About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Ranternational0 contributionsA tour not to be missedOur tour guide Eric was very knowledgeable on the history and culture and he seemed to have no problem speaking three languages. The people of Palenque were very warm. I be willing to would go back on the tour for the food alone!Written December 18, 2023
- johnny s0 contributionsBlack history at its finest!Beat up, hot town with incredible history a long hour from Cartagena. The first runaway slave settlement in all the Americas. Part of Colombian mythology and music. Cute and really simple museum in the middle of town. If i returned, i would contact some of the guides to know when a musical or dance rehearsal was on. Our cabbie Walter 57-310-702 7112 had the guides phone number in Cartagena.Written February 7, 2023
- ellid20230 contributionsVisit two Countries in one dayThe trip to Palenque was a special experience. Hard to imagine that you are in Africa even though you are in Colombia. But this is Palenque, a historic village with a touching history. The tour was well organized and all guides were extremely friendly. I was even introduced to boxing here. Strengthened with a delicious lunch and with many new impressions of the diversity of Colombia, we started our way home. I highly recommend this cultural experience!Written January 19, 2023

They open up pre-Columbian culture up to the modern day. Tour their art then do some weaving in the local community. Greet, authentic, memorable tourWritten August 22, 2022
- annmarig20190 contributionsPRIVATE tour to Palenque -Cruise Ship travellerWe,5 adults, arrived in Columbia on the Emerald Princess Cruise Ship.We visted Columbia on a previous cruise and had done sightseeing of the sites and beaches in the city so we wanted to have a different experience this time. Before our departure we had booked a private tour to visit San Basilio de Palenque with Donald who was given excellent reviews online. This village is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. We comminicated with him via Whatsapp +573017051167 and after we agreed on the contents of the Tour and the price, we made all the arrangements to meet when the Princess docked. Donald met us in the gas station outside the port and our fantastic tour began there. The journey to Palenque was approximately 45 minutes drive from the port and Donald kept us well informed about not only the places of interest along the way and went into detail about what to expect in Palenque. His immense knowledge of the island, and his charming personality and the fact that he spoke English and Spanish fluently, added to the experience. Palenque was an awesome experience. We were taken to homes of prominent members of the village, were treated to live entertainment by the local music ensamble, we interacted with members of the community and had the priviledge of being escorted through the village by a local tour guide. A wonderful experience. Thank you DonaldWritten January 11, 2020
- capet0020 contributionsTour with bigger purposeThis was a fabulous tour. It covers some history as well as learning about the market and the people who sell there. It included much more than just the food. We tasted some Colombian cuisine for lunch, had a few beverages and even got to hear and see some of the more unique vendors. Our two guides included a Spanish speaker from Cartegena and a guide who translated into English who is from Bogota. Well worth the three hours!!(Check FEM’s website for their mission, etc.)Written July 17, 2019
- ReggieRadcliffe0 contributionsExcellent TourI did the market tour. It is excellent. The only things I would point out is that is relatively relaxed, so if you are in a hurry it is not for you. Also all the things you are offered on the tour are free. When you stop somewhere they are not trying to sell you something. IT REALLY IS ALL FREE. And at the end the guides not ask for a tip. There is nothing to pay extra when you take the tour, but you walk away with a number of gifts. It is a really good tour. Relaxed, low pressure, interesting, and about 3 hours. Enjoy it.Written January 12, 2019
