- Angeli T0 contributionsInteresting but short-lived experienceThis tour was fun and interesting but a little rushed which is unfortunately just the design of the tour. There is so much to see around Lake Atitlan and a day trip just doesn’t allow for enough time to really experience everything. Our guides, Elena and Cindy, were very kind and knowledgeable. They were both indigenous to the area and it was great to experience their culture. Some things I would suggest if thinking about this tour: bring quetzals, and water. It was really hot when we went (March 2025) and there was a lot of uphill walking. Most places take card but there are street vendors with really good deals on souvenirs on Santiago and they accept cash only. The best part was the textile market in San Juan Del Lago and if you’re thinking of purchasing any textiles in Guatemala this is where I would suggest doing so (they take card). Overall fun experience. The shuttles were timely.Written March 12, 2025
- I6512YAedgarr0 contributionsUnforgettable day trip of life around Lake Atitlan!Maria was our amazing personal tour guide. She was so insightful about the history of the country, the language, and the culture. It was amazing listening to talk in her native tongue, yet spoke perfect English and Spanish as needed for our group. It was definitely the highlight of our tour and a must if visiting Guatemala.Written March 3, 2025
- Vorantes240 contributionsAmazing day tour of Lake Atitlan!Great 1 day tour of Lake Atitlan & some of the surrounding towns. Our tour guide, Joel and his crew made us feel welcome and really showed us the wonderful Mayan culture in Guatemala. We met some wonderful people from around the globe as well.Written March 2, 2025
- Npk920 contributionsGood day tour to Lake Atitlán from Antigua! We had a good time on our day tour to Lake Atitlan. I had to get up early for this one, the bus picked me up at 5:30 am, but it was necessary. The bus was kind of old though, we didn’t have a lot in our group so it didn’t feel cramped but had there been more people on the tour, the bus definitely would’ve been very uncomfortable and the ride was long - like almost 3 hours. We arrived in Panajachel where we met our tour guides, had breakfast (Note: you pay for at your own expense) and then we went on our way exploring. We took a boat ride throughout the lake and visited 3 lakeside towns including - San Juan Laguna, San Pedro La Laguna, and finally Santiago Atitlán where we had lunch (Note: this was also at our own expense). Afterwards, we started heading back to Panajachel and got back there by 4:30 pm. We got back on our bus to Antigua, arriving at around 7:30 pm. Thank you to our guides - Elena and Trisii for leading us throughout our day tour around Lake Atitlán. They did a great job guiding us and taking pictures for us. Overall, minus the bus being old and in need of an upgrade this was a solid day tour to Lake Atitlán and at a good price for what you get. Definitely worth looking into when you’re visiting Antigua, Guatemala. - NolanWritten March 1, 2025
- F3071RIalanm0 contributionsGreat Day-TripThis was a great last-minute outing before we left Antigua. The tour guides were prompt and knowledgeable about the history/culture of the area around Atitlan (as it seems that they both lived there). Minibus was fast and comfortable. This was the perfect way for our group to get a brief tour of San Juan, San Pedro, and Santiago!Written February 12, 2025
- Yeseniacrna0 contributionsBeautiful Lake!Absolutely beautiful, to say the least. However, I wish we had more say in choosing where to eat rather than relying on the tour guide’s decision. Breakfast was decent but not the best. Also, keep in mind that the drive from Antigua takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. The boat ride is fun but can be quite rough—I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone with back problems.Written February 8, 2025
- PaulS23910 contributionsTravels in Guatemala organised by Alicia Campos, Voyageur Tours, AntiguaDuring 2022 we started planning a trip to Guatemala in 2023 which was to include a four day tour to Atitlan and a five day tour to Flores and Livingston. We made initial suggestions about activities and sights that we wanted to include in these tours. All of the planning was done from the UK through Alicia Campos in the Antigua office. The resulting schedule met our wishes very closely. Alicia was very helpful throughout the process and responded quickly to any queries we had or any amendments we wanted to make. The transfers were handled well and the drivers were consistently professional and, importantly, safe. All the local guides were attentive and informative: the guides we had to the Mayan sites were particularly good and showed great enthusiasm for both the history and wildlife of the sites we visited. All the hotels we stayed in were of a good standard. In January 2025, I have returned to Guatemala for four weeks, mainly to volunteer at a school near Antigua but I also wanted to visit Xela for three nights in order to visit the city and the fascinating churches in nearby villages and make excursions to the Mayan/Olmec site of Takalik Abaj and the beautiful Laguna de Chicabal. Again, advance contact with Alicia ensured that all the necessary arrangements were made well in advance of my visit and they then worked perfectly. During my stays in Antigua, Alicia has helped me take day trips to climb the slopes of Volcan Pacaya and visit the late Mayan city of Iximiche. If you are looking for assistance in the planning and booking of trouble free excursions of any length in Guatemala and are going to be based in Antigua then I would recommend you consider asking Alicia! She has good local knowledge and has a record of making excellent arrangements for travel in Guatemala through her links to agencies in other parts of the country.Written February 8, 2025
