- adammoseley40 contributionsBAD TOUR - CANCELLED LAST MINUTEHorrible experience. On Christmas Eve, with less than 24 hour notice, the tour company cancelled the trip. (I booked through Viator, a subsidiary of Tripadvisor, who mandates consumers can only cancel with more than 24 hour notice.) Luckily, I was able to go with another tour company. When contacted, the original tour company claimed it was cancelled due to weather. However, when I went to Rainbow Mountain, there was no issues with weather. I talked to other tour guides from other services and they said there was no issue with weather. Additionally, the other tour services speculated this service suddenly had their guides absent due to Christmas and just blamed weather. I would not trust this company ever and would recommend to go with other services to Rainbow Mountain.Written January 2, 2025
- Aghia0070 contributionsRainbow Mountains - Honest ReviewHad a great day out in the Rainbow Mountains organized by Machu Pich Reservations. Even though it is not a long trek up to the top, being over 5000m high you will feel the effects of the lack of oxygen. As long as you take it nice and easy, drink plenty of water you will do it, you don’t even need trekking boots, just a decent pair of trainers will do At the top the weather can change suddenly as we found out, wind, then scattered shower followed by hailstones so make sure you have a warm fleece and waterproof jacket with you at all times. If you think you are going to struggle or have just come into Cusco and not had a chance to aclimatise then recommend that you let your guide get you a horse to take you up three quarters of the way, that way you still get to experience walking the last bit whilst safeguarding your health. Reason why I am saying is that because in our group, one couple were rushed to hospital in an ambulance due to the altitude and then whilst on the way down a young girl collapsed in the back of our van and we had to get her out and giver her oxygen, thanks Shep. Machu Pichu Reservations can you make sure that you remove used oxygen bottles as the first one we used was empty, second one nearly empty, luckly the third one was full.Written November 6, 2024

- fernandolF7874WH0 contributionsHands down one of the private tours we've doneMy wife and I are on our honeymoon, travelling throughout Peru for three weeks. We booked this tour back in January of 2024 and have been looking forward to it for many months. First off, there seemed to be some kind of dispute between the local leaders allowing access to Mount Vinikunka so our original tour was put into question. It just so happend that this dispute landed the day before we were set to start. The tour company was forthright with us and offered an immediate solution via the Palcoyo Mountain. Luckily for us, en route with our tour guide Anibal and driver Victor, they recieved confirmation that we could access Mount Vin via another road. Success! Anibal, our guide for the day, was such a pleasure to be around. He is funny, kind, and knowledgeable in his craft. We couldn't have been happier with how the day went. Being a private tour, we felt more secure going with our own guide at our own pace as the altitude is no joke! Again, Anibal was fully prepared, offering extra warm clothing like touques and gloves if needed. He had some spray that we would put on our hands and inhale rapidly to help with the altitude which came in handy. From the moment we were picked up to dropped off, we knew we were in great hands and will always look back on the day we got up to 5,036 m with a smile on our face. This tour is a must for those who want a more personal touch to hiking up to Mount Vinikunka. Having gone through it, we feel it was worth every cent! Thanks Anibal and Victor for an unforgettable experience!Written August 14, 2024

- Anne M0 contributionsDo not assume you will visit Rainbow mountain with this group. Beware!!!!!Do not rely on this company if you are on limited time in your vacation schedule. The company CANCELED our trip within one day prior with no explanation given or email indicating the cancellation. As a result it was too late to find another group to take us. The Viator team was helpful for the refund but really????? Cancelling within a day? I had a no cancellation policy with them so we could not make alternate arrangements in advance. The only way I knew about it was it disappeared from the app and went to the cancelled page without anyone informing me of the change. My email is current but I received no message in advance. We had to call from Peru to find out what happened and no one could address this from Viator. This group should be removed from Trip Advisor website and Viator, they are not a responsible company to deal with. There policy is unfair given the end result. I will be very careful using this trip advisor and Viator sight in the future due to the negative experience in this case.Written June 17, 2024
- julsey_kingshott0 contributionsUnmissable day out to be had.Mum and I had a fabulous day. Everything ran smoothly. Roger, our guide, was fantastic 👏. He imparted so much knowledge about the local environment, culture, flora, and fauna. He was super kind to my mum, who struggled a bit with the terrain. She is 73, and with his help, she managed the whole walk, including the climb, to the highest outcrop. What a gent. Our driver, Lewis, was also very nice. He drove safely, and the car was spotless. The breakfast and lunch was delicious 😋. I am a vegetarian, and my needs were met. The trip in itself is definitely unmissable. It is breathtakingly beautiful 😍 and should not be missed. This is a MUST. Great value, great day out. It's definitely something to write home about.Written May 7, 2024
- Getaway8165250 contributionsLifetime memoryI went to the Palccoyo Rainbow Mounteen with a private tour. They come for me to my hotel in Cusco in the exact time. The tour was really beautifull not only at Palccoyo, but from Cusco to Palccoyo and back also, because the route goes between very nice hills. On the way to there we stoped for a breakfast, and on the way back for a lunch, in the same restaurant. At Palccoyo the walking route wasn’t steep, it was a really nice walk, the problem for me was only the breathing, because we started the walk at 4600 m, and finished at 4900 m. So we had to stop often to relax a little. My guide Anibal was a very caring and nice guy, he helped me in everything., thank you so much for him for this nice tour.Written May 6, 2024

