This excursion was amazing!!!! Our guide made the trip! The hike was a bit challenging at times, but our guide George was there every step of the way to make us feel safe. We brought our two kids, 9 and 6 with us. George made them walking sticks, patiently answered all of their questions, kept them entertained with tons of info about the local ecosystem. He had them feel different types of leaves and trees and smell flowers. He engaged all of our senses to make the hike a pleasure. Then he swam my kids back and forth across lakes all day long. My husband and I aren’t great swimmers, so he took over keeping our kids safe in the water. He earned my kids trust to the point where they only wanted George to help them across land and water. It was the highlight of our trip to Hawaii!! Trust me, I don’t ever write reviews. But George and Hike Maui was amazing!! (The last two photos are of my daughter and George. )

We were looking for something different than the usual touristy attractions. This tour fit the bill. It is a lovely walk through the rainforest with tons of information shared about the flora and fauna as well as the history of the land by a fantastic guide.
For those saying it's not a hike, this is true, but do expect to traverse some uneven terrain. It was lightly raining on the day we went so some of the paths were a bit slippery.
Some of the earlier reviews mention swimming in the waterfalls. I think they have changed up their tour because we didn't get anywhere near the water. We did stop at one vantage point and take pictures of one, but don't go expecting to be up close to waterfalls.
The chocolate sampling is a nice way to conclude after the walking tour, but I think the real value of the tour is learning about the rainforest and the chocolate is just a bonus.
The scenery is absolutely stunning, and the experience is unique. My husband and I and our two teen boys all enjoyed it. We'd recommend it if you want an "off the beaten path" Maui experience.

Kana, the tour guide was our favorite part of the experience. He was very engaging with everyone on the hike and was certainly the Indiana Jones of the rainforest in Hawaii. You will learn about Hawaii’s history, the various types of vegetation and how they build dependencies on each other - all of which made my wife’s milestone birthday very special. I think James Cameron drew his inspiration for AVATAR from this part of the rainforest! The chocolate-making activity was also fun. The “hike” isn’t really a “hike”; it’s a relatively easy walk. Be prepared to walk up/down and bring a bottle of water.

Positives: The tour was lovely. I wouldn't call it much of a hike, but more of a stroll. I was there with my 76 year old parents and although we needed to hold my mom's hand going down a few of the hills, it was pretty easy walking for all. Beautiful plants, fun having some chocolate at the end. We had Kana as our tour guide. He has a dry humor that was super fun. Also, it was raining and he provided rain ponchos which made everything work out.

Negatives:We did not get to go in the waterfall or even near it since they were worried about flash flooding. That makes sense, but I think calling it a waterfall hike is a bit misleading since you can't always get to the waterfall. I'd call it more of a nature/plant hike. Also, it was quite pricey for what it was. I know they are trying to save the area, so I'll give that a pass. The most frustrating thing was how many times we were asked to give a tip of $25 per person. We already paid a lot for this and although Kana deserved a tip, I'm not sure I've ever given $25 per person on any tour I've been on that only lasted 2 hours. Pushing as hard as they did for a large tip left a bad taste at the end, which is unfortunate because it was a fun tour.

