Overview
Travel from Wellington to Tongariro National Park or Auckland by train for a scenic ride that passes through the Kapiti Coast, the Waikato countryside, and the Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu mountains. With well-appointed carriages and outdoor viewing decks, the train from Wellington to Auckland is a beautiful way to see the North Island, and GPS-triggered audio commentary is available through headsets at every seat.
What to Expect
Make your way to the Wellington Railway Station or the train station in Tongariro National Park, where you’ll board a train heading north. The journey passes through a mix of farmland, rural towns, and coastline, but the three volcanoes of Tongariro National Park are a scenic highlight; rail enthusiasts will be love the Raurimu Spiral that helps the train climb the dramatic slope.

You’ll see lava flows, snow fields, and forests of beech trees while the GPS-triggered audio commentary fills you in on the passing landmarks. The trains are equipped with dining carriages that have drinks, snacks, and light meals available for purchase, and by the time you arrive at Tongariro National Park or the Auckland Railway Station, you’ll have covered some of the North Island’s most remarkable scenery.

Seeing New Zealand's Northern Island the easy way

We had a first-time hop-over from Melbourne to a New Zealand (Auckland) for a Southern Island tour, but wanted to see a bit of the North Island as well and opted for this 9 hour train experience. Extremely enjoyable and relaxing experience from the large-window...More

Nice option

It's definitely not the fastest and cheapest way to get around the Northern Island but nevertheless worth it. The whole journey from Auckland to Wellington takes about 11 hrs, passing by many scenic and beautiful places. There's an audio guide available explaining special places along...More

We travelled on northern explorer from Wellington to Auckland. This trip is a must to do in the north island. The train was spotlessly clean. Seats comfortable. Staff excellent. Canteen much to offer. Far better than the Australian inter state trains. The scenery was just...More

HI Barbara P, Thanks for the great feedback and five-star review. When it comes to seeing the North Island, we have it covered! There is also the option of stopping in Tongariro Nation Park, Otorohanga (Waitomo Caves) and Ohakune en-route. These are all great destinations...More

Fabulous experience

Fantastic way to explore this fabulous land of ours. A definite 'must do' for all NZers and visitors as well. A luxury train ride (about 10 1/2 hours) from Auckland to Wellington- arriving on sunset over the Kapiti Coastline. Commentary is given through out the...More

That'd be really tough- the only option for same day would be a flight out of Auckland (I'm assuming you'd take it all the way to Auckland). The other stops along the way do not offer airports that would have flights going... More