- BILLIONAIRE240 contributionsIf you are reading this BOOK THE TOUR! A MUST DO. Professional Company and the host Paula (POW-LA) is amazing! When I came across this tour. I did some research on the town and noticed there was a festival the weekend I wanted to book. I didn't want to do the standard tour because I knew the festival would be an all day event that I wanted to be a part of and the standard tour didn't accommodate that. So I reached out to the company via email and received an immediate response. I asked if they could customize a tour for me. That would accommodate the festival activities. They advised they would have to check and get back to me. They responded the next day advising it wouldn't be an issue to do a private tour to attend the festival. So I immediately booked with them. The communication was great and well detailed. They arrived at our hotel on time for pick-up. Our guide was POOOW-LA (Paula) inside joke. She says her name with a strong accent and I didn't realize she was saying Paula. But I looked like a fool but it was funny none the less. Delphi who was a local from San Basilio also joined us for the ride. Along with other team members from the company. Along the way Paula filled us in on some history of the area and town and translated for us with Delphi. With any questions we had during the ride. It was about an hour and half ride to the town. I have to say Paula is so professional and truly made this trip amazing. Along with the other team members that joined the private tour as well. We arrive to the town at noon and you immediately feel the lively energy from the festival. We walk to a local home/restaurant for lunch. Was so happy we ate first because we were starving. They served amazing fried fish with rice and veggies. Served on a huge leaf and a piece of coconut shell carved like a tiny spoon. To use while eating. Everything was so natural and fresh. The food was absolutely amazing. After eating they let us go into the home and backyard to see how the food was prepared. Once done. One of the locals that conducts the tour of the area arrived to begin our tour and show us the amazing town. So much knowledge and information provided about the culture. We walked through the streets meeting locals along the way. Stopping at homes and meeting some of the influential people of the town. As you walk through the town and listen to the history there. You can get to see and experience the local way of living and culture. The guide even provided us with some great locally made alcohol to enjoy while on the tour. Had a very similar taste to moon shine but not as strong. After the tour of the town. Delphi took us to her home to meet her mom, sister and other family members. We sat on there porch for about 30 minutes talking and just taking it all in. I promise you no other tour had this personable experience. Her family was so welcoming. After that we did some shopping from the local vendors. Then we went to the main stage area of the festival to watch some of the performances. We got to take pictures with a lot of the local performers. Who were dressed up in costumes and looked amazing. We were truly treated like VIPs the entire day. After that we grabbed some chairs and sat along the street and just listened to the amazing music and people watched. The vibe there was so amazing. People dancing in the streets and just having a great time. We got to enjoy some of their local beer from the towns small liquor store. After relaxing there we went back to the stage area and danced the night away! Words can't even describe the feeling we got from this trip and how amazing Cartagena Insider staff were. They never rushed us not once and basically let us enjoy the entire festival at our leisure. Before we knew it. It was 9pm and we had been there since 12 noon. We literally lost track of time and honestly never even checked until we started to get tired from all the dancing. Once we were ready to leave we let them know and we all walked back to the van to depart home. Paula was truly amazing and so professional. You can tell that she loves what she does. Her energy and personality is just contagious. This trip would not have been what it was if it wasn't for her. The Cartagena staff that joined also was an added bonus. Everyone was so amazing and truly made this trip the best. This was the highlight of our time in Cartagena. Nothing else compared to it. Don't even question it just book it. Im sure it's a little slower without the festival but just the experience of the culture and the tour alone. Is absolutely amazing because you get to truly experience it as if you were a local. I truly hope Cartagena Insider knows the gem that they have, by having Paula apart of their team. I could go on and on but I will spare making this review even longer than it is lol. This trip wouldn't have been the same without her. JUST BOOK IT! You won't regret it, I promise.Written November 8, 2018