- 770seungmil0 contributionsAre you sure for this?Driver arrives within the time range. Then I realized it’s not clean nice multi-family transportation. It was just collective (public) bus 16 people in the one car. My left shoulder was too tight to avoid touching the men next to me. All the windows got foggy with breaths. About an hour after up ⬆️ n the mountain, the car had to curve so many, we both had to hold the front seat 💺 not not to lean on each other. Poor me and him! I was expecting a guide from the start. It was a dream. A guide joined us 2h 30 min later the tour started. So no extra kanation in between. When we arrive at the lake Atitlan. one guide joined and start speaking Spanish (ye~~~ I picked English tour). I told him that, now there was a lady who can speak a little bit of English which I can go by.(no intention to her level of English, still make us hesitate what to ask or not). Large part of the tour is for offer to purchase. Of course they would add ‘ not mandatory, it’s optional!’ Between the villages, all must ride a boat which bumped so hard my neck disk could come back. Even English speaking lady disappeared without saying anything until the and of tour(hahahahha ) When I found her which is about to leave towards Antigua, she ignored my request seat front due to bumpy boat ride, and say bye. (vomitted in the middle of ride. In the way to antigua, the bus driver stopped the car in the gas station for 5 min(he initially said). Everyone was hungry so we bought the snack. About 30 min later he announced people who goes w to Antigua need to get off the bus and wait till the other bus arrives. Then, I check with the driver we paid for the drop off to our hotel. He agreed. New bus arrived and said we will get off at the square not individual hotel. All other tour members complained now. It took 3h 30 min for the google said 2h 30m. Dinner was too late and no one tipping. They deserved no tipping!!! Tour was in the middle of money pool they realized we don’t come back for this. The tour price $92 was extremely over priced than what you will get. Think twice. The worst tour experience we ever had!!!Written January 29, 2025
- tattooedtraveller_uk0 contributionsA good day outThis was a really well organised trip and we saw a lot. It is a very long day though as the journey to and from the lake is long, however it was worth it. The lady who was our guide was very informative and interesting. - alissasidea0 contributionsA big adventureThis tour was everything my family and I hoped for. First was a treacherous bus ride, no way around it but the bus was comfy and it was worth the trip. Take meds if you’re queasy. Then at Lago Atitlan, we ate breakfast, then boated to and from 3 additional villages. There was a guide for each family (Elena and Kevin stayed with us). They were kind, considerate, and so knowledgeable. They are locals and showed us their home in that way. We learned so much about Mayan culture and had plenty of time to show and explore. We stopped in for a textile lesson, chocolate making lesson, and then tuktuks around the fourth village. I would highly recommend the Tuktuk option in the fourth town. There was food options for even the pickiest of eaters, and we all enjoyed (ages 4-60, family of 8). This is a full day adventure! But Kevin made it so enjoyable for us and we will talk about forever.Written November 25, 2024
- S1886SVmichaelg0 contributionsPerfect Way to Visit Lake Atitlán from Antigua in a Short Trip! This day trip to Lake Atitlán was the ideal way to experience the beauty of the lake and its surroundings in a short amount of time. We visited the main points of interest around the lake, which allowed us to soak in the charm and culture of several towns in one day. My favorite part was the breathtaking views throughout the trip—they were truly unforgettable. Despite the packed itinerary, the tour was well-organized, making it easy to enjoy the highlights without feeling rushed. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone short on time but eager to see as much as possible. It’s an efficient and rewarding way to experience the magic of Lake Atitlan.Written November 24, 2024
- Dillon D0 contributionsSecond time doing this tour and still a 10/10 experience.Last year I did this tour by myself and I was blown away. I decided to come back to Guatemala again with my girlfriend and I kept telling her how I wanted to take her on this tour as it was one of my favorite parts of my trip. Although this was my second time doing the tour, it was equally as fun as last time and ended up being my girlfriend's favorite part of our trip. Elena is truly an amazing person and guide, and makes everyone feel welcome and like a friend. She is knowledgeable and takes you to many different places to learn different things and is constantly smiling while doing so. All of the places she takes you to has people who are also very knowledgeable and friendly. I can't recommend this tour enough. I couldn't think of a better way to spend my money and time. Any person I know that is taking a trip to Guatemala I will tell them that this tour is a must. Thank you for everything Elena.Written November 5, 2024
- janbN7735YC0 contributionsA great day!Our family group of 3 joined with 4 others for an incredible day with Elena, our tour guide. The boat trip to 3 different cities was unique. Climbing the hills was a bit of a challenge...but I'm OLD! Elena brought us to restaurants for breakfast and lunch. Both were good. The demonstrations at the shops were well-done and interesting, and the merchandise featured good, even though I forgot to barter! It was an amazing, educational, and fun day. Driver picked up on time but was quiet the whole way. This is not an informative tour the guide is with you but doesn’t speak much. When you ask about the volcano he shows video but doesn’t explain much nor talks about any of the history . When we arrived to the park the horse riders rush to your van. They opened the door and shoved the horses head in the van for you to choose. The app say they charge $100 Q but in May 2023 they were charging $200Q each way . They follow you up the trail yelling taxi and tell you that you won’t be able to make it up it’s to steep and air gets thin. The price goes up the further up your are. I understand the hustle but it was a little to aggressive for me . The walk itself is not for the lite hearted . It’s a hike up . The rocks are slippery there’s horse sh!$ everywhere but doable . The pizza is delicious ! Expensive but I ate delicious pizza made out of lava rocks . Overall good expensive but I would recommend getting the tour with ATV or horses already included .

