- LandTKelly0 contributionsVulcanixityAmazing place. The volcanoes are huge. Unfortunately due to activity which we were unable to see part of the park was closedWritten September 22, 2024
- carolevP2167PR0 contributionsDo itMust do 100% best Hawaii experience walking over the crater was amazing and seeing the steam vents we loved every stop we left in the dark at 8 pm cause so so much to see and we still didn’t get to see it all , only thing I want praise was the expensive volcano house foodWritten August 15, 2024
- Passenger393825750960 contributionsAbsolutely worth itBy far the most useful tool for exploring the big island on your own (without a tour group). There were so many sights to see and suggested spots that we never would have known about, and it seems to be timed well so that you end up in Hilo by early evening. The narration that explained what you were looking at was great, and we loved the mood music. Tip: Leave early. We started out from Kona at 9:30. We were done with Hilo by 6, and decided to have dinner there. But that meant driving back to Kona on dark, twisty mountain roads at night. Nerve wracking. If I were to do it again I’d listen to the apps recommendation and start by 8-8:30, finish with Hilo at 5. Pack a picnic dinner or get some kind of take out in Hilo, then continue on to Mauna Kea (which we had to skip.)Written July 15, 2024

- CynthinVictoria0 contributionsExpected more…I thought it would tell me more than be just a map. Kind of disappointing. Plus we had a hard time with the not audio working. I worked for the first location then nothing. :( had to waste time deleting and reloading the app to get it to work again. It was very frustrating. Even then it wasn’t very useful.Written July 6, 2023

- margaretlS5519LQ0 contributionsBig Island, HI - Let them show you the way!Great Way to see Big Island, HI - however, no tour info for southern island (e.g., Volcanoes NP). Loved the narrations for the northern end of island. Very good deal for the $$!Written May 19, 2023
- Nielc770 contributionsExcellentThe guided tour was excellent and best part was turn by turn comments and stories and spots to stop and hike and also spots that are not so good. Excellent value for money and would recommend fellow travelers to buy this rather than paying expensive tour companies. Will buy similar tours again for other excursions. Highly RecommendedWritten April 17, 2023
- I4814TXdebras0 contributionsMixed AudioWe definitely went to some incredibly beautiful places on the north shore that we wouldn’t have found on our own, so the tour was definitely worth the $20. I found navigating the audio somewhat difficult, even after I got the hang of it. He often repeated himself. There were so many stops on the tour that we couldn’t possibly do them all! A great idea but needs some work!Written April 3, 2023
- mythstery0 contributionsLocal knowledge on the flyThis audio guide made our road trip around the Big Island with an SUV full of family more fun and memorable. We appreciated the detailed local knowledge including history (with social commentary), how climate variations with altitude affect coffee cultivation, and where to stop for lunch. Stopping at Big Island Bees was great, something we never would have done without the tour. These days, it's hard to keep teens and 20-somethings off their phones and engaged with the family on vacation. You have to "gamify" everything to get them looking out the window. This GPS-linked audio tour is a fine way to turn driving around into family entertainment.Written February 1, 2023
- Tom T0 contributionsInexpensive tourWe arrived to the park in the morning and did some exploring. We started the narrative part way through which caused some problems. It’s best to start the tour at the beginning. TheGPS for the program starts at noon and we did not have enough time or energy to finish it. Thankfully when we came back 6 days later we were able to continue where we left off. The tour hit the right spots to see and the stories were good. My suggestion would be to explain more about some of the trails to hike along the way. Also I would have enjoyed more information and much less music which came in loud. I had the narrative go directly to my hearing aids and my wife to her phone speaker. (She also bought the tour). At the end of the tour, at the ocean, we were told to keep it on for stories on the way back to the visitor center. This did no work. Overall, I learned many things about the area and we didn’t miss much.Written January 27, 2023

App is awesome when the timing is correct. We bought the bundle of 5 and seemed to have started a 10-12 hour tour when our intent was the 4-6 hour. Development should create it as a choose your own adventure style and put in your hours available and starting point then direction, and provide the stop options so it can be selected in advance. We have the bundle of 5 and they overlap so we didn’t have the most productive use of 12+ hours and missed many stops. These updates Would take it to the next level. Definitely worth the money but the bundle is confusing.

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear there seems to be some confusion. Our Shaka Guide tours are self driving tours and users have full freedom in deciding how they want to do the tour. Tours can be done in full or in parts and users can choose which stops they want to see and which ones to skip if they're short on time.
Wish you would have contacted us at that time if there was anything unclear about our tours so we could guided you in making the tour best match your plans.
Hope this helps. Should you have other questions or concerns, email us at aloha@shakaguide.com

We played these tours while driving around the Big Island and it was worth every penny. We found beautiful places to stop, discovered Ka'u coffee, grabbed snacks at the Punalu'u Bakery, and learned a lot about the history of Hawaii. It made what would have been a boring drive from Kona to Volcanoes National Park more entertaining. We liked the Big Island tours so much, we purchased the tours for O'ahu as soon as we landed. Because of the O'ahu tours, we found great places to stop to take pictures and even went back to one of the North Shore beaches to go snorkeling.

