What to expect
Make your way to a centrally located point in Georgetown, where you’ll meet up with a guide and small group for your 10am walking tour. Set a leisurely pace through the city—plan to do about 2 miles (3.2 km.) of walking during the 2-hour tour. Follow your guide to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, which connected Potomac River communities with markets and goods, and learn about a series of historic destinations as you walk: see the Laird-Dunlop House, the Newton D. Baker House, and the Lydia English Seminary School for Girls, a boarding school that served the upper class. Hear the story of the Grafton Tyler Double House, pass the Christ Episcopal Church, and see the Hyde-Addison School. Take a look at the historic Yellow Tavern, also called the White Horse Tavern, then follow Pomander Walk past tiny, pastel-hued row houses. See where Alexander Graham Bell founded Volta Laboratory, and take in a series of academic destinations: Georgetown Preparatory School, Healy Hall, and the University Library. Get a look at campus nightlife at The Tombs, then visit the Car Barn, a renovated streetcar depot. Continue to the Francis Scott Key Memorial, Cady’s Alley, and the Georgetown Waterfront, where this tour concludes.

Really interesting and entertaining experience
Jul. 2021
We did back to back tours, first this Georgetown tour with the founder/owner Carolyn, then the Capitol Hill tour with Sam. Both were truly outstanding and we look forward to more tours with this company the next time we visit DC.

The Georgetown tour was an interesting mix of building info and general history. We'd visited Georgetown U. before, but we never noticed the building right around the corner where Alexander Graham Bell had combined three styles of columns into a single building. (What was he thinking??)

Great way to see and learn about Georgetown and it’s hidden gems!
This was our third tour in DC and by far the best one we have had. What a great experience seeing and learning so much about Georgetown and its hidden history and gems. My wife and two teenage daughters thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and wish we had time to work in another one of their tours while we are in town. If you are debating taking this tour, book it! You won’t regret it!

This is a fantastic tour! She merges history, architecture and current intrigue into a lovely story about the neighborhood. The length of the tour is ideal - you cover a good amount of the neighborhood but still have time to rest and absorb. We are planning to look into their other tours!

We booked a private tour as part of a birthday celebration, and everyone loved it. Our guide Sam was fantastic--knowledgeable and entertaining. We learned a lot of fascinating information and had a lot of fun. Highly recommend taking this tour or one of the others offered by DC Design Tours (I've also done the one of Adams Morgan), whether you're a tourist or a local.

As Always.... a wonderful tour!

Carolyn knows a lot about Georgetown architecture and shares it enthusiastically! She is full of details about the people who lived in these homes which made the tour enlightening a well as fun. We are a group of long term Washington DC area residents and learned so much on this tour. Can't wait for the next one.

I booked a virtual tour of historic Georgetown, what an amazing journey with Carolyn from DC Design Tours!!! One of the most satisfying outcomes of tours that I take is the amount of knowledge the host/guide has to share. Carolyn does not disappoint!! The tour was fantastic and she was full of information about history, architecture and interesting facts and stories.

I highly recommend taking these tours for yourself and also using this as an opportunity to gift others with a unique and fascinating experience.

Hidden gems and history in Georgetown
Nov. 2020 • Couples
Great tour! This was our second DC Design Tour, the previous one was a few years ago on Embassy Row.

To be honest, I almost chose to tour another neighborhood because I didn’t know what could be left to see. Well, turns out there was a lot! I worked in Georgetown and have walked around the neighborhood for more than 5 years, yet somehow had not really looked at or noticed the specific buildings she pointed out. Even among the ones I had stopped to check out before, I had not known the stories they had to tell. And what stories! I won’t spoil the surprises.

One of my favorite moments was entering a “secret” alley that was the inspiration for a book I had read as a kid, “The People of Pineapple Place” (now out of print). The context of alley dwellings had been a bit lost on me as a child, so it was awesome to learn the story behind this place and to see that is still exists today. (There are many more alley dwellings throughout DC, especially Capitol Hill.)

This was such a great way to learn more about the history of the area and some of its notable residents, while enjoying the architecture. The pace and distance of the walk was easy and though it was a sunny November day when we went, it seemed shaded enough to be cool-ish during the heat of summer.

Overall, highly recommend this tour!

Best way to learn about Georgetown!
I have been visiting Georgetown frequently lately from overseas. I loved walking on M street and dining in the cafes. But I knew there was more to the neighborhood than meets the eye, so I booked this walking tour, and it sure did not disappoint! Sam was amazing! He gave us historical background and context, hilarious stories about some colorful individuals and events, in addition to just the right amount of architectural education to keep us fascinated. I was sad when the tour ended. I look forward to other tours by this company.

Loved this tour
Sep. 2019
brought us right around the Georgetown area including the canal, Georgetown University campus and the infamous steps featured in the Exorcist. Walking around this beautiful area by yourself is simply not the same as taking a guided tour as there is so much historical and architectural detail that is revealed as you are guided around the area. Can be tiring if the weather is hot.

An engaging history lesson tied to a fascinating architectural walking tour!

A big thanks to Sam as he lead us on a terrific tour of Georgetown even through the rain! I was a bit skeptical of what a tour would be like but I loved how he wove storytelling in with the design features we were seeing all around us. With high energy and enthusiasm he easily kept my attention. The tour was two hours but I could have taken more! I'm not great with history but Sam made it easy to understand and exciting to hear. Definitely check out DC Design Tours if you're excited about the intersection of history and design in the DC area.
