About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- NivesS470 contributionsManu Jungle, 3 day tripWe had a fantastic time with Jack and his team in the jungle! They did their best to give us an unforgettable adventure and we really had a great time. Thank you for taking us!Written September 3, 2024
- drambo950 contributionsOne day Inca Trail to Machu PicchuWe used Andean Great Treks for the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (1 day). First Andean Great Treks was amazing, I did so much research for the Short Inca Trail (1 and 2 day) from various outfitters and Andean seemed to be the most reasonable and provided many extra’s that the others didn’t (namely a porter to carry your lunch / bottle of water and the return ticket on the Vistadome train). I found some reviews, but still was unsure. Luckily, they were Amazing! From the minute I did the checkin with Elmer to the whole day on the trail, my family was amazed at the level of service we received and the thoroughness of how organized they were for the whole tour along with answering any questions we had. In short if you are looking to do the Inca trail and are reading this review, just stop looking and book with this company, you will get amazing service and more than other operators are offering. ! More details of our trip, our guide was Geraldo and our porter was Alex. Geraldo was extremely knowledgeable about Machu Picchu, the Inca trail, along with the history and area (wildlife, traditions etc). He was very patient and just a really genuine good person). Alex was also very kind and took up an amazing box lunch and water for our family. We started the hike on the first train (which I would recommend as you have more time to spend on the trail and take pictures at top of Machu Picchu, but more importantly you get further up the trail before the heat really intensifies. (Geraldo confirmed it gets very hot). After the hike to oversee Machu Picchu we got to tour inside the actual ruins. From there we had dinner with Geraldo and took the train back to Ollantaytambo, with a driver waiting for us to give us a ride to Cusco. What we did learn about Andean Great Treks is Elmer used to be a guide and started this company, thus he really knows the ins and outs of what makes a great experience (which is not the case for every operator). Secondly Geraldo said he really enjoys working for Andean and fills it is a great company which I also really appreciate. Tidbits: We stayed the night before in Ollantaytambo so that we could wake up 2 hours later and catch the train instead of Cusco (you have to get up super early if you are in Cusco). The 1 day Inca Short Trek was amazing, and it was nice to be able to see inside Machu Picchu when it was sunny (morning is usually overcast), I would recommend that, but the town of Aquas Calientes is really cool, thus the 2 day would also be really cool (just know that you will go back up to Machu Picchu in the morning of the second day when 80% of the tourists are there. If you want to still stay the night in Aquas Calientes (I really recommend) Maybe work out something with Elmer to see if they can book your return ticket on train and taxi the following day. I fully recommend Andean Great Treks and feel you will be more than ecstatic working with them.Written July 6, 2024

- ancampbe0 contributionsInca Express 1 day to Machu PicchuTo start, the one day express trek to Machu Picchu is some of the most excitement and activity that my wife and I have ever packed into a day. We were very impressed by this entire operation. Elmer has everything from start to finish fine tuned. Every single transfer and detail was figured out and transitioned nicely so that all you have to worry about is enjoying the Inca Trail and taking in Machu Picchu. There were other groups on the same hike with a lot of people that did not have nearly the same intimate experience as we did. They try to keep the groups between 2-4 people to maximize the experience for the hikers and personalize the pace of the hike which we were incredibly grateful for. Our guide, Gilber, had such a great attitude, was a wealth of knowledge, and had answers for every question we had along the way. I think the one thing that I didn’t find in other reviews and didn’t fully understand prior to booking was how the fee structure is broken up for this trip. I initially had sticker shock, but after seeing what goes into the entire experience, you wonder how they can do it so cheaply. As a breakdown - The AGT team picks you up from your hotel in the morning and drives you ~1.5 hours to the train. The train tickets are around $60 depending on when you go. The permit to hike on the Inca trail is only sold to guide companies but from just doing some quick googling, they’re around $80. The ticket to enter Machu Picchu is $45. Then you add in the porter that brings your delicious lunch to the halfway point, a full time guide, a very nice dinner in one of the most expensive towns in Peru, a bus ride back Cusco, and personal taxi back to your hotel you realize that it is worth every penny (or soles)! It is an early start and late finish, but I would recommend it to anyone. Buy the ticket, take the ride!Written December 24, 2023

