Discover the history of the ancient Mayan Civilization of Iximche. The site was ruled by the Kaqchikel from the 12th - 15th century. At the time of the Spanish conquest, Iximche was the second most important city in the Guatemalan Highlands, after the K'iche' capital at Q'umarkaj. The architecture of the site includes four Ceremonial Plazas surrounded by temples, structures up to 10m high and two ball courts. There's also a small Museum displaying sculptures and ceramics found at Iximche during the excavations (CLOSED ON MONDAY). This site is considered to be the first capital of Guatemala (founded by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado). Our van will pick you up at your hotel between 7:20 am through 7:40 am. Our estimated time of arrival is around 9:00am, where our bilingual local guide will meet you to start the tour. He will begin by giving a general information of the site, and for this he will take you to the small museum, located at the entrance. From this point on, you will start to understand and learn how the Maya´s lived, and protected them from their enemies. Each plaza has its unique story, and each plaza gives you a glance on how their society was structured. The tour will be over around 11am in Antigua.

Worth it Despite the Bumpy Ride
The Lake Atitlan One Day Tour was one of the best experiences of my life. Please note that if you have ANY motion sickness, I highly suggest taking a motion sickness medicine before you go or reconsider going at all. Even after taking the medicine, the roads to get to Lake Atitlan were brutal and the turbulence while on the boat was not fun. Despite those things, I had a wonderful time. Our tour guide was able to multitask by giving the tour to those who speak Spanish while also giving a tour to those who speak English. She was very knowledgeable of the area, as she is a local of a surrounding city. While you can definitely tell that the tour is a means to get you to spend money and support the local businesses, I never felt pressured to spend any money if I did not want to. We explored so many different areas and truly got to see what these peoples lives are like every single day. Lake Atitlan is a beautiful place with an amazing history and culture. I recommend taking this tour.

For those worried about the hike
I was nervous about booking this tour because I am not a hiker and I couldn't tell what to expect from the reviews. For context, I have been doing CrossFit for a year and a half but before that, I had not done much physical activity. I consider myself to be a relatively fit person now that I work out at least 5 days a week. The hike was hard. My heart rate remained at what it usually is when I'm in the middle of an intense workout. I had to stop a few times to get my breath in control. There are a few breaks here and there that were perfectly timed but towards the end, I had to take a few more. The guide was kind and waited for those of us that needed to take a break. There were others that seemed to have no issue and were going at the guide's pace. What made the trip a little more challenging is you have men with horses trying to get you to get on the horse on the way up. Later on, I was able to get ahead of them enough so it wasn't as tempting and bothersome. Towards the end, they finally left when they saw we were not going to get on a horse. All this to say that if you are worried about pace and you can book a private tour, do it. I would have enjoyed that more but I thought you needed 2 people minimum to do so. I was told by the guide that you can book for just one person. If you have to book with a group, you will still enjoy it especially if you know all of this ahead of time. The views were amazing even though we are in rainy season. I wasn't expecting to have such beautiful views. I also met amazing people. The guide was super friendly.

Amazing experience, great view of the volcano
It was a incredible experience, something you got to do once in a lifetime, this only downside was the bus to go was crowded and took almost two hours and on top of what you paid already you got to pay the entry fee and they are fast and it's uphill so if you decide to walk the 3km up know that you won't be able to take break and might have to pay for a horse , witch I end up doing and it was amazing 🤩

The guide was so knowledgeable and gave us a unique experience that I will always remember. I definitely wish I started with this tour as the first thing I did when I landed. Highly recommend!

      Hike to Pacaya
Excellent trip! The tour guides were great and very knowledgeable. Tour guides were able to communicate in English and Spanish and assisted greatly in helping those who were unable to hike get up the volcano all the same

      Steep, short, worth it!
Steep, but short hike. We were up and back down in 2.5 hrs, including roasting marshmallows at the top. Beautiful view from top, and amazing lava field. Tennis shoes were sufficient, but boots are better. Each hiker should have a bottle of water. One in our party rode a horse instead, and was pleased with that decision. Horse and hikers took same trail at same pace. “Monkey” was our guide and he was great!

      Overall great hike!
The pick up from the hotel was prompt. Monkey, our tour guide, was very informative on local plants and insects. The dogs that followed us on the trail were an added bonus! If you do the afternoon tour and want pizza, you do need to request in advance.

      Hiking a volcano, surreal
Our guide seemed to have one speed, fast. He did stop whenever we needed. They offered horse ride if you changed your mind. It seemed like they pressed getting a horse because we needed several breaks (back to the guide walking so fast). After a while they left us alone about the horses and the hike was more tolerable. It ended up being cloudy at the top so we couldn’t see much until on the way down. However, the views on the way up and down were amazing. I’d do it again

      Super tour!
Elena did an amazing job showing us her hometown and other villages by the Lake Atitlan! She’s very friendly, knows a lot of history and speaks perfect English. We took three boat rides, saw three towns and had two meals- each experience was wonderful, we also a stopped at the Cacao shop and local textile factory. 8 hours plus 4h driving but what a day! Worth every penny!

      See the Beauty of Guatemala
Must do tour. The lake itself is astonishing. The towns we visited across the lake each have their own character. The logistics and itinerary were well put together. Highly recommend.

Nice experience but more difficult than I expected
Very interesting experience but more strenuous than I expected. I'm reasonably fit but, like several others, I had to rent a horse part way up. Even though it was pretty clouded at the top it was still worthwhile.

Excellent tour of an incredible site. A privilege to hear and learn this history from a knowledge holder among the standing remains of the city of Iximche.

I can’t say enough about the personal service on this trip. I was picked up at my Spanish school within the timeframe indicated. The driver let me sit up front, and he chatted with me the entire way, so I got to practice my Spanish. And, the tour guide onsite was Mayan and therefore gave a lot of historical info I might not have received.

First let me say that the tour guide was excellent, the pick up was on time and as expected and this tour is a great way to wile away a couple of hours.

However on arrival to the site, as a foreigner (the others were a Guatemalan family), I had to pay an extra 50 quetzals to gain entrance. Nowhere was this mentioned in my booking confirmation. I had (obviously) assumed that the price of the tour included entrance to the main attraction. The tour also says it includes a complimentary bottle of water and a snack. This was nowhere to be seen.

Finally, whilst the Guatemalan family I was with were very lovely, only the mother spoke any English. So this required our guide to do the tour in a combination of both languages. Fortunately he was brilliant at doing that.

Hi Rebecca, we are so sorry for the inconvenience. Although we do have on the tour description what is included and what is not. It is clearly stated that drink and food is not included, and it also says that the entrance fee should be paid by the customer. Please check your ticket issued by trip advisor. If you require more assistance, please feel free to write us at info@cometoguatemala.com
