Learn about the island’s diverse ecosystems and spot tortoises and other endangered species on this eco adventure.
What to Expect
Get picked up at you Poipu-area hotel in a comfortable Ford van and meet your guide, a professionally trained archaeologist. Learn background info on the south shore’s natural history with a visual presentation before traveling through former sugar cane fields to the Makauwahi Cave Reserve. Enter the cave itself, the largest limestone cave in Hawaii and a treasure trove of fossils and other geologic clues to the island’s past.

Back in the light of day, take a guided nature hike through reserve, where carefully restored habitats shelter a wide variety of plant and animal species. Take in fantastic views from a lookout point, visit a wild tortoise colony, and look for other endangered animals in the swaying taro fields before the half-day expedition finishes with drop-off back at your hotel.
