- 1In 1809, Kamehameha I, who had been living at Waikiki which was once Hawaii's Royal Seat, moved his Royal Residence to Pākākā at Honolulu Harbor. Soon the area became the center for trading and, after Kamehameha the Great's death, the Royal Residence was moved again to the current location of Iolani Palace. Hundreds of years of history and hauntings reside in this Downtown area. From the Kamehameha Statue, we will walk to several buildings in the immediate vicinity and learn some of the haunted history that surrounds us.
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- gpagarigan0 contributionsFantastic unique experience!I booked this tour as part of our family’s Christmas present. All 9 of us from 79 to 8 had a fantastic time letting Lopaka’s stories capture our imaginations. I knew it was a hit as a gift when my 13 year old niece said”this is cool” within 10 minutes of the tour beginning. We have been to Oahu many times visiting family and we have done a myriad of experiences on the island. This was an exceptional and memorable evening and I will be booking another tour with Lopaka on our next trip. Mahalo Lopaka and team!Written December 30, 2024
- GrandTour554196435380 contributionsFlashlight neededI was looking forward to this tour. When the group was to start walking in the park on uneven ground in the dark we were told to turn the flashlight app on our phones. Not having that ability I chose to leave the tour and forfeit the fee I paid rather than take the chance of tripping and falling. I did not see any mention of needing a flashlight in the Tour write-up or I would have been prepared. Needless to say I was not pleased.Written November 25, 2024
- Explore153931242180 contributionsLearn about the Night Marchers from an excellent story teller!I didn't really know what to expect going into this but I was very intrigued and pleased with the whole experience! Lopaka is an excellent speaker and you can't help but be entranced by his stories about the Night Marchers. There's a little bit of walking around the park that it takes place in, while he tells you stories about specific sites that you visit. The funny thing about the whole night was I couldn't help but remember certain episodes from a podcast called Spooked where a Hawaiian man told a story about an evil entity that haunted him and his friend. I meant to ask our guide Lopaka if he'd heard of the show but forgot to do it before I left. Come to find out that our guide WAS the guy from the Spooked episode! What a crazy coincidence! I had no idea!Written September 24, 2024
- Mspradlin50 contributionsFun evening!Enjoyed our evening listening to stories of the Night Marchers. Lopaka’s voice was made for storytelling. Would recommend for something different other than the usual tourist sites.Written August 8, 2024
- chrispF4757CP0 contributionsExcellent way to spend an evening.Went with the family and had a great time! Lopaka was awesome and an excellent story teller. There was a lot of history mixed with legends of Hawaii. Might be a little scary for younger kids but still worth taking them. It’s all centered around the government buildings so minimal walking. Highly recommend!Written July 30, 2024
- A8265KYsarac0 contributionsEasy, spooky fun!Lopaka is a great storyteller, and we learned some interesting history along with the ghost stories. It was a super easy walk around the square, and you get to hear some really cool ghost stories!Written July 9, 2024
- catherinehW9005NW0 contributionsOut of the box, but brilliant!Fantastic! Excellent mix of history, ghost stories and culture. Our tour guide was brilliant - a true bard, weaving stories and experiences into exciting narratives. He was also conscious that there were two 10-year-old children in the group, and he let us know that the adults could walk with him between stops for the more gruesome details if they liked, but he was leaving them out of the main narratives. If you're into paranormal things, this is for you (but take your meds before you go - it's a bit interactive). If you're a bit of a cynic, enjoy the creepy ride! It's a great way to spend an evening in Honolulu.Written July 4, 2024
- VIPGinger0 contributionsAmazing Spirited TourThis tour is enthralling! It’s so interesting to learn ghost stories from other cultures and to be able to walk the paths of some of the royalty that lived in our most beautiful state. Highly recommend.Written June 17, 2024

- Compass597140569030 contributionsKnowledgeable and respectfulExcellent content well presented even in a large group. Assistants helped those at the fringes keep up with the short walk (around two city blocks). Ample opportunities to take photographs and videos.Written November 2, 2023
- jessicahE6548HA0 contributionsAn engaging paranormal tour! This isn’t just any paranormal tour. Lopaka is incredibly engaging and a talented storyteller that dives deep into the history of the Night Marchers. He mixes personal experience along with the history and spoke to all of us as an individual at some point, sharing photos and videos of different paranormal things. This really made the whole experience stand out from other ghost tours we have experienced in the past. I would eagerly say that the Waikiki Night Marchers Ghost Tour is a must! Thank you, Lopaka, for a one of a kind experience! One of my pictures taken at the end had something strange. An invisible hand and a muffled face with faint markings. Coincidence?Written June 22, 2023
- Jet569010196720 contributionsWonderful experienceOur guide Lopaka, was a wonderful storyteller and very knowledgeable about the history of the island. Would highly recommend.Written June 15, 2023
- johnM1983PS0 contributionsWaikiki through a paranormal lensThe tour guide, Lopaka, really cares about the material and does a lot to bring it to life. He's very in depth and is eager to share all the stories and some photos of what he's experienced in the area. This is very much a storytelling and walking tour which I absolutely enjoyed would love to do again. Thanks again for the experience and it's definitely one of the most memorable paranormal tours I've been on!Written June 1, 2023
- Joy68680 contributions"Ghost" TourI'm surprised that I am the first to write a review for this experience. We had an enjoyable time taking a walking tour through Waikiki with Lopaka. Loved this. It was a very unique way to explore Hawaii"s history and folklore. It was both entertaining and educational especially if you are into the supernatural. Lopaka, our guide, was knowledgeable, engaging, and captivating. His storytelling combined with the backdrop of the location was chilling and spooky. I loved that he was able to give background as it related to historical events and Hawaiian legends. Overall, if you are into the paranormal and history, this is a perfect ghost tour and I would highly recommend it.