Our guide, Esaú, was amazing and we can’t thank him smoggy for getting us to know his land. - Jonathan J0 contributions1 Day Inca Trail Express - great experienceWe (couple, 26M 25F) did the 1 day Inca Trail express which is a 12km hike starting from Chachabamba all the way to Machu Picchu. Andean Great Treks removed any stress from the activity. We got clear instructions for every step of the way. They provided us with a delicious and fresh lunch and snacks. This included fresh fruits, chocolate, quinoa bar, quinoa and chicken meal, salad and 1L of water. We also brought our own snacks which were not necessary in the end. We brought our own water in addition and we recommend you do the same (or Gatorade). Our guide Gilber was super knowledgeable and encouraging. We felt in safe hands the whole way. He kept us going at the right pace and kept us motivated and never pushing too hard. He provided us with great insight at every site we visited. I would book with them again in the future.Written September 15, 2023
- X3100JQmarief0 contributionsClassic Inca hikeThis tour was top notch. Starting with the people in the office who helped us organize the tour. We had the best tour guide Javier, he was very knowledgeable and helpful. The porters did an amazing job, and our chef Chino cooked the most delicious Andean dishes for us. We felt like royalty and appreciate everyone who helped make this trip so special for us.Written July 6, 2023
- katrinr170 contributionsUnforgettable Experience / Inca Trail (4 days)We (2 friends) had booked the 4-day Inca Trail from 10/8/2022 to 10/11/2022. We were already planning the trip in 2019 and had already made a deposit. Due to the pandemic we could finally do the trip in 2022. Elmer, Boss of Andean Great Treks, still allowed the deposit to be valid in 2022. The communication with Elmer regarding booking, organization, arrival, process was excellent. He answered all questions often a few hours later. In Cusco we visited him in the office to settle the last questions. Our tour guide, Javier, was great. His extensive knowledge of flora and fauna as well as the history of Peru is remarkable. His English is very good and he has a great sense of humor. Javier and the porter team made our trail an unforgettable experience. We would book the trip again every time with this organization. Our special thanks to the great team that was with us on the trail: Chino, Gregorio, Braulio, Guillermo, Epifanio, Leandro and, of course, Javier. All the best for you and thank you very much for everything.Written November 3, 2022

- V7780NSdennisd0 contributionsGreat guide (Esau) and great experienceWe had a great trip with our guide Esau. We saw a lot of wildlife due to him. He knows Manu very well and spotted a lot of animals we didn’t see. Great guide and great experience!Written September 24, 2022
- X2539YJjessicav0 contributionsGreat service and great experienceGreat service from Elmer in setting up and organising the trip - very responsive over WhatsApp and email and all my questions were answered quickly. On the day, he got us on the train, with our lunch and the Inca Rail staff made sure we got off at the 104km mark. Javier guided us on the hike to Machu Picchu and was very knowledgeable and made sure we got up in good time to do the tour of Machu Picchu on the same day. Lunch was both generous and good - 5 fruits, a chicken empanada, quinoa bowl with chicken and rice, a salad and a snack bar. I’d highly recommend Andean Great TreksWritten August 21, 2022
- ccgb160 contributionsLarge groups, guide feeding animals and cold foodWe booked online where the website advised that the group size was 2-8 people it was 14! Two of these people in the group were young children (ages 3-6 if guessing) which personally I found irresponsible of the company to accept onto the trip due to large amount of poisonous plants and animals in the jungle which these children would touch! The guide wasn’t great. He thought it was appropriate to feed monkeys and taunt them by shaking the trees they were on. This and other things were all disrespectful to the wildlife. He was a nice guy but clearly not interested in the wildlife or teaching the group any interesting information. His knowledge on certain plants was the only slight positive. Just not really the standard of guide I would expect. The food would have been ok had it not been lukewarm at best and often just cold. Cold eggs are not tasty! Also portion sizes were not very generous and any buffet style food we have the food all went quickly and people were still hungry. Sadly I wouldn’t recommend this trip for those reasons. The variety of wildlife we saw was ok but a shame the guide didnt give much information on them.Written August 3, 2022

The meeting at base was lovely and seeing the Incas .
The observation car is a novelty and you see the scenery in the normal train .
Once you get there you have the higher or middle trail .
Be mindful of choices when you get to the restaurant or souvenirs . As your guides can be in commission . Shop around

Had a great time with our tour guide Javier! He’s very knowledgeable about the Inca empire. We asked him a lot about the Machu Picchu ruins. He definitely made our day and took us to eat at a local restaurant at Aguas Caliente after our tour.