As others have mentioned: the park entrance fee is likely not included in your 'booked excursion', so check closely and bring quetzales. I like to hike at a brisk walking pace, which is what our guide was doing. I could keep up with him, but I was definitely huffing and puffing a bit (not sure if altitude and/or we were on second day of trip and my legs felt a bit tired). So it took me about an hour, but a so-so conditioned person can do it in 80 minutes, with short rests here and there. It's actually quite vigorous, I recommend bringing a minimum of 24 ozs of water and wear short sleeves. I wore hiking type pants and hiking shoes. Shorts would have been ok. Sneakers would work, although they'd likely get really dirty. There is definitely quite a bit of rocky/rooty terrain.
(Our excursion included then going to 'hot springs' that were really some heated pools at a hotel, but they did feel good, it was not too over-crowded and it was an enjoyable post-hike relaxation activity)

This tour was even better than I expected. They communicated well with me via email to schedule it. The van arrived at my hotel on time. A nice surprise was that they stopped for a coffee/pastry/potty break on the way. The van ride was about an hour or so, but it gave us all time to get to know each other. There were people on the tour from all over the world - young and old, male and female. They did a great job explaining about the horses and walking sticks available at Pacaya (I recommend the walking stick). Our tour guide up the volcano was really informative. I was worried about how hard it would be, especially with the altitude, but they stopped quite a bit along the way for people to catch their breath and that was really nice. They had a snack bar along the way up the trail, one at the top, and even a lava rock gift shop with really pretty items. Roasting the marshmallows was really fun. Take layers - beanie, windbreaker, and warm jacket. I suggest water, a hat and sunscreen too. Great experience!

This whole experience felt rushed. The driver was in a rush. The guides were in a rush. We had 27 people hiking in a line with horses getting in the way because they were trying to get people to pay to ride a horse up instead of hiking! There was very little time to stop and look around the hike itself wasn’t that hard but it was honestly just OK.