Aloha, Mahalo for Your Review, Kindly Note as you know it is a fundraiser for charity, hence 98% people visit because they want to do good and give to a good cause while on vacation and have fun hence they are happy to a generous contribution. Also due to global warming there are a lot more lives being lost to flash floods at all waterfall areas so most people are happy to be safe and keep there loved ones safe as well. As our guides do a lot of volunteer work therefore we humbly and kindly only suggest a certain amount for a gratuity and mention if people are feeling inspired then yes go a head and give them a generous gratuity, all in order to show them that they are appreciated but again we do kindly say if visitors are inspired to do so. As you can see a majority of our visitors absolutely love their visit! They are the ones that have a compelling fascination with our Hawaiian historical Heritage & sacred ancient conservation sites, therefore they know that this not just another tourist attraction, but a location steeped in the magic of what our ancient Hawaiian civilization calls Mana ( divine magical vibration) And they are excited as they know that this is also a charity fundraise, not another tourist attraction. Also we feel you must be a competitor as no real visitor that has been here has written such an inaccurate description of our location. But nevertheless for those reading this response. We understand that we are not for everyone, as those who want the touristy kind of an experience or want to just see a waterfall, then yes the road to Hana is great for them. But for those who want to help a good cause and enjoy coming to a private conservation estate and gardens a location that is a ancient Hawaiian Heritage site, deemed of great significants to our Hawaiian culture, that is not open to the general public, they can experience the immense Mana here at the gardens. As you can see from the majority of our reviews being great five star rave reviews, they the majority who visit understand from reading our web site and our posting here on Viator & Trip Advisor that its not a typical tourist destination, so for them they completely and utterly enjoy their visit and love to give us five star rave reviews. For them the magical of this sacred Hawaiian Estate with Micro rainforest gifts them with the essence of the Ancient Hawaiian Mana where they get to walk in the foot steps of the last great Kings Of Hawaii and drink in the deeper profound essence of this location. For them its not just a stone they are seeing but a ancient sacred Mana Pohaku ( sacred ancient stone of divine power) and it not just a bunch of plants but many are rare and endanger species, and it not just a waterfall but the ancient falls where the King himself spent time, and it's not just a water cave but the ancient home to the mythical lizard God Mo'o Kana and not just giant ferns but the Worlds Largest Prehistoric Dinosaur ferns on the planet, that are actual ruminates from the prehistoric caveman era! Then to top it off they get a farm to table artisan chocolate making workshop and enjoy samples of all super food chocolate and see Cacao Chocolate growing in its original Habitate a Rainforest! Over 100% of visitors that have visited the Amazon Rainforest say our Micro Rainforest rivals the of the Amazon, but its way, way better as there are no dangerous animals that can eat you! They "LOVE" the fact they are helping to create a legacy for future generations and that saving a micro rainforest such as ours, is something that is critical at this time in the world, as even our micro rainforest is in fact impacting our earth in a profoundly positive way & this speaks volumes for these ingenious visitors, who we feel are in a league of their own. And to us and millions of other conservation sanctuaries around the world these kinds of visitors are our treasured well wishers as they know what we are all about and become lifelong fans! Excellent, very educational tour of the King’s Gardens and rainforest vegetation. Our guide, Kana, knew a great deal about the history of Hawaii, agricultural practices of the ancients, and the vegetation to be found there. Fascinating and beautiful. The demonstration of how chocolate is made and the samples were great, too. Only disappointment was that we only saw one waterfall from a distance, never got anywhere near the water. My expectation, from reading descriptions and reviews here on this site was that we would have the opportunity to get in the water. We came dressed to get wet, so it was a bit of a let down.

Aloha Friend, Thank you for your kind review, please note we did not have you go down for your safety first and foremost, as it had been raining very hard that morning and due to the fact that with global warming there are far more life threatening flash floods each year for your safety and that of your family, when there is any signs of danger of flash floods occurring that can easily washed away an entire families in a blink of an eye, we error on the side of keeping you at a wonderful yet safe viewing distance. Also the guide would have shared with you about a second waterfall location that you can swim in weather allowing as ours is in conservation and used for farming and human consumption so we normally do not take people down there but the view is with in a safe yet inspiring viewing distance. Therefore the guide would had shared with you another waterfall location that was a fun place to swim and only two minutes from us that you could then go and see another amazing waterfall that you could go swim in, all with out the super long drive to Hana and with in a safe yet inspiring viewing distance. On our web site and in booking information it states that you get to see the beautiful waterfall of the gardens, just like at the garden of Eden, yet theirs is over a mile away! And ours is but with in yards. Thank you for your visit and helping to support a good cause while on vacation! Have a lovely rest of the day, Hope

This tour was a last minute idea, and were are so glad we decided to go. Our guide was a delight and shared many stories of the history and significance of the area. The plants were incredible, and it was super cool to be in such and old and untouched area of Maui. The chocolate tour, while a quirky touch, was fun and delicious. I really do recommend this for an 'off the beaten track' type of experience.

We were unable to make the tour due to a sickness in the family, however, The Kings Gardens Maui were more than willing to work with us insuring that we were happy with the outcome regarding reimbursement. They sent several messages checking on our family after learning of the illness, making sure that all was well. They were communicating with us on a regular basis prior to learning of the illness and making sure that we knew of the directions of how to get there. When it was obvious that we were not going to make it, they were very thoughtful in their responses. I would definitely try this tour out again next time we return to Maui due to the way they handled everything and were truly concerned.
