About
From the comfort of your private luxury yacht, enjoy an amazing experience with Hawaii’s humpback whales. Departing near Waikiki, enjoy a leisurely sail against the majestic backdrop of Diamond Head as you scan the water for majestic whales. Dolphins, sea turtles, and manta rays are often seen while relaxing aboard with your family and friends. The majestic Humpback whales migrate annually to the Hawaiian Islands between December and April. After a long crossing of the Pacific Ocean, the Humpback whales return to deliver their newborn calves off Hawaii’s warm, sheltered waters. Seeing these endangered species off Oahu is a true gift of nature!

Beautiful sunset cruise (perfect for an engagement proposal)
We had an amazing trip with Trai and Matt. The sunset cruise was beautiful and we even went sailing. They also helped me preparing for engagement proposal, and made beautiful foto’s and video’s of it. My fiancé loved it! Thanks a lot for the amazing trip and memories!

      Family reunion
We got a 12 guest yacht for me and family. It was an amazing experience as staff was friendly and very accommodating. Highlight was sunset at the same time two wales came close to our boat. What a perfect moment!

There was no boat! No show for private sunset sail!!
This was the worst experience ever. Do no book with this tour operator. I booked a $700 private sunset sailing experience for my mothers 50th birthday as a surprise. We got a confirmation for the booking. We were told we needed to bring our own food and beverages, which was surprising given the cost of this experience. We picked up our picnic supplies and then caught an Uber to the dock. When we got there there was no boat! We sat there for an hour, with our plans for a special birthday evening ruined. Then we paid for an Uber back to the hotel. I emailed and called numerous times before the reservation and also while waiting at the dock. We never got any response from anyone. Luckily Trip Advisor got involved and they did refund my money within 24 hours, but still no feedback or replies of any kind from the tour operator, and also no reimbursement for the food and beverages we purchased, nor the two Uber rides. I’m still trying to get these reimbursed as I think that’s only fair. You can’t put a price on ruining my moms special day. You only turn 50 once. This operator should be banned from Trip Advisor, but sadly they will probably close this account and just open a new one. Be wary of booking with any operator that doesn’t already have a lot of five star reviews.

      Amazing Sunset Sail
This was such an amazing experience! Kayla and Tyre were exceptional hosts. They were kind, knowledgeable, and great conversationalists. When one of our party members got sea sick, they were super accommodating and sweet. We loved that we could hook up to a bluetooth speaker to listen to jams while relaxing. We also got to see some whales and it was incredible! Really great sunset sail. Definitely recommend!

      Great for families!
Had a great time with the family sailing around Waikiki. The waters were too rough for young swimmers who still need life vests. Great time snorkeling and seeing turtles and a bunch of fish. We opted for the private tour with younger kids which did not disappoint. Sammy our first mate was great with them and our Captain made sure to engage them at every turn. Would definitely recommend for any family as they were very accommodating and explained to the kids all about sailing and the ocean.

      Horrible!
Booked on a Thursday, had confirmation and everything, went to the pier 30 minutes early, no one there for us ! Called them said our schedule is on Friday (the next day), asked us if we’re ok to go on the Friday! Of course not ! On a trip everything is scheduled! We have plans! They keep telling us was not theirs problem, cause we book from a third party. Alright, if you guys want to have a guaranteed trip , don’t book from them, they will offer you any different days/times just not what you booked or planned.

      Sailed with Captain Mike Mickelwait
Captain Mike is a wonderful instructor. We chartered his boat with him as captain on the leeward side of Oahu on a 3-4 day sail in December of 2019. He also gave me the ASA 105 test which I passed. I would highly recommend him. We anchored and swam every day and came into marinas to casually dine. Seeing the coast of Oahu from even 5 miles offshore allows you to imagine what the island looked like to seagoing voyagers hundreds and thousands of years ago. The fees were very reasonable. We hope to return for further sailing.

      Awesome crew. Great experience!
We had so much fun snorkeling and sailing! 10/10 experience. Perry and Tai were so helpful and fun. They brought us to a fantastic snorkeling spot and even helped some of us learn how to free-dive. Would recommend it to everyone looking for an awesome day adventure in Waikiki!

      Amazing !!!!
We had a 12 person group and we chartered a private monohull for four hours. The price was very fair and the views were breathtaking. Captain Perry and first mate Ty were fantastic. They took us snorkeling where we saw tons of turtles and they even took us sailing. They were amazing and we brought food and drinks with us on the boat. AMAZING experience and our group would definitely do it again!!!

