          Really bad tour
it was a terrible tour and terrible guide. we woke up at 4 AM to be picked up at five but they picked us at 5:40 but we returned on time, so you can imagine we didn't have any time after 2 hours hike to see the red mountain. this was crazy and waste of money. I would definitely not recommend this company. And the guides English was not really good.

Our guide was very experienced and made our excursion great. He explained interesting facts about the Pervian culture. The scenery was stunning. I highly recommend this tour.

          Excellent guide and great day
A great experience and thought the guide - Roger - was excellent! Enjoyed the day. The hike was tough for some with the high altitude, but there are horses available to get you up most of the way if needed. Breakfast and lunch was included which was good after a 4am pickup time!

Private tour highly recommended traveling with young kids under 5yo
If you planning to visit Rainbow mountain especially with kids under 10 years old, private tour is the way to go. This company took care of us. Started at 03:30 took us in a comfortable van with warm blankets on a 3 hour ride, had breakfast eggs, sausages western style mixed peruvian. Our tour guide made assured that had everything with them o2 tank, snacks, water.. Brought another guy just incase needed help with kids.. Thanks, everyone was okay tolerated the high altitude. I've seen some hikers throwing up along the way, altitude was intense. If you've plans, make sure had enough time to acclimate, atleast 3-4 days in Cusco altitude sickness, no joke.. Drink  a lot of water, bring gatorade powder, and bring meds such NSAIDs very helpful.. Horses are also available if needed one way or roundtrip.

Great trip with Anibal made fun conversation and kept us safe and made sure we were always comfortable. Compared to other guides his English was nigh perfect - had air conditioning, stops to catch our breath and good jokes too. Highly recommend

A Colorful and Unique Hike to Rainbow Mount and the Red Valley
The hike to Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley was breath-taking (visually and physically). The trailhead starts at around 4,300 meters (14,000 feet) and climbs to just over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet). The hike is approximately 4 K (2.5 miles) with the last 1/4 being the steepest part. Most take 2 hours, but no pressure in speed with lots of stops that have snacks/drinks/tourist stuff to buy along the way. Some in our group stopped at the Rainbow Mountain view point (saddle) and some hiked another 45 minutes up to view the Red Valley. There were 100s of people at the Rainbow Mountain saddle, but we seemed to the only ones to hike onto the Red Valley (a peaceful and beautiful view well worth the additional hike). Alpaca Expedition guide (Ruben) and his assistant, driver, and chef for breakfast and lunch were outstanding, friendly, and very knowledgeable. We left Cusco about 4:30 am and returned to our hotel in Cusco around 5;30 pm

          Breathtaking Rainbow Mountain
We decided that Salkantay Trail wasn’t enough so we added this breathtaking trip to Rainbow Mountain. It definitely needs to be on the backend of any trip to get acclimated to the elevation but it was worth every extra step and out of breath moment. Horses can be rented to help with the climb. Ruben was energetic and kept us motivated. You can opt to hike another hour (there and back) to Red Valley. We had a wonderful breakfast as well as lunch. These chefs from Alpaca Expeditions are amazing.

          Superb day tour!
This was a wonderful tour, Holger was extremely knowledgeable and I learned so much! He went above and beyond to make sure I was able to see everything I wanted and take plenty of stops for pictures or just to take the amazing sites in. I was able to book the the tour last minute and they were more than accommodating with my schedule, I even reached out to Holger on WhatsApp before booking to ask a million questions and he was so helpful. The transportation was clean, safe, and comfortable! I plan on coming back to Cusco and I will most certainly call Holger for every tour. I highly recommend Andina Expeditions for your tours!

Great time and excellent flexibility of tour company
We had a great time exploring Cusco on this tour. Somehow our booking date got messed up and we had booked on the wrong day. I contacted the company about this not realizing until the time the tour was supposed to start and they managed to arrange for us to do the tour one hour later! We were so pleased to not miss this in our itinerary. Our guide, Patricia, was knowledgeable, kind and enjoyable. She worked hard to ensure we still got all of the elements of the tour that we were interested in despite us starting late and losing an hour. If you want to learn more about Incan culture in Cusco, I highly recommend.

