After pickup from your hotel in Amman, settle inside your private, climate-controlled car and journey through Jordan’s countryside to Madaba, known as the ‘City of Mosaics.’
As you travel, take in the rugged desert landscapes, and listen as your driver points out places of interest. After roughly an hour, meet up with a local guide in Madaba and enter St. George’s Church. This modest-looking, 19th-century Greek Orthodox church houses the precious Madaba Map, a 6th-century floor mosaic portraying the ancient Holy Land and Jordan.
Take in the interior and walk around the mosaic, set in the apse. Marvel at its intricacy, admiring the detailed renderings of Jericho, the Dead Sea, and streets and buildings of Jerusalem at the center. Note how the map shows sites connected with biblical events, and learn from your guide how it has been dated to sometime between 542 and 570.
Continue to Mount Nebo, where ancient tradition holds that the prophet Moses first saw the Promised Land before he died. Join up with a local guide and soak in the panoramic views from the summit, just as Moses is said to have done thousands of years ago. On a clear day, the views stretch across the Jordan Valley to as far as Jericho and Jerusalem.
See the modern sculpture denoting Moses’ staff, and head inside the modern Memorial Church of Moses, which incorporates the excavated remnants of a Byzantine church.
Wander around the archaeological relics discovered here, including a clutch of ancient floor mosaics, dating from between the 4th and 6th centuries. Admire the still-vivid depictions of animal, pastoral, and hunting scenes as your guide sheds light on their history.
Finally, reconvene with your driver and return to Amman where your tour concludes with a hotel drop-off.