      Best spent time in Oahu!
We had an absolutely fabulous time on our sailing adventure! Capitan Perry and First-mate Ty were wonderful! They tailored our trip time to what worked for us based on the weather, conditions, and our 6 yr old! We saw turtles while snorkeling, whales and dolphins while out at sea (although I’m told that it’s rare to get all 3 in one trip!!) but honestly being on the water on the boat all to ourselves was just lovely and relaxing. (A needed break from the crowds of tourists at Waikiki!!) The weather and sea life obviously made it more even more special but the boat, crew and experience were right up our alley. We went in at 8am in the morning when the water was calm - so we really couldn’t “sail” but we didn’t mind just motoring - we got out pretty far even with the snorkeling excursion. It is was the highlight of our trip!

An Intimate Sailing Adventure Near Waikiki
We chartered Honolulu Sailing's Gaugin sailboat for a three-hour "Sunset Sailing/Snorkeling" private tour to celebrate our anniversary.  This tour is a great option for one or two couples, or perhaps a small family, who want to enjoy the beautiful waters near Waikiki on a vessel that isn't packed with tourists. We boarded the Gaugin from the marina at the Kewalo Basin Harbor, which is between Waikiki and Downtown Honolulu. Captain Rick, an experienced sailor, welcomed us onboard, and First Mate Sebastian offered to stow our possessions. Sebastian said he would be happy to do whatever he could to make our journey comfortable, safe, and fun. He did not disappoint us. The Gaugin has a covered passenger section in the aft part of the boat that seats four comfortably with table between them. There is also space near the bow where you can sit or stand. (If the ocean is choppy, you'll need to hold onto the mast or ropes when you're upfront.) Below deck, there is a small galley with a refrigerator, stove, and table, as well as two bathrooms.    We brought our own cooked food and beverages, which Sebastian brought up to us from the galley whenever we wanted. He also reheated the food that needed to be served warm, and he cleaned up afterwards. Although his primary job is to help the captain and ensure our safety, he couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Sadly, Mother Nature was less cooperative. It was cloudy and cool most of the time (unusual for late April), and light rain fell intermittently.  Captain Rick went further offshore than he had planned to escape the rain, which was heavier near the shore. Unfortunately, the weather prevented us from seeing a beautiful ocean sunset, which we had been looking forward to.  Nevertheless, we still had a really good time on the boat, had some nice picture-taking opportunities near Diamond Head, Waikiki, and Kakaako, and we enjoyed learning about sailing from Captain Rick and Sebastian, and hearing about some of their previous adventures. Incidentally, I had made our reservation through the Honolulu Sailing Co. web site. When I first attempted to pay, my credit card was unexpectedly declined. A few minutes later, I got an email from my bank asking if I had initiated this purchase and wanted it to be approved. That was a little scary, but I took a chance and said yes, and I was then able to complete the transaction . I can imagine that many prospective passengers experiencing a similar credit card issue would simply switch to a different sailing company. If my experience was common, Honolulu Sailing without realizing it may be missing out on potential customers.

Humpback whales and beautiful Hawaii sunset!
What to do with a dozen friends all in town at once? Our sunset sail was wonderful! Everyone had a lovely time, enjoying the beautiful skyline and horizon. The highlight of the trip was our close sighting of humpback whales! They were less than 30 yards away at times - it's hard to say whether the kids or the adults were more excited! The crew was very helpful and the boat Tefiti (for sailing nerds) is beautiful, clean, in perfect condition, and amazingly set up for singlehanding - almost everything is automated to the point she almost sails herself. Not a spot of rust anywhere - she clearly gets a lot of TLC!

Contemplated leaving this review but giving an honest opinion for other families in search of a private snorkel tour.
Pros: price was great for 3 hours $850
    View was great.

Cons: sailboat was slower and sways more than a larger boat which caused all 7 of us to have different degrees on seasickness. To the point of two of us throwing up and feeling nauseous for days after. Not the company’s fault but a good piece of info for anyone not familiar with being on a smaller boat. The slower sail also cuts into time of snorkeling.
My main issue was the location we were dropped off was choppy and bare. Although we were told seeing sea-life wasn’t guaranteed I had certainly thought a private tour would take us somewhere worth seeing. We sailed 20-30 min away, was given no pointers for first time snorkelers, and then capt. Mike stayed on his phone while we tried to keep close to the boat in the choppy water. A little unnerving when you’re unfamiliar and have children snorkeling for the first time. Overall I had wished we chose something else to spend our money and day on.

Had a great day with Honolulu Sailing Company. It was really nice to have a private yacht and avoid the crowds packed on other boats. Our family really appreciated that the captain and crew were fully vaccinated and it made the tour very relaxing. It’s hard these days to find something to do that feels safe. We booked a snorkel cruise and will book a sunset sail before we head home to Arizona.
