Select Date and Travellers
2 travellers
Before online shopping, megamalls, supermarkets, and eBay, retail trade was solely done at markets. Join this Hong Kong tour to get the lowdown on all the city’s glorious market action, from gorgeous ferns at the Flower Market, and bargain clothing and handbags at the Ladies’ Market to the latest model gadgets and sportswear in Mong Kok. You can’t visit the city without experiencing its extensive and thrilling shopping scene!
  • A small-group, guided walking tour of Hong Kong markets
  • Visit off-the-beaten-track attractions, from feng shui advisers to songbirds
  • Enjoy informative commentary on the history and culture of the city
  • Have a chance to shop for unique souvenirs
What to Expect
Your small-group walking tour begins at Hong Kong’s Flower Market, where you’ll explore 50 fragrant shops selling everything from “lucky” houseplants to bonsai trees. Your guide will give you an insider’s perspective on the history and culture of the famous Asian city, including its shopping rituals. From there, you’ll move to nearby Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, where more than 70 songbird stalls display the city’s most popular pets. You’ll get a chance to observe local bird-keeping customs, including the intricate cages where the chirping songstresses are kept. You’ll escape the tourist track with a unique visit to Fa Yuen Street, loved by locals for its bargain-priced clothes and household goods; it’s also one of the world’s most densely populated neighborhoods. Get a taste of local culture and discover a street selling traditional wedding clothes and feng shui items. You’ll also get a peek at Yua Ma Tei, the oldest theater in Kowloon and now the Chinese Opera house, before exploring a century-old fruit market and the bustling food stands of Temple Street.

  • Local Impact: How you will help the local community by joining this tour:
  • During the tour you visit a local street market where vendors get to operate their businesses without having to pay the city's otherwise exorbitant rent. After the Second World War and the Chinese Civil War in the 50s and 60s, Hong Kong was full of the poor and many refugees. To make a living, many families relied on illegally hawking goods on roads meant for cars. At the beginning of the 70s when Hong Kong went from a developing to a developed economy, the government at the time introduced a licensing system that would phase out these street markets by two generations. In fact, the number of licensed street vendors have shrunk from tens of thousands in the early 70s to thousands today, and there is a market disappearing every few years. One market you visit on the tour is widely considered by locals as the best in the city, and your visit will help it continue to thrive.

Just finished this tour and it was great. Small group - good pace and lots of interesting places, facts and sights. Danny was a terrific guide - friendly, knowledgeable and provided insights I don’t think I would have got from a bigger more commercial tour. Thanks.