The location of the hike itself was very scenic and a great spot. The exception was, you get followed by people on horses hoping you pay to ride them, for about 45 minutes, literally followed like when a driver tailgates you on the highway. It was really annoying and affected the experience, this will happen to everyone. This part of the trail is COVERED in horse crap. This hike is a poor man’s Acatenango, but good if you’re not in good enough shape to do that. Maybe find a tour that roasts marshmallows because our tour was average.
The listing/description does not prepare you at all, quite disappointing. We went with the 6am trip. There is no food, no coffee, no water, nothing available, so prepare all of this prior. Lucky we each had 1L of water and a small bag of chips to last our the whole trip (6am to 12pm). The hike is about 1.5 hours all up hill, 10 minutes at the viewing point, then 40 minutes down, and on our morning in March it was freezing and windy (most in our group were unprepared). Probably don’t do it if you’re very overweight. Would recommend proper hiking shoes or trainers with grip as it gets very sandy. Had fun on the way down as we took the quick walk way and slid down the sand. We spoke only a few words to the guide, he pretty much bolted and we only saw him on quick breaks having a cigarette, very poor English, definitely didn’t need him there but it’s mandatory.
The 3 stars is because once you’re most of the way into the trail, it’s quite beautiful, but the cost for what we got, and the preparation, was very average. 3.5/5 really, but can’t rate half stars.

I booked a bilingual tour, but it's barely bilingual. The hike's a bit disorganized imo as well, especially at the beggining. The guide never even introduced himself and just asked us to literally start walking.
Would help as well if it was clarified that they wont provide headlamps since its a sunset hike. All in all, its still enjoyable.

This isn't an easy hike. Anyone who's saying it is must be in great shape and hike frequently. If you're a beginner hiker, this will be a difficult hike. Our tour guide went up FAST power-walking up the trail and didn't wait for people. Since I was at the end of the group and would have been slower, I was worried about getting left behind and felt like I had no choice but to pay for the horse ride. That's ok because it was cool riding the horse, but would have liked to try going up at a slower pace. 1 other person in our group paid for the horse as well and a few others considered it. I paid Q100 for the horse to bring me about 75% of the way up. No one in our group bought a walking stick and it seemed like no one needed it. I bought a flashlight for this hike since the instructions said you needed it for the afternoon tour, but I never used it because it was still mostly light out when we finished. I was picked up a little before 2 and we got back into Antigua around 7pm - 5 hours in total.

Overall, this was a great experience and my friends and I are very happy to have booked it. I would book this hike again! The hike itself is amazing and the views are gorgeous. Wear good shoes! Bring a friend.
I was feeling very confident reading so many reviews saying the hike isn’t difficult, but I ended up needing a horse. The hike is a bit difficult and the path is very steep. I would say this is a medium difficulty hike. I think the beginning is the hardest part. I am a fat woman who is comfortable hiking, going on long walks, and doing many physical activities. I am used to going on hikes, but it was still a bit difficult for me because the terrain is quite rough. The walk up is about 45 mins to an hour, and 30 to 45 on the way down.
The driver Carlos was excellent at handling the tight streets in Antigua and the winding roads up in the mountain. The guide Ervin was very nice and always made time to stop and catch our breath.
When you first start the hike, the horse guides crowd the group and follow you for the first 10 mins. It’s quite uncomfortable to be walking in the middle of horses while they poo and fart. The horse guides are also bumping into the group. I understand that working in tourism is a hustle, but this was uncomfortable - yet it worked to get me to pay for a horse. I ended up getting a horse and it was very nice, although there are no helmets and the horses walk very close to the edge of the cliff.
It would be much more comfortable if the horse guides walked a bit behind to avoid crowding the path and stepping on horse poo.
It seems like the horse guides choose the price on the spot. It was 300 Q for going up and down, and 200 for just one way. I didn’t have any cash on me, so the driver stopped at an ATM on the way back so I could pay the horse guide.

Truly incredible! The hike up is fairly strenuous - climbing on a sandy path and the top was windy - but absolutely worth it. Beautiful views the entire way and then experiencing being inside of an active volcano was a once in a lifetime memory. We did the hike as a family, my mom and 5 year old son were able to do it. My dad opted for horseback. My son thought roasting marshmallows in the hot volcanic oven was worth every step up the mountain!
Driver picked up exactly on time, and the hiking guide was fun and knowledgeable.

The walk is really something impressive that one never expects, grateful to the driver and the guide who were very kind to us, it is somewhat tiring but it is worth it! the view is beautiful. I'm looking forward to visiting them again...

I took the morning tour and we were back at 11:30! We did another activity in Antigua at 2:30pm and had plenty of time. I asked before we went and they said they are usually back by 12:30pm

I saw one traveller brought their baby for this hiking. I am amazed actually with the baby´s strength. I think it depends how fit and great stamina of their parents to take the baby in this hike.

Hi, I am interested in arranging a hike to Pacaya for a group of 9 on Dec 27. We have two kids ages 8 and 10 and a few others who may want to go by horse. How would I arrange this? thanks, Karen
