Lamanai and the New River Safari in Belize

Overview

Channel your inner archaeologist on a tour from Belize City to the Lamanai ruins, among the top Maya sites in Belize. The only way to reach the excavated city is by water, so you cruise down the New River and hike through the jungle to reach the legendary Jaguar Temple. No need to pack a lunch, as a picnic on the shores of a jungle lagoon is included.

What to Expect

The adventure begins with pickup at your Belize City hotel and a 45-minute drive to reach the New River, where you board a river cruise.

Glide through a lush landscape of creeks and lagoons and through a tropical forest rich with birdlife and orchids. Watch the stone pyramids of Lamanai emerge from the jungle as you near. Visit the on-site museum to learn the history of the site and see ancient Maya artifacts.

Reach the main cluster of ruins by a 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) hike through the jungle. Highlights include the Jaguar Temple, the imposing Temple of the Masks—one of the tallest in Belize—and the carved mask of the Maya sun god Kinich Ahau. Learn the ceremonial functions of the pyramids and explore the ruins with a guide. You refuel midday with a provided picnic lunch on the side of a tropical lagoon.

Make your way back to Belize City the way you came.

Great trip but bring bug spray!

My husband and I went on our first cruise, and this was our favorite excursion. There are so many to choose from thanks to the ship's offers, so choose wisely! However, we learned that Belize has the second largest Barrier Reef. I would have loved...More

The bust ride is about an hour and a half, and then I believe we spent 3-4 hours between our 20 min boat ride to and from the ruins, our time at the ruins, and our luncheon afterwards. It's true that if you need to be back... More
