What to expect
After pickup from central Tromso, meet your guide and small group, pull on your supplied thermal coveralls, and settle into the minibus for the journey out of the city. Your exact destination depends upon the evening's conditions and the expert assessment of your aurora-hunter guide, who takes you to areas where you are most likely to see the lights. As you journey into the Arctic countryside and away from the light pollution of the city, your guide explains the science and some of the mythologies surrounding the aurora borealis. Upon arrival at the selected location, your guide serves hot chocolate, coffee, and cake to keep you warm and alert as you await the appearance of the dancing lights. Your guide can also offer tips for handling the tricky conditions of northern lights photography—and can also supply tripods. Keep your camera at the ready and, with luck, the sky soon lights up with colors. Afterward, hopefully with a camera full of photographs and memories to last a lifetime, journey back to central Tromso for drop-off. Before you leave, your guide shares an online link so you can download other photos taken during your tour.

I was working on planning this trip for many years and based on my research i decided to go with the mini bus tour with our Captain of the bus Andreas and Guide Aiyaka from Japan. Like a baby asking parents when will we see the lights i kept asking everyone the same thing. Aiyaka explained about the lights and conditions needed. We stopped at a spot where we couldn't see anything and i was already sad. We drove for a couple of hours before reaching this spot. Anyhow, we drove again for 20 minutes closer to the finish border i think where Aiyaka asked Andreas to park the bus in one corner and as soon as we stepped out the magic began. We could see the dancing lights with shades of pink dancing from one side to another. That was breathtaking. Aiyaka then took our pictures, yeah you dont have to worry about carrying your camera adjusting it. Leave it to our guide, she took amazing pics and all i had to do was to enjoy the view. The hot chocolate and Leffe were amazing and i enjoyed it so much that i booked for the tour again next day with the same crew. The conditions were very cloudy and predictions were very low. It started snowing but Aiyaka and Andreas knew where to go. We went to an island with a frozen lake, a mountain and a moonlit sky. Guess what the lights started and i just lie on the ice with the thermal suit on and kept looking at the sky for almost an hour. After more than 1.5 hours of amazing lights we started to head back and guess what we saw the lights again and this time you could actually see the solid green color. Typically what you see in the pics are stronger colors than what you see in the sky but on some occasions when the conditions are perfect you will see those solid colors. Thank you Aiyaka and Andreas for making this the best trip of my life. I am coming again....soon

The best tour company in Tromsø. Reliable and really knowledgeable! I’ve been on tours with them before (2019) and they were the obvious choice this time around as well. Our guide Lorenzo and driver Andreas did their outmost to give us a great night on our minibus aurora chase. We went to the most beautiful places and they told us about the area as well as keeping an eye out for the aurora so that we could just relax. When the aurora appeared they were very fast at getting the cameras ready so that we could enjoy the show! It was such a great experience and we will remember this evening forever!

One of the only things I wanted to see on my trip to Tromsø was the Northern Lights. Tromsø is a fantastic city, but it was made even better and more memorable with an Aurora Safari Camp where they took us to the best possible location to see the lights, taught us how to take pictures and also taught us the science behind the northern lights. It was such a fun experience to watch the lights above our cabin (and they also had endless hot chocolates, tea and coffees for us!!). I'll be back to Tromsø 100% to fall in love with the city all over again.

Excellent in every way, from the advice given at the desk in the Radisson to the incredible chase and catching of the lights! Fun and anticipation, both in great comfort. Sebastian is from Colombia, but had so much enthusiasm and passion for Norway it was infectious…..the local driver used his military experience and skills to drive nearly 200 miles at super speeds through blizzards and snow storms to find the openings…. where we all enjoyed the spectacle of the Northern lights….the two made a great team for a really memorable night. Congratulations and thanks.

