    What to Expect
Visit: Oconaluftee Indian Village, 218 Drama Road, Cherokee, NC 28719

The Oconaluftee Indian Village is open April 30 - October 23, daily except Sundays from 9:30 am until 4:00 pm.

    • Guided Tours: Our guided tours begin every 15 minutes. Your tour guide will greet you and will take you on a tour of our Craft Line. The craft line has many stations such as fingerweaving, baskets, pottery, weaponry and more in which you will be able to observe Cherokee artists creating beautiful works of art. Your tour guide will explain how the crafts are made and the purpose of each craft. Run time is approx. 30 minutes.
    • The “Living History” Section: After the guided portion, the village pathway leads directly into what we call the “Living History” Section. Here, you will see replicas of Cherokee homes and community structures. You may go in and explore the replicas—you’ll also find re-enactors dressed in traditional clothing of the time period, feel free to ask them questions! Travel at your own pace.
    • Lectures: Our Living History section also features 2 half-hour lectures that are held in both the Council House replica and the Square Grounds areas. These fascinating lectures teach in depth lessons about Cherokee culture and history and will entertain audiences of all ages. Lectures alternate every half hour.
    • Dance Shows & Time of War Shows: Depending on the day of your visit, you will be able to attend either a traditional dance show or a Time of War re-enactment scene in our squaregrounds. These shows happen twice daily at noon and 3pm— they are truly a highlight of the entire Village experience. (Time of War shows run through Mid-June through Mid-August Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays)

Guides, demonstrators and craftsmen gave tour participants an excellent appreciation for the structure of a Cherokee Village. They showed us how they made and used pottery, bead work, baskets, bows, arrows, blow guns and tanned leather. Dances were performed on sacred grounds and the clan...More

Well organized and informative. Each area has a demonstration and things that you can touch. It is a guided tour and can interact with the people doing the demonstration. Plenty of people around to answer questions.

We visited on a Saturday morning and was surprised to see it so uncrowded. After a very short wait we took a guided tour which was very interesting and we learned so much about the Cherokee Indian life that we didn't know. We were in...More

We really enjoyed the tour watching how the Cherokee carved, wove rugs and baskets, tanned, built homes and even danced. Very informative. My only criticism was the gift shop. We were hoping to buy some authentic souvenirs but 1/2 the goods for sale were “made...More

The guided tour is great and very informative. The tour guide did a great job answering all the questions. There was a short "battle drama" at noon that is very good to see. Thanks to all participants and actors from "Unto These Hills".

Note that the shows are at 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. If you arrive early, you could do the tours and see the garden and be ready to leave after the 12:00 show. The War Shows are on Tues., Thurs., Sat., and the dances are Mon... More

Under "What to Expect" above they say that they are open weekdays from April 30 to October 23. I guess they are not open in December. Sorry!

They say that concessions are available, which probably does not include a formal, sit-down meal--only snacks and pre-prepared sandwiches and drinks. Then, again, there are tables where people can eat concession foods. There... More
