I was craving a more authentic experience to learn about the hilltribe culture than what I could access around Chiang Mai. So very glad my research led me to this company on my visit to Chiang Rai. I had an amazing day with Anan.
When booking the tour, Melissa was very easy to work with, and clearly spelled out the details. Anan and his driver picked me up at my hotel in Chiang Rai on time. The vehicle was comfortable for the roads we traveled on (some were an adventure!) When he asked me what my priorities for the day were, we revised the schedule to skip the tea plantation and do more villages...I got to visit five tribes in all. When he realized I was interested in textiles and taking pictures, he made sure we saw some wonderful weavers and knew where to stop for great photos.
Anan has such a friendly and easy going manner that when we visited a village it didn’t seem intrusive at all. I was the only visitor at each stop we made. He is very knowledgeable about the area and speaks good English. It was wonderful to visit his village, meet his family, and eat the delicious lunch his wife cooked for us. To top off an already fabulous day, at our last stop they were celebrating Lahu New Year, where many villages gather one day a year. What a visual feast!
To reserve a spot, you will pay the company a deposit by PayPal, and give the balance to your guide in cash. You will also pay any admission fees ( if there are any), pay for lunch for the guide and driver, and fill up the gas tank on the way back into town. For me it added up to 750 baht extra. The price of the day was worth every penny for such a unique and memorable experience with wonderful people.

I put lot of effort to choosing the right company for our hill tribes trip and to be honest, trip with Thailand Hilltribe Holidays was even better than I expected.
Our driver, Sam, drove safely and did not use the phone while driving :) Car was comfortable.
Our guide, Surachian(Surichian?), was very good and cheerful. Good english.
Firstly we visited a camp with about 8 tribes, and eventough it was a comercial camp, we did not felt like a walking wallet (like in other countries in similar places). We bought souvenirs and give some money for photos, but we did not feel pushed. The tribe people were smiling, nice and were not bothered to take photos.
Then we made a stop in Hmong village and did a little walk through. This village is quite advanced (electricity, hard road). Then we moved to Karen village to see real life of little less developed people. We even visited a home of one family and a grandma tried to teach me how to sew their wonderful cloth. It was nice to compare real life of two different tribes.
Finally we did a stop in a beautiful Mae Sung cave with bats and a temple inside.
Overall I consider this trip very worthy spent money.

Our guide Winai and driver Diew were pleasant who organised a relaxing and flexible trip. There were no rush at he places we visit as we spend longer at site we like and a quick look at those that needed less time. Highlight was the honour to have meals together at the Karen village where both Winai and Diew help to prepare.

Make sure to read their description properly. Overall, it was good experience but having to pay for the extra cost (gas, food..etc) I found to be a bit overpriced compared to other experiences I had while in Chiang Mai. There's other experiences that includes gas and food. I also found the organization and structure of the activities to be lackluster. There wasn't a set schedule or itinerary. It was more of a free flow and if that's what you like, then this could be good for you. However for us, we didn't know exactly what to do, so we were hoping they would have a schedule/activity planned for us.

I agree... please make sure you read our tour description fully and correctly !!  If you are looking for a package all-inclusive tour, with fixed program and structure, then this won't be for you. If you're looking for something more 'authentic' and non-touristy, whereby we are discovering local life as it REALLY is...unstaged.. behind the scenes..then this is for you.  We have an outline itinerary which we follow, but it's kept loose, so that we can personalise each trip for each groups interests. For example, some groups are more interested in photography or trekking or handicrafts etc. and so our guides will personalise the trip along the way accordingly. Each group and each trip is unique. That's why we only offer private tours, and these are more costly than group tours. Pricing wise, we do clearly state what this trip includes and excludes. Retrieving this booking history, you requested to cancel this trip (after you had read properly the tour desctiption and price), however as it was less than 24hrs before the trip was due to commence, any cancellation would have meant no refund, so you decided to continue with the tour.  I'm sorry that our trip wasn't suited to you, but hope you still had a good time in Chiang Mai.

