Overview
Experience Kauai’s sacred Wailua River by land and by water on this combo hiking and kayaking tour that’s easy enough even for beginners. A state-certified guide safely leads you through the trip’s two legs: a kayak trip down the river and a hike through tropical forest to a waterfall. Guide commentary about Wailua’s ancient history and legends along the way adds to the adventure.
What to Expect
Considered one of the most sacred places on the island of Kauai, the Wailua River winds 20 miles (32 kilometers) through a lush landscape and past the sites of seven ancient temples. Make your way to the river launch point in Kapa’a and climb into a double, sit-on-top kayak. If you've never kayaked before, your certified guide will provide instruction.

Learn about the Wailua's history and tropical ecosystem from your guide as you paddle for about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. Disembark for a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) hike through the tropical forest, observing native plant and animal species.

Stop at a gorgeous waterfall splashing into a natural pool from 200 feet (60 meters) above. Cool off with a swim here if you like, and recharge with a picnic lunch.

Wailua River Kayak & Hike - A fun day!!

Highly recommend, what a fun time! Great time kayaking and hiking to Secret Falls. Delicious lunch included at the waterfall. The hike is definitely muddy when there's been rainfall but just be prepared with the right expectation and shoes and you're all good. We had...More

Aloha Caitlin, Thanks for taking time during the busy Holidays to respond. Appreciated. Passion Bakery is our caterer and feel they do a great job keeping client "gassed" up the paddle and hike to the Falls. ...and yes..thanks for reminding folks about the mud. Happy...More

Wailua kayak and hike

There was a lot of mud but we expected and were prepared. The kayak and hike were a great adventure and the falls made it all worth it. Our guide Dustin was fun and informative.

it was nice

"the journey is far more interesting than the destination itself". This saying is quite true in this case. The trip started with the kayaking which was quite an experience in itself. Total upper body workout. Then started the hiking part, which by no means was...More

Aloha Devina, As you suggested...half the fun is getting there. The Wailua River Sacred/Secret Falls tour is a nice combination of upper body (paddling) and hiking (lower body) and as you mentioned with the rain the hike can be more challenging. Most folks like our...More

Our favorite Hawaii excursion adventure by far!

Our guide Lucas was so chill and fun. He manned the back of the Kayak while my 15-year-old paddled in front. He was informative but not pushy. Took great care of us and kept our pace to a manageable speed. The muddy, slippery trek up...More

Fun times!!!

Great kayak ride up the Wailua river and fantastic, muddy hike to the 120ft secret falls. Just incredible. So lush and beautiful - it's really a must do!! Our tour guide was Phil (Mahalo, Phil, for a great adventure!). Make sure you wear shoes you...More

Aloha Matty, Thanks for the dirt. The word is getting out..."no mud...no fun". Rain does make the fall almost magnificent if not unbelievable. No mud no gain! Thanks for letting us know that Phil continues to do a great job. Keep paddling and hiking in...More

You can go on your own, but I highly recommend Kayak Wailua. We took the guided kayak & hike to Secret Falls with Brandon and it was hands down the highlight of our 8 day stay on Kauai. More than worth the price.

A very easy hike I felt. It had rained before we went so there were places that were muddy and a bit slippery, but nothing to treacherous by any means. We met all types of people on the trail, so very doable by just about... More