Everything is very beautiful but it could be better due to the lack of guidance from the tourism company. I advise when purchasing the tour to inform the prices going up to a certain location by motorbike, horse or quad bike, this has to be booked at least two days in advance. It doesn't leave you at the end, but it takes you halfway and you have more time to enjoy it and take photos. There are two places on the mountain: one is flat where you can see the colorful mountain up close and the other needs to climb further to take the traditional photo. Both have a long queue, so if you get close by motorbike or quad bike you can enjoy it more. However, those who are already acclimatized and have resistance, it is certainly better to enjoy the ascent and descent standing up, as we did. It was great, but tiring, but it was all worth it

Rainbow mountain is a must see if you are staying in Cusco and I would highly recommend doing the trip with the Rainbow Mountain Cusco Tour Company. Anibal our guide for the day was exceptional. He not only kept us entertained with local stories and facts about the area but took so much care to ensure we all reached the top of Rainbow Mountain at our own pace. At 5,200m it is a challenge! He was funny, kind and also an expert at taking the best photos! There was nothing he didn’t know and we stopped a few times en route to enjoy spectacular views and to meet a herd of Alpacas! Victor our driver was also superb and made us all feel safe despite the zig zag roads. Thank you for a great day Anibal… memories made for a lifetime! 🫶🏻🌈🦙

Anibal was an excellent tour guide and my friend and I had a wonderful time! It’s a long drive there and back - four hours each way but the views on the bus were spectacular and Anibal was funny and engaging throughout the whole trip. We were also very impressed with the driver who skillfully navigated curvy mountain roads on a cliff (backing up included). Rainbow Mountain itself is incredible and well worth the trip, one of the best hikes I’ve ever done. It was tough, we hadn’t been in Cusco long and weren’t adjusted well to the altitude but Anibal had our group take frequent breaks and was kind and encouraging the whole way. Eventually our whole group made it up to the top and we got some incredible pictures (Anibal knew all the spots for pictures and helped us take several). Highly recommend Rainbow Mountain Tour Company for a trip to Rainbow Mountain and Anibal as a guide.

I originally selected the 7am departure but changed to 4am and was very glad I did so. We had two tour guides (C)annibal and Bryant. Cannibal was the lead guide and he was full of energy which really lit up the tour bus. We had breakfast and got to rainbow mountain around 915am, and a few of us decided to hike instead of riding the horses. Cannibal stayed behind to make sure guests riding horses all got horses, and Bryant hiked with us to make sure we were ok. I think none of the guests have been to elevation that high, we started at 4400m elevation and to the top was 5036m so over 600m elevation gain. I hike a lot but I wasn’t sure how my body was going to react, luckily I was fine and made to the peak in about 1.5 hours, the hike was mostly flat with some hills. The last section of the hike is not reachable by horse, so guests had to hike two parts, one to the lower part and one to the peak, they were quite steep. The tour had oxygen masks prepared just in case luckily no one in my group needed it that day. So the tip for this tour is the hike is not for everyone, depends on how your body reacts to high altitude and your general health status, it might be a good idea to take the horses (it’s about 100 soles for round trip). Another tip is since guests have to hike the last sections, if your body can handle it, make sure to hike to the peak, the view is way better and you will be wowed. The hike down was much easier. Since the tour involves some challenging elements, both Cannibal and Bryant were very attentive throughout the hike to make sure everyone was ok and did not fall behind. Overall I really enjoyed the tour and I think the guides did a great job. One suggestion to the operator is gratuity, since there were 2 guides and 1 driver, I wanted to tip them but with diff amounts, but it was difficult since at the end the drop off was quick and I thought it would be awkward to hand diff ppl diff amounts while everyone was watching. So if there were a tip box of sorts in the van it be much easier.