I was reluctant to purchase this at first but at 29.99 for five tours on the Big Island, probably one of the best bargains you'll find in Hawaii. This guide is really easy to use and Shaka was incredibly informative. Love how it integrates with GPS on your phone so it knows exactly when to start playing. The guide keeps the drive interesting by providing history, details, step by step directions and recommended places to stop. By the second tour, the kids were also into it and demanded we play the guide while driving each time. It is well prepared and incredibly helpful. As they will tell you, its very important to download the tours in advance, since cell signal can be spotty on MANY parts of the island. Once downloaded and you keep the phone plugged in, it works quite well. The musical interludes were awesome too!
My only comment would be to add some more restaurant options and info on possible street side stops, just to add more info for the tours.

We absolutely loved this way to learn more about the island. I highly recommend this over a tour in a bus full of people. You can customize it to see what you want to see at the pace you want to see it. it was very informative, great directions, interesting stories, optional Hawaiian music in between info, and good restaurant suggestions along the way. And for the price, you can't get any better way to see and learn about the island. Will definitely use them again in other parts of the country.

In early 2020 I had a business trip to the Big Island and decided to make if a couple vacation. Back in 1987 recorded car tours were via cassette recording with the tour recording referring to mile posts and land marks like a gas station or McDonalds. I was delighted to see that the technology was so advance. The off line GPS works flawlessly. I have the Shaka App on both my phone and ipad and plug in my ipad and use the ipad for the tour. Paying, downloading and using is intuitive and easy. Plus they have support area with FAQs. I recently asked a basic question and they got back to me quickly.
So back in 2020, we took the Kohala Coast tour twice. Loved the information, tour and tips. We did North Jungle and Kona also. We bought the entire island of tours so we had max flexibility. In 2022, We visited Oahu on another Business/Leisure trip and again purchased the whole island tour. We took the Grand Island (Counter Clockwise) and North Shore (Clockwise) tours, as well as East Oahu. Great. We happened to purchase a day of tours at Kulaloa Ranch and the Shaka tours fit right in for the trip to the ranch and back.
Now that we have used the tours twice, Shaka Guide is without a doubt a must have when visiting Hawaii. They just added Utah so I couldn't resist purchasing the whole of Utah tours package and sampled a little of Zion already.
I hope this information helps. Big thumbs up to Shaka Guide!

What a waste of time and energy. Spent half a day trying to get it to work. The system was stuck in a loop between audio check and resume tour. The App, in one spot, was trying to give us directions to the coast of Africa. The narrator fades out after one minute. No information of value. Called customer service the following day (they are not open weekends) and he was unable to resolve the issue.

I was hesitant about buying this bundle deal of 5 for the big island or winging it and I’m so glad we purchased it. The navigation was on point, stories were entertaining and he even told a few jokes. The only thing I would like to see improved is to play more music while we are driving instead of hearing nothing because we thought it had shut off and would love a beach hopping tour of the best beaches in the area.

We enjoyed the audio driving tours. They were a good value and it was easy to pick and choose what we wanted to see. Because of the audio tour, we visited a part of the Volcano Park we would have missed, and it was one of our favorite parts. We also learned some interesting historical events and legends.
The audio did crash while we were in Hilo on the way to some waterfalls, likely due to spotty coverage there. Fortunately we could get Google to direct us to the falls. We would purchase more audio tours from this vendor.

It was not easy to download and get started. I missed one full day's worth of travel due to problems, so we only used one of 5 possible tours. While the tour for Kohala was a set, clockwise itinerary, we chose to do the drive in reverse order, based on a travel book's recommendation. It was a bit chaotic, but we played each interest point separately, and it worked. Overall we liked the premise of a GPS based presentation. On the whole it was good dialogue and interesting. On my next Big Island trip I'll download and activate the app right away, to be sure there are no problems.

I couldn't really get it to work. I pretty much had to scroll through the different stops and read about them. I was using my iPad for the tour. I connected my iPad to my iPhone's wireless, so maybe that was the problem. Over all it looks pretty good. When I was at home I had previewed the tours and they do sound good. I had a little trouble downloading and making it work, but once I got past that, it looked like it was going to be great. Once we were in Hawaii, if I started a tour, it would just play music and never talk about the stops that we were passing, I finally figured out I could press on each stop and press play and then it would tell me about the stop. I would have liked to just listen to the preview mode, but once you are on the tour, the preview will no longer work. I'd still recommend it. Just use it on your iPhone with cellular service and you should be fine.
