    Iximche
Stop: 4 hours - Admission excluded
Discover the history of the ancient Mayan Civilization of Iximche. The site was ruled by the Kaqchikel from the 12th - 15th century. At the time of the Spanish conquest, Iximche was the second most important city in the Guatemalan Highlands, after the K'iche' capital at Q'umarkaj. The architecture of the site includes four Ceremonial Plazas surrounded by temples, structures up to 10m high and two ball courts. There's also a small Museum displaying sculptures and ceramics found at Iximche during the excavations (CLOSED ON MONDAY). This site is considered to be the first capital of Guatemala (founded by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado). Our van will pick you up at your hotel between 7:20 am through 7:40 am. Our estimated time of arrival is around 9:00am, where our bilingual local guide will meet you to start the tour. He will begin by giving a general information of the site, and for this he will take you to the small museum, located at the entrance. From this point on, you will start to understand and learn how the Maya´s lived, and protected them from their enemies. Each plaza has its unique story, and each plaza gives you a glance on how their society was structured. The tour will be over around 11am in Antigua.

    Neat day trip!
Neat trip and hike on the volcano. We were picked up exactly on time, our guide spoke great English and was very informative about the volcano. Roasting marshmallows on a volcano was a unique experience!

    Terrific!
The hike to the volcano was one of the phenomenal experiences, they picked me up on time, the trip was comfortable, when I arrived we started the hike they gave us a warm welcome, I enjoyed the way, beautiful views to take photos, we roasted marshmallows on the hot spots and made pizza among the rocks, thanks to Alicia who was the girl who kindly assisted me in the office, I highly recommend them!

    Great hike with convenient transportation!
Great hike and views! The uphill was shorter than anticipated (about 1hr 20min total up) and the downhill was less steep and full of cool views of the lava fields and surrounding mountain sides. Note there is no flowing lava at this time (Sept 2023). Also note there are people trying to sell horse rides and they will hike next to you the whole way up. If you stay towards the front of the group, it is less crowded and more enjoyable (unless you want to walk next to or behind horses). This pickup from downtown Antigua and drop off was also very easy. They had comfortable busses and picked up and dropped off every member of the tour from their hotels/airbnbs. Don’t forget Quetzals to tip the tour guide(s) and bus driver. Overall highly recommend and would do again!

    Beautiful views and unique experience!
Amazing experience! Shuttle picked us up right on time at 6am and we made it out to the trail head in about an hour. The hike itself is not too difficult, and our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Beautiful views on the way up for photo opportunities, and roasting marshmallows and eating pizza made over the volcanic rocks at the top was a great way to cap it off. The whole thing takes about 2 hours up and down and you’re back in Antigua by around 12pm. Highly recommended!

Nice lake but wouldn’t do the tour again
The trip was ok- the lake was pretty but more time was spent shopping at the villages. All of the souvenirs and stuff are the same as you would see elsewhere. They stopped for breakfast and lunch at sit down restaurants and if you weren’t eating you just had to sit there and that felt like a waste of time. There was also the expectation that everyone do the tuktuk and if one person didn’t go, the whole group didn’t go. The tour was not in Spanish, but English

Don't attempt if your not sure you'll be able to complete.
I had trouble keeping up with the group, due to my breathing so I was asked to go back, however I was completely abandoned and had to walk down alone in the pouring rain There was 2 young boys with horses that started to go down with me , but when I didn't want a ride and didn't want to pay $60 , they hopped on their horses and left me an I was completely alone in the middle of no where in the pouring rain , scared and alone. When I got to the bottom of the trial there was noone in sight, 2 police men then left about 30 minutes later. An 2 men in a little building/shack with a bathroom, I sat outside in the rain alone for a couple hours before one of the men said I could wait in the building .. when the group got back the tour guide had the nerve to ask for a tip.... For me it was an awful experience strictly for being left alone in the middle of no where in the pouring rain in the Guatemalan mountains... Not to be rude but anything could have happened to me , whether it be animals, or running into someone dangerous... I shouldn't have been left alone

    Well worthwhile, a great day!
It was a really great experience and something well worth doing! Our guide was truly great. The only problem that we had was that the driver getting there from Antigua took a very curious route through the mountains and drove very fast. That part wasn’t a pleasant experience. The actual tour was amazing. The ride back was great with a really good driver who took a really safe route and drove very safely. All in all this was a very good trip and I would do it again.

    Experience Pacaya If You Can!
Super outing! This a great short hike with amazing views. We booked through trip advisor, everything was on time and well communicated and we had a great time. The views were really stunning and you could see the recent lava flows. They cook pizza and roast marshmallows on the hot steam rising from the earth which was pretty fun. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable making for an all around great way to experience the wondrous environment of Antigua.

    Such a complete tour!
They picked me up on time right at the hotel. The tour was really nice but keep in mind you spend about 6 hours round trip in the bus since it's kinda far from Antigua. I went alone and felt safe such a nice group, guide was friendly and explained everything he could

    Worth the money
About 4 to 5K (2.5 to 3 miles) of total hiking; pretty steep but at a reasonable pace. Horses available for 200 to 300 quetzales. Cost includes transport to and from Antigua to Pacaya National Park; does not include 100 quetzales entry fee. Fantastic views. Lots of stray dogs keep you company during the hike.

I can’t say enough about the personal service on this trip. I was picked up at my Spanish school within the timeframe indicated. The driver let me sit up front, and he chatted with me the entire way, so I got to practice my Spanish. And, the tour guide onsite was Mayan and therefore gave a lot of historical info I might not have received.

First let me say that the tour guide was excellent, the pick up was on time and as expected and this tour is a great way to wile away a couple of hours.

However on arrival to the site, as a foreigner (the others were a Guatemalan family), I had to pay an extra 50 quetzals to gain entrance. Nowhere was this mentioned in my booking confirmation. I had (obviously) assumed that the price of the tour included entrance to the main attraction. The tour also says it includes a complimentary bottle of water and a snack. This was nowhere to be seen.

Finally, whilst the Guatemalan family I was with were very lovely, only the mother spoke any English. So this required our guide to do the tour in a combination of both languages. Fortunately he was brilliant at doing that.

Hi Rebecca, we are so sorry for the inconvenience. Although we do have on the tour description what is included and what is not. It is clearly stated that drink and food is not included, and it also says that the entrance fee should be paid by the customer. Please check your ticket issued by trip advisor. If you require more assistance, please feel free to write us at info@cometoguatemala.com