Both my wife and I had an awesome experience with Master Hawaiian Storyteller Lopaka Kapanui. His knowledge of Old Honolulu Hawaiian History is extensive. He shared and taught participants of the tour at an understanding level. This gave my wife and I an individualized special experience. I had such a great time, I had to go again. I do recommend going on this tour more than once and attending on different moon phases. On my second tour, "Someone" showed up in one of my photos at the Banyan tree. Highly recommended.

For two longtime fans of Lopaka Kapanui, the Ghosts of Old Honolulu tour exceeded our already very high expectations! Lopaka is a captivating storyteller, keeping us all hooked for this 90-minute tour. Regardless of your views on the spirit world, you will be moved by his deep respect for every person whose story he tells, as well as Hawaii’s beautiful traditions. He was also kind enough to sign my well-worn copy of his book, Mysteries of Hawaii. I will definitely take another tour the next time I am fortunate enough to visit Oahu!

Lopaka is legit! My friend wanted to go on this specific one since he is the Glen Grant protege (he is the original ghost storyteller/Obake tales). I remember reading Glen Grant stories when I was younger. The rest of these ghost walking tour people probably have not trained with the best Hawaii had to offer. There were 9 of us total so it was very intimate. I guess the only thing is I wished it lasted longer and we went to Kawaihao Church and other places around downtown. My friend wants to go on the bus tour next month.

We all enjoyed Lopaka. It was fun yet very interesting evening. Growing up here on Oahu its really interesting and we definitely learned a lot of history. Lopaka is an amazing story teller with so much details. This was my ohana's second time booking with Lopaka and we will definitely be back for more experiences. I highly recommend booking a tour and experience all the history and stories with him. Not only the stories will give you goosebumps, the energy will.

"Lopaka" Kapanui of the Mysteries of Hawaii is the ultimate best of Hawaii's legend to share our Hawaiian historical stories of time past! You are experiencing a true living treasure and a professional story teller of our Hawaiian kupunas. This esteemed & renowned Ghost Story Teller is a tribute to Glenn Grant who started telling our true stories of Old Hawaii. The same stories Lopaka grew up with like other Hawaiians, whose kupunas told the stories orally. Hats off to Trip Advisor for offering this true Hawaiian tours.
The only hope is that attendees pay for their children & not think it's a freebie; especially when they disrupt the feeling of the tour. Children are not appropriate for these tours & it breaks the true experience.
Also, in these days, children no matter the age must pay for a ticket.🤦♀️

I took five of my friends on the Ghosts of Old Honolulu Walking Tour, as they had read about Mysteries of Hawaii from an article on Honolulu Civil Beat and were excited to have the chance to learn about the legends and mysteries of the downtown area. All of my friends were delighted by the friendly, educational, and thrilling evening they experienced and love Robert Lopaka Kapanui's stye of storytelling so much that they want to have other opportunities to connect with him. This is a great experience that is unforgettable and filled with rich history about Oahu.

The best ghost tour in Hawaii period!!! Lopaka brings so much history and knowledge of Hawaiian culture along with award winning master storytelling to keep you intrigued throughout. They are easy to work with and have a true passion for perpetuating these stories for future generations. I thoroughly enjoy this tour and learn new things every time I am blessed enough to join Mysteries of Honolulu.

There were some really interesting stories and sharing - but I wish there had been a little more history, and a little more talk about the history of the locations, and less time spent on what occurred during previous tours. Additional - need a better method for sharing images / videos, as it was pretty hard to see in such a large group.
I did really enjoy the interactive pieces.

Absolutely impressed by Lopakaʻs tour last night! At the foundation, it was fantastic storytelling that incorporated history, place, and culture. But it was also interactive. What a privilege to support this Native Hawaiian owned business! Will definitely recommend to visitors and locals alike. Mahalo for the chills and thrills!