Go beyond the temples, the streetside food stands and the sandy beaches to see another side of Thailand. This isn't a polished and packaged commercial Disney-experience. It's an authentic snapshot of life in a rural village that left us with some lasting memories. Unlike many others we researched, this is an honest and ethical tour. Get out of Chiang Mai and spend a day with the Hill Tribe tour.

So amazing! This was one or our favorite parts of our whole vacation in SE Asia. Yu and Chai were amazing guides and really helped us to understand their culture and everyday life as members of the Karen Hill Tribe. We stopped at markets, shared snacks, saw a New Years celebration at another village, ate lunch at Yu's village (which was amazing and delicious!), and they took us hiking through the rice farms and jungle. It was simply wonderful.

We were on the tour with our 4 and 6 year old kid. Though I was not sure whether my kids can fully comprehend the experience, our guide Mr Sak had demonstrated deep knowledge about the tribes as well as the jungle and my kids were thrilled! They were amazed by their encounter of animals (boars, spiders, snakes) and and tried to drink spring water from a cup improvised by a leaf. As parents it was such a joy to see them experience new things and pushing their limit to try. I was initially hesitant to "Baan Tong Luang" cause it felt crafted but with Mr Sak's story telling along the way we saw things with a different perspective. The school visit brought a good perspective to my kids as of how blessed we are to have easy access to education in the city. My personal favorite moment was being able to sit down at the Hmong tribe in the mountain with a few villagers and we exchanged conversation. Thanks Mr Sak and Mr Sun who gave us such unforgettable experience.

Pat, our guide, and Sam, our driver, were very friendly. We liked that we would stop at local, non-touristy, markets and coffee shops. The Villages were amazing. Seeing where these tribes really live was amazing. Then they cooked the food we picked up at the market. Pat does really care about these tribes and you hand the money directly to the tribe for lunch. Pat doesnt take any money for lunch, it goes all to the Tribe.
What could be better? I thought we were going to spend time with the villagers and have a chance to ask them questions (using Pat as the interpreter), talk about their lives, find out more about them and their village directly from them. However, you basically walk around the village and not really interact with the few villagers that were actually there. Also, Pat had a lot of political opinions that he continually talked about that didnt have anything to do with our tour. I wasnt interested in hearing about his opinions. I would much rather be discussing the villages themselves and how they live.

My sister-in-law and I had the great pleasure of spending a day with our guide, Daro, and driver, Diew, in the hills near Chiang Mai. Daro is a Karen tribe member and most generous in sharing not only the general culture of the Karen tribe, but his own personal history of leaving Myanmar and coming to live in the hills of Thailand. We visited a very small Karen village and an older couple cooked lunch for us with ingredients Daro had purchased at a market on our way. The couple exhibited shyness while also being welcoming, but the shyness could have been the language barrier. Through Daro we enjoyed a conversation with the gentleman. After this visit we stopped at a Hmong village in an area where opium use to be grown, but the tribe now grows beautiful roses to be sent to the flower markets in Bangkok. Very friendly people. I can't remember the exact relationship, but Daro has a cousin married to one of their cousins, or similar connection, so we were definitely lucky to enjoy the connection as well! I highly recommend this unobtrusive style of getting some insight to the hill tribe life and I highly recommend Daro as your guide.

Our day visiting the Hill Tribe villages was the highlight of our trip to Chiang Mai. There were 10 people in our family varying in age from late 80s to 9 years old, and every one of us felt this was a valuable, authentic, and amazing tour. Our goal was to visit the Hill Tribes in the most authentic way possible, and from the moment we were picked up, it was clear that was the motto of our guides. The relationships they had with the villagers, teachers at the school, and various people we met along the way made our visit unique and special. A photographer took photos of our day, and shared them with us at the end of our journey. We loved every minute and would count it as a MUST DO!!!
