What to expect
After a detailed safety briefing, we set off on a great day's adventure. Your guide will be with you for the day to answer questions, share pearls of wisdom and ensure your comfort and wellbeing. Depending on the weather, we will vary our route each day to take advantage of sea breezes at our back - we don't follow an enforced plan which enables us to cater for all abilities on the day. On any given day, you have a good chance of seeing sting rays and eagle rays, a huge variety of sea birds including cormorants and sometimes little blue penguins, seals, huge starfish and if we are lucky, even dolphins. And, don't forget lunch - we love our food and you'll be impressed at what goodies we can produce from out of the kayaks! Without a doubt, the best kayaking lunch on offer in the Marlborough Sounds and what's more, it is all sourced and made locally so you are truly supporting the local economy. Our quality kayaks are stable, durable and designed and made in New Zealand for our unique conditions. As part of your trip, we supply you with buoyancy, aids, spray decks, paddle jackets, paddles, dry bags for your gear (including small camera dry bags)

Had a fantastic day kayaking around the Sounds - Sean (Shaun?) was a brilliant guide with extensive knowledge of the local history and wildlife. Best way to explore the area, worth every cent

Amazing must do Activity
Aug. 2020
Kayaking in the Marlborough Sounds was the absolute highlight of our weekend trip to Picton. Martyn was our amazing guide who knew alot about the history of the sounds, plant life and wildlife. He tailored the 1-day guided tour to suit how adventurous we wanted to make it and we couldn't have asked for anything or anyone better. We would recommend this experience to anyone who visits Picton, it definitely opened our eyes to how beautiful the area is and how lucky we are to see it from this perspective.

Great morning on the sound
Mar. 2020 • Couples
Can't recommend these guys enough.
Booking was done online quick & easy.
On the day of our booking the weather was not the best, no dramas we could go, reschedule or a full refund was offered.
We went the next morning and had a wonderful time.
Our guide Jenna was so passionate and knowledgeable about Picton and the Sounds. She explained everything about the wildlife and fauna and took us to some lovely bays. Where we saw a school of stingrays, a seal sunbaking and the infamous tree penguins.
If in Picton this is a must for everyone even for beginners

Great Day
Jan. 2020 • Couples
Had a beautiful day kayaking in the sounds. We came to Picton on a cruise ship. The staff were flexible with our time crunch and made sure we got the most out of our time on the water. Loved kayaking in the beautiful sounds and had a great guide.

Great Day on the Water
Feb. 2020
We did the full day kayak tour. Group was my wife, me, and our guide, Alex. We had a great day. Alex explained a broad variety of things about the area including rays, fish, birds, history, and legends. It was a bit windy so he found sheltered spots to paddle and talk. Not overly taxing. We had a good time and were glad we took the tour.

An amazing start to 2020 - New Year's Day kayaking
Jan. 2020
Via an online booking in July 2019 we arranged a day of kayaking for New Years Day 2020 for four adults and were absolutely delighted with our experience. We had the exclusive services of Jake for the day who - as others have said - is extremely knowledgeable about the geography and fauna of the area, we could not have asked for a better guide for our day.

I'm assuming that weather conditions and group experience dictate the plan for the day, but in our case we were driven out along Queen Charlotte Drive to Ngakuta Bay where we launched after a recap of equipment and safety. Spray decks, dry bags and spray tops (if required) were provided.

We spent the morning exploring bays off the Grove Arm - essentially exploring the coastline that the Queen Charlotte Track goes through - which is unspoiled by vehicular access. Lunch (and toilet stop) was taken ashore at the Mistletoe Eco Camp Site, the far end of the QCT. A great lunch of sandwiches, cakes and real fresh coffee made over a stove was provided. The return journey took in more of the coastline before a crossing of the open waters of the Grove. The wind had picked up a bit but the tandem kayaks have a broad beam and are extremely stable so had no difficulty in navigating the waves. It was clear that our guide had a contingency plan if we'd been uncomfortable with the conditions or ran out of steam and that support from base was on hand if required.

We had a great and memorable adventure and I wouldn't hesitate to use the services of Wilderness Guides again, this is a very well run operation. Book with confidence and create your own adventure! Thanks again Jake

Enjoyable day kayaking!
Dec. 2019 • Friends
I went on the full day kayak trip and had a wonderful time! The weather was amazing and we could see a good amount of coastline in the time that we had. I really enjoyed the drive out to the starting point, seeing the rays and birds, and hearing about the Maori culture and history of the area! The tour was tailored to the pace of the group and seemed very well organised, with a delicious lunch and some time for a swim! Would recommend to anyone keen to see the area!

Wonderful Experience!
The full day sea kayak guided tour is safe, well provisioned and enjoyable. We had kayaks and paddles which were in excellent condition. Waterproof sea bags kept our stuff dry. The spray skirts and life jackets were clean and comfortable. Alex, our guide was patient and competent. His local knowledge enabled us to spy numerous short and long tailed stingrays in sheltered coves. We also chanced upon seals sunbathing on a rocky outcrop. The highlight, however, was encountering a pod of playful dolphins who swam amongst our kayaks and breached the water numerous times in a display of grace and power. It was quite an experience indeed! Lunch on a quiet beach with toilet facilities comprised fresh fruit, delicious sandwiches, chocolate chip slices and coffee. What a wonderful day on the water! A great introduction to Queen Charlotte Sound!

Must do when you're in Picton
As there were no one else except for my husband and I, we were fortunate to have the pleasure of a private tour by our very knowledgeable and friendly guide, Jake.

Jake is well-travelled and has a vast knowledge of NZ history and the surrounding region. He could almost give you a background story of anything that we spot along our kayak trip - from the trees to the birds and the seal that we spotted having a sun bath and a back rub up on someone's holiday home deck.

The water was still and crystal clear that we've even managed to spot a few baby jellyfishes (tiny non-poisonous ones) along the way.

As we opted for a full day tour, lunch was included as part of the package. We had a delicious chicken sandwich from the local bakery, Whittakers choc, orange juice and were given the choice of tea or coffee. We had a nice lovely picnic on one of the nearby beaches.

Overall a lovely way to check out the beauty of the region especially if it's your first time.