Really enjoyed our northern lights tour with Emma and Rolf! It was nice to sit around the campfire and eat delicious Norwegian snacks while we waited for the prime time for Lady Aurora to show herself, and also to see some beautiful areas outside of the city that we wouldn't have known about otherwise. And Emma and Rolf made New Year's Eve so special -- what fun seeing all the fireworks!! But my favorite thing about this tour was learning HOW to find the lights. Emma explained how to use our cameras as better eyes and where to look in the sky, and thanks to all this great new information, we were able to find them again the following night on our own because we now knew what to look for.

We pre-booked the nordlys safari long in advance to make sure this experience was done with Tromsø Safari. Unfortunately, on January 14th the weather was so inclement with 100% of cloud coverage. Weather forecast had been consistent with bad weather for over a day prior to the trip. And indeed the minibus drove us here and there over the night over icy roads and under the snow. We stopped at a supermarket and quickly in two spots hopelessly. A few tourists just remained in the minibus and slept! We then headed back to town late in the night.
Indeed it would have been fair, - knowing that we had 0% chances to see Aurora due to poor weather - that the minibus trip had been cancelled so as to allow us to enjoy a different experience, maybe with Tromso Safari as well!
Last, but not least, some of the minibus tourists relied on thermal winter suits to borrow, but we were never asked if we needed any. Furthermore, for the 15 participants, only 6 tripods were available.

This worked a bit differently with other tour operators....

We were a party of 6 (children and adults). We decided to go out despite the stormy weather, and what a blissful decision that was!
Our fantastic and knowledgeable guide, Emma, and the local and experienced driver, Carl Evan, had done a great preparation work in finding the best location for us, in spite of the weather.

We have received lots of information of the Northern lights on the way to the chosen location and arrived there in good time before the skies lit up. The view was sunning!
Emma skillfully photographed us while Carl Evan prepared the camp fire.
Between the peaks of the Northern Lights we enjoyed warm drinks (Hot chocolate, Tea & coffee) as well as hot dogs and Marshmallow grilling, while Emma educated us about the phenomenon.
Our Mini bus was comfortable and warm and the guides were very open to accommodate all our questions and wishes. Thank you for a lifetime experience!
Receiving the photos the next day was a delightful surprise!

Best Aurora Tour in Tromsø!

I loved my experience booking with Tromsø Safari from start to finish! The guides were incredibly friendly, knowledgable, and professional. For this tour we booked the Aurora Minibus!

Why I Loved Booking the Minibus

- It’s flexible! You literally “chase” the lights to find the best viewing spot!
- Smaller groups
- Your guides build a warm bonfire to keep you toasty warm with hot drinks and Norwegian snacks

Tromsø Safari is also great for photographers! They have tripods you can borrow for your professional cameras, and are available for helpful tips with your setting.

If you’re not a photographer at all the guides will take fantastic photos of the landscape and of you using their professional cameras! The photos are all included in the tour and you can download them the next day from their website! The guides at Tromsø Safari are great at taking pictures of you with the Auroras! They know all the secrets to capture the perfect photo. You’ll have these photos FOREVER!

If you’re looking for the best aurora company in Tromsø you’ve found it at Tromsø Safari!

Just have pleasant things to address, regarding my aurora chasing activity. Starting on the guide, Gudmund, a very friendly and passionate guide that perfectly knew how to engage with the customer. The perfect example of , when doing what they love , the results are very satisfying. We manage to found Aurora activity, against all the odds, which made this experience remarkable. The fire at the Sami tent was also so relaxing and cosy.

From the moment we joined the Bus our guide was brilliant, a very informative introduction to Northern Lights, great journey to Base Station 2 on the Finnish Border. We were greeted with a camp fire, hot chocolate and Norwegian cake in a large, cosy yurt. Tripods were available and our Team made themselves available all evening with photography hints and tips and instantly alerted us to sitings of the Lights. We were fortunate and the sky cleared to an enormous cheer!!! They were also on hand to photograph all participants which they put on their website for downloading the next day, at no additional cost!!
I highly recommend this trip - a once in a lifetime opportunity!! Thank you Base Station 2 Team for making it an unforgettable experience.