          Life changing
The area is beautiful and breathtaking but what people don't know Is how poor the people living here. This area is not controlled by the state/govt. Instead it is ran and preserved by the locals who live here to avoid exploitation and the destruction of the scenery. The farmers who live in this secluded location rely heavily on their potato crops for food. Currently they are suffering from a drought which threatens their lively hood and very existence. My family and I brang gifts a bread, candies and toys to give to the children in this area. You will pass many on the long dirt road to the mountains. This was a very emotional experience for us. I cried tears the entire time just seeing the harsh conditions in which they live. The govt refuses to help. Seeing the smiles on their faces filled my heart with joy. They were so grateful for just a loaf of bread. Please bring anything you can to help these beautiful people. Pay extra. Don't leave garbage. Help preserve this beautiful place and support the local people who spend their lives protecting such an amazing wonder of the world!

          Amazing experience
There are two guides and a driver. They all did an amazing job! Whatever your pace, they'll look after you. If the weather is good (which it was for us), the views are simply stunning. The rainbow mountain is just one part of a breathtaking landscape. A very good breakfast and lunch are included in the price.

          Spectacular sexy alpacas !
This was amazing trip and very worth it . The hike is hard because of the high altitude, but it’s the most spectacular hike I’ve ever done. Our tour guide was Hanibel and bryan they were both so sweet and funny! THey guided us with music and stories to make sure we got to the top! We rented the horses for part of the way and it was lovely and made the hiking part much more bearable ! Strongly strongly recommend !

Anibal was a wonderful tour guide, full of energy and knowledge. This mountain hike was not for the faint of heart. Extreme altitude and steady incline the whole way. Anibal gave me a walking stick + lots of altitude essential oils to help. You can take a horse to the top, but must carry extra cash. I did not make it all the way up, but 2/3s of the way. Still enjoyed myself and the steady pace, "little by little" I kept trying to go. Long day, bumpy, windy roads. Breakfast and lunch were okay. If you want to get a great hike and some rural/farm views outside the city, I would recommend this trip.

This was a great tour, well worth the early wake-up. The day starts with a drive to the breakfast spot, a cozy restaurant near Rainbow Mountain, for some hearty food, fruit and tea, followed by a drive up to the start of the hiking trail through picturesque landscapes and local communities. Dress warmly with layers as the temperature ranges from quite chilly to warm once you get moving. After a short hike to see how the group does with the high elevation, there is an option to rent a horse (helpful if you are not acclimatized), however note the horse path stops close to the end of the trail, which is one of the most challenging areas due to the steep incline and high altitude. Basic toilet facilities are available along the trail every half hour or so. Ours was one of the first groups to get to the top, which was great as the area gets very busy later in the morning, which makes it tricky to get pictures, etc. Before heading down we were given the option to explore the Red Valley as well for an hour or so before heading back down. Rainbow Mountain itself was wonderful, but so were the stunning sights along the way: glaciers, colourful mountains, rivers and valleys and herds of grazing alpacas. Highly recommend!

Try to go early on this tour if you go during wet season as it rains in the afternoon. The hike is not too bad until the last 20 minutes it’s entirely incline. You can rent horses to and from the mountain (they will take you MOST of the way - you have to walk the incline). Make sure to dress for the weather! The tour guide was very helpful and patient. Breakfast & lunch are included! Would recommend this tour just to say you’ve climbed 5000 meters above sea level!!

Outstanding tour. We visited on a beautiful day in October. The weather cooperated and we had great views of the mountains.

Temperatures were in the high 60s at the breakfast restaurant and it was around 32 at the top. It snowed ever so slightly at the peak. Makes sure to bring warm clothing and a wind/rain jacket.

Our guide, Carlos, was awesome. Knowledgeable, personable and always making sure everyone was doing ok and kept us from getting overextended. The elevation will affect you more than you expect but if you take a slow and steady pace it is fine.

Food at breakfast and lunch were great. Included local items and offered vegetarian options for both. We took the 7 am departure time which put us on the mountain going up when everyone was coming down. This meant fewer at the top when we were there. Make sure to bring money as you need to pay for your entry into the site and for food/drinks from the locals on your way up.

Drive back is broken up by lunch and we got back around 6pm. Would recommend.

It is a big climb. If you have never done it before, take the easy way out and rent the horse for a few soles. It takes you more than 1/2 way up. You still get the holly crap climb experience with the part that's left. We highly recommend the muna tea being sold during the climb. Our guides where amazing. Very professional! One of our guests didn't feel she could make it and they made sure she did. With motivation and oxygen, she did what she believed was impossible for her.

