Begin your walking tour at the mermaid fountain in Antigua’s main plaza. Check out the historic buildings that frame the central square: the Ayuntamiento, or City Hall, and the Captain General Palace, both known for their many arches. You’ll see the impressive ruins of the city’s main cathedral, affected by a series of powerful earthquakes like many of the other historic buildings in Antigua.
Next you’ll visit the San Francisco Church, parts of which date back to the 16th century. This church holds the tomb of Brother Peter, Guatemala’s first saint. Continue on to the elegant grounds of Santo Domingo, a one-time monastery turned luxury hotel and restaurant.
End your tour at a local jade factory, where you’ll learn about the history of this precious stone and its significance in Mayan culture. Your trip concludes back in Antigua’s central square.