We left cusco at 4 am and stopped for a light basic breakfast including coco leaf tea which I would highly recommend. We were one of the first groups to start hiking and although we took our sweet time (and didnt take horses) we were able to get to rainbow mountain with plenty of time for pictures and what not. We also went to red valley, which was gorgeous and well worth the extra effort. Our guide, nicknamed Cannibal and shown lounging in a group photo, was such a great spirit. He played music to keep our spirits up and when we were exhausted he had plenty of energy to lend you, dancing this way and that. He even gave us insight as to how most people pronounce Machu Picchu wrong and what it means when you say it wrong! Lunch after the hike was delicious with options for beef or chicken based meal with rice, pesto noodles, or a vegetarian soup and salad option. Would highly recommend and request Canibal as a guide.

Definitely worth booking! Anibal was our tour guide. He was friendly, patient, timely, and knowledgeable. His English was great. The duration to get to rainbow mountain was 3.5 hours. However, it went by quickly as we stopped for breakfast, the scenery was beautiful, and Anibal was very communicative. Anibal was very prepared for assisting me as the altitude was getting to me.
The tour was great at being responsive to questions prior to the tour and explaining what to expect, what to bring, and what not to bring.
The driver, Jaime was great as he got us where we needed to be on time and he mastered navigating through the challenging roads.
Overall, this trip was amazing, fun, and challenging. If you would like to visit the rainbow mountain, you should definitely book this tour and request Anibal and Jaime!

Our tour was with Happy Gringo Tours out of Cusco.
Our guide seemed disinterested unless you spoke Spanish. The tour was supposed to begin with pickup at 4:30am and include breakfast, but actually started at 8:30 and once in the minibus we were told that there's no breakfast. ( so I hope that you ate something)
After a long drive without any explanation of the area or history, we arrived at the quad base to drive up the mountain. Our guide led the way up to the landing. We were the last group of the day so there were no vendors or alpacas to have photos with. My husband and I were having difficulty with the altitude and unsteady on our feet so the guide went up to the highest peak with the group and left us to work our way to the lower vantage point. He seemed to be quite rushed.
When we had spent a short time viewing the mountain, we headed back to the quads. On the way down, I wanted to stop to take some photos but was not allowed ( though others were. )
Long story short: Rainbow Mountain is breathtaking...just don't go with Happy Gringo!

Excellent agency location.
The agency has the best prices for tours.
The owner is quite charismatic.
We took the Sacred Valley, Colorful Mountain and Humantay Laguna tours.
All tours were perfect.
The agency also sells bus tickets to various destinations in Peru, such as Lima, Nasca, Puno...
As well as selling train tickets to Machu Picchu and tickets to Machu Picchu.
Thanks to his friendliness, we stopped by every day to talk on the way back from the tour, and he bought another one.
The owner gave many suggestions for things to do around the square and recommended an excellent restaurant that we went to for 3 days! Andean Grill!

Our guide was knowledgeable, we stopped for breakfast and dinner and there was food for everyone and it was delicious. We didn’t think the hike was too tough, but if you’re from sea level pace yourself and stop if you’re not feeling well. Someone on the trail had fainted off of a horse from altitude sickness, thankfully not in our group. While our whole group hiked, there are options to take horses or motorcycles and the cost is not included. Remember to bring cash, the locals charge between 2-3 soles to use the restroom, 4 or 5 for the one bathroom near the top of the hike. And bring hand sanitizer!
Please note there is a long drive from Cusco to the mountain, with the shortcut road closed it took us about 3 hours each way with some rough roads.

Rainbow mountain is about as high up as you can hike in the Cusco area. 5000+ meters. If you can do this day trip, feel confident that you can do either the Machu Picchu or Salkantay multi day treks. I am 63. I did both over 8 days. The nice thing is that the local indigenous community who hosts you on their land for Rainbow mountain have horses and ATV’s available to bail you out if the altitude or steepness get to you. They also sell woolen hats and gloves for less than you will pay in Cusco.
If you are only in Cusco for a couple of days, this is definitely the day trip to choose - preferably after a night’s sleep at altitude, though.
Note the number of young, fit people who didn’t last 5 minutes once we got back into the van for the drive back to Cusco;)

Written November 19, 2021
We also had a flight that we needed to make and it was not a problem. It depends on the tour group you go with. It is an all day tour from Cusco. (And hopefully you don’t get something like a flat tire on the way home). There are many companies that do this tour and the return-back-to-Costco times are usually very accurate. A Private tour is also an option.