Rainbow mountain is about as high up as you can hike in the Cusco area. 5000+ meters. If you can do this day trip, feel confident that you can do either the Machu Picchu or Salkantay multi day treks. I am 63. I did both over 8 days. The nice thing is that the local indigenous community who hosts you on their land for Rainbow mountain have horses and ATV’s available to bail you out if the altitude or steepness get to you. They also sell woolen hats and gloves for less than you will pay in Cusco.
If you are only in Cusco for a couple of days, this is definitely the day trip to choose - preferably after a night’s sleep at altitude, though.
Note the number of young, fit people who didn’t last 5 minutes once we got back into the van for the drive back to Cusco;)

This is my second tour with Alpaca so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. My tour guide Pamela along with driver David and chef Wilbert made a great team. Pamela is knowledgeable and very attentive to my needs. I wasn’t feeling well after getting down from the mountain and she offered all kinds of help until I felt better. The route with red valley is pretty much Alpaca exclusive and it’s even better than rainbow mountain in ny opinion as there’s no crowds of tourists.
I also learned a lot from conversation with Pamela about Alpaca company. They are among the few local companies that hires female guides for Inca trail tour and the only one hiring female porters. They also promote porters to chef or even tour guide. They let new guides to start as assistant and then leading smaller groups, even though it’s not the most economic way for themselves, and ultimately leading bigger groups. A true example of empowering women!
        Absolutely recommend them!

Our guides and driver; Carlos, Brian, and Sergio, were fantastic. The hike was ~ 4 miles out and back to Rainbow Mountain, or ~5 miles if you choose to do Red Valley. In my opinion, Red Valley was far more breathtaking than Rainbow Mountain and there was far less foot traffic / tourists. The drive out and back was ~2.5 hours both ways with the last hour out and first hour back through some pretty rocky high mountain terrain. Breakfast and lunch were both served at a buffet style location at the last city before departing up the mountain (for breakfast) and first city when coming down the mountain. I highly recommend this trip for anyone passing through Cusco.

I had a TERRIBLE experience and I honestly wish I'd booked this tour with another [more professional] operator.

        1. I was promised a tour guide who spoke english. However, the tour guide that day [his name was Puma] spoke very little english. While he could string together english sentences in conversation, when it came to complex explanations about Rainbow Mountain, he was not able to translate in English at all. This was highly unfair for me and a few others that did not understand a word of Spanish.

        2. He did not let me go all the way to the highest point, just because I was the last to get there, in the group. Now I would understand, if we were getting really really late all because of me, or if I had already spent 45 minutes at the 2nd highest point, but that was not the case. I got to the 2nd highest point, barely spent 10 minutes and this crazy hailstorm started. So obviously I wanted to wait till it ended [took about 5 minutes], to climb to the top. It was just bad timing for me. Once it cleared, and I started to make my way up, this guy gave me so much grief about being 'the last one' and how we were all getting late because of me etc etc. He took me on a total guilt trip and refused to let me hike to the top.
Obviously, it was awkward then, so then I didn't go to the top [would have barely taken me 15 min more]. When I got back to the Van, and told the rest of the group about what happened, they were really shocked and said it was ridiculous that he didn't let me go to the top.
Do you know what time we got back to Cusco? 3:00pm. And this was at a very easy pace. So clearly, we weren't getting late because literally every other tour group that left even earlier than we did, got back to Cusco, not before 4:30pm.

I flew all the way from the US, it took me 3 flights over 2 days to get to Cusco, and then a 3 hour bus ride and a 1.5 hour hike after that, to get to the base of that highest point. Imagine how frustrating it was for me that I didn't get to go to THE epic point which has the best views of this place? I don't know when I am going to get a chance to go back to Peru or do this hike again, and this was a complete waste of my money and time.

We were sceptical of the pictures we saw on the internet, but with good weather on the day of our trip, the bands of the rainbow mountain really were brightly colourful, and the view with your own two eyes were more stunning than any picture we took. Transport takes you to a parking lot around 4km from the viewing spot, but at 4800m+ the short hike could take up to 2 hours for those not used to the altitude. For experienced hikers it can take under an hour. There is one main route used for getting there and back, but some hikers go by the longer old route which takes 3 hours on the way up. The long line of picture-takers at the view point meant social distancing wasn't realistic to enforce, and many took off their masks as it made the thin air harder to bear.
