total for 2 people, instead over £110 for 2 people because there is not much tour just drive you there and free roam around after arrive. The coach journey is 90 min each way so out of 5.5 hrs tour 3 hrs is driving. If they give us more time to roam then the cost is justified for convenience but you really have to rush after arriving which is stressful for holiday. The public transport journey offers better view too and lot of people go there alone as it turns out. I wouldn’t join this company again if I wasn’t heavily pregnant . My twin even said she went without a tour last year and I wish I listened than deal with the stress of considerate staff.

Thank you for taking your time writing us a review.
Our 5.5-hour tour runs daily from 12:00 hrs, the drive is 1.5 hours one-way.
Going to Hallstatt we pass Lake Wolfgang, Lake Fuschl and other science landscapes.
On our way back we take a different route via breath-taking Gosau, Abtenau etc. …
The stay in Hallstatt is about 2.5 hours.
Please note, Hallstatt is one of the most popular destinations within Austria and therefore has very strict visiting time slot which we must comply with.
We must depart at 16:00 hrs
We are really sorry, but there is no way we can wait for guests running late …
Your first call arrived us 16:12 hrs
Also, by no means we were rude, we just explained on the phone that it is not possible that the bus turns around and picks you up again.
We fully understand your frustration, still there are 70 guests on board being punctual and relying on us being back on time, as they may have other things scheduled as well.
According to our phone tracking list we spend more than 40 minutes & 6 calls helping you to get back to Salzburg as we still feel responsible for our guests.
We gave you all the information regarding the ferry, the train station, the train schedule, the bus schedule how and where to change from ferry to train to public bus.
Also passing on the information that Salzburg offered free public transportation that day so your fees should be less than usual.
The ride on public transportation is about 2.5 hours one-way and during summer usually totally packed.
Once again, we are sorry you missed the bus, but please do refrain from any age discrimination regarding our experienced guides.
Also as mentioned on the phone we are not doing any refund for missed tours or for good reviews.
Again, we regret your trip caused stress yet thank you for taking your time giving us feedback.
We take any comment very seriously for improving our service being therefore awarded with TripAdvisor’s certificate of excellence many years in a row.
With best regards,
your Salzburg Panorama Tours team

I decided to do this tour as I had little time and didn't want to rely on public transport to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg. I'm so glad I did! Johannes was our guide and he was excellent, funny and full of information on both Hallstatt and the surrounding areas we drove through. The 2.5 hours in Hallstatt was plenty of time to see everything: if you are a reasonably fast walker you can walk through the whole town, take pictures, see the Bone House, and do the skywalk too. (I definitely recommend the skywalk if the weather is good - take the funicular up to the viewing platform). But if you prefer to sit down for lunch and enjoy a leisurely wander, that would be great too. Buses get specific timeslots to park in Hallstatt, and you can't drive your car into the town, so this tour was an easy way to see the town. I did the early tour arriving in Hallstatt at 09:30, and it was much quieter than when we left at 12 noon, so I recommend the early tour. I will always remember my visit to Hallstatt!

A lovely trip through the beautiful countryside of Austria. Once we had arrived the walk through the village was magical and the views across the lake were stunning. I would highly recommend the tour provided by Panorama, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and the journey was problem-free.

We took the half-day tour from Panorama Tours office at Mirabellplatz at Salzburg, where we exchanged our vouchers for tickets. The tour started on time. Marx, our guide on the day was fantastic - very knowledgeable with great sense of humour. The drive through the scenic Upper Austria was breath taking. The Hallstatt town was one of the most beautiful towns we have visited. Surrounded by the beautiful Alps and beside lovely lake, the town presented breath taking views throughout. We had a leisurely walk through the streets, enjoying the beautiful scenery and dropping by souvenir shops, bakeries and eateries. Our first stop was the catholic church and the adjoining bone house. It was equally solemn and interesting, one of its kind. Then we slowly made our way up the funiculare to get to the sky walk for more breath taking scenery. We did not have enough time to see the salt mine, for which one would need the full day trip. Overall, it was a great trip, made even more enjoyable by our lovely guide.

This was a perfect day trip...A breathtaking little village to see. We enjoyed a delicious lunch while we took in the sites and enjoyed seeing the beautiful swans there on the lake as well.
We did not take the funicular as it would've taken time away from exploring and enjoying a relaxing lunch.
Max was our tour guide and he was just wonderful.
We also liked the fact that soft drinks, water and sparkling wine were made available to purchase on the bus and along the way.
I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone visiting Salzburg.

I passed the link and all the information to the other travelers, but now that page description changed, and we're afraid of booking... Do the package changed too? I'm in the USA and I would like to email someone about it if possible due to time zone differences. Can you help us?

I'd be going to their website to check or if you are already in Salzburg, their ticket station is near the Mirabelle Gardens or your hotel concierge can look into it for you.
Hope that helps.

On booking it says start time 1200h- is this correct for departure from hotel or just default on the booking? What time do we leave Salzburg?

Hi, you leave the meeting point at 12.00pm it is by their little ticket office by the Church
You have a lovely tour of the lakes on the way, past Red Bull, some of the Sound of Music locations and arrive at Hallsatt a couple of hours later.

Hi!
I am looking to go to Hallstatt in December when we will be staying in Salzburg. Is this tour and all of the stops in operation in December? (Specifically Dec. 27?) I read somewhere that certain parts are closed in winter.
Written November 24, 2019
I agree with the other answers, as I don't know myself. Check online with Panorama and see. Hallstatt is within the Salzgammergut region and the bus rides through the area in its way to the lake. Part of the route includes sights seen on "The Sound of Music" tour. Yes, there is a brief stop overlooking Wolfgangsee, long enough to take a couple of pictures. The stop at Hallstatt is not that long, and it is not advisable to take a ferry ride on the lake during the tour. I don't know if you will be able to get back to the bus in time. The tour does take a full day to complete, so I don't think there are any tours combining the two--Hallstatt and Eagle's Nest. You can check.
Written November 25, 2019
Is it possible to get on the lake during the Hallstatt tour for example maybe the ferry? How long and how much is it? should a person prebook and if so for what time?
Written May 15, 2019
There are no ferries that I know of. I believe you can rent a small boat but that is it. You are going to love it! It’s breathtaking.