- stefanie d0 contributionsGreat cultural experienceWe wanted to visit this market but were a little nervous to do so alone. So glad we found this tour on Trip Advisor! The tour is run by FEM, a local non profit group. Paula, our sweet bilingual guide, met us at our lodging in Castillogrande and we took the bus to the market. Great to see how locals get around. We tasted new fruits, food and drinks had a wonderful experience overall. Be sure to check out some of the other tours offered by FEM!Written June 16, 2018
- bartravelIsrael0 contributionsAuthentic market tourWe visited before Cartagena and for our second trip (came with cruise ship) we wanted different kind of tour. We had private tour with 2 guides to the biggest local market. No tourist at all just us. Very cheap and interesting market with everything : they buy for us local music disk, a hand painted poster, natural herb medicine, local juices and beer and more. The best way to see the real Cartagena with a non profit organizationWritten May 24, 2018
- Amy B0 contributionsA great night! We are salsa beginners, but had so much fun learning about the history of Salsa form Anna and some salsa moves from Keeke. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to get out of the tourist center and have a local experience. We danced, we ate delicious arepas, we drank a little rum and had a memorable night. I would also add that the tour company gives back to the community and operates as a charity, so you can have fun while helping others. A win win. Next time we come to Cartagena, we will try more of their tours, they all look interesting and I am sure would be informative, fun and professional. I don't want to give away any surprises, but Anna really made an effort to be sure the group was greeted warmly and enthusiastically. Our spanish is not great, so we appreciated her excellent english as well. Thank you!!Written April 27, 2018
- Sissel B0 contributionsHighly recommendedI have visited numerous markets all over the world, but this was the first time with a guide. Highly recommended, with an engaged and very friendly guide, who lives in the neighbourhood. A special thanks to Cecilia and her "sisters" at the restaurant for their delicious food.Written April 24, 2018
- Ayeletbz0 contributionsWonderful experienceA bunch of us, family members including grandparents, took the tour with the amazing guides of FEM (3 guides). They are vey knowledgable, and taught us about the history of Salsa and music in Cartagena, explained, demonstrated, and helped us with some Salsa moves. The tour took us to Salsa clubs where the locals go for their dance and music, included transportation and water, snacks and some drinks. If you're in Cartagena, do not miss this fun, lively tour. Kudos to Keeke, and Lorena Salgado- the handsome dancers, and Anna. The best thing- part of the money goes to charity.Written January 13, 2018
- Keith H0 contributionsVery unique and interesting place to visitWe were a party of seven, including four visually impaired. Our tour guide was very informative giving lots of information about the village culture. We visited several private homes and watched a drum demonstration by the locals. We also visited a famous local singer Rafael Cassiani, he is well for his Musica Del Mundo, a unique sound from this region.Written November 29, 2017

In general Cartagena is for tourists. We did not really see the city until we took the Bazurto market tour. Sheila and Kete are local sisters who knows all about the market and the history of Cartagena. With them, we heard from local sellers, we tried juice (no stomach issues after), we learned how to dance the Champetta and we saw the locals shopping, eating, working. They knew many of the people in the market and through them and their stories we had learned a great deal about the place. The market if off Gestmani , away from the tourists' areas. It is not recommended to be there alone. With the tour, we felt safe and welcomed. This tour was the highlight of our 4 days in Cartagena.

This tour was our favorite part of the trip to Cartagena.
It showed parts of the authentic places in the city that would likely be inaccessible for people who weren't born there like she was. Plenty of touristic options are available for travelers in the area that you could get anywhere else in the Caribbean, but the tour guide for this made the entire experience - and she was superb.
We did a number of various island-hopping boat tours and probably tried every Old Town ceviche place you can imagine, but all of us kept mentioning that this was our favorite part of the trip when we got home. Strongly recommend.. - Eric, from Chicago.

This was perhaps the best of our 5 day trip in Colombia. our guide was terrific. The market is gritty, surprising, energetic, and stimulating. Along the way, we stopped and spoke to selected vendors who told us a bit about their work and products, we sampled street food, danced to local music, and had lunch. The touristy walled city area has it's charm, but it's pretty similar to most areas of cities where cruise ships stop. Look beyond to learn a lot more about this city and this country and this tour gives you such a glimpse. And the social justice aspects of this tour are powerful..

We absolutely recommend this tour for anyone interested in visiting Bazurto market. We considered exploring the market ourselves, but are very grateful we opted for the tour as it provided for a much more authentic and wholesome experience. Led by our guides, Christina and Daison, we explored all aspects of the market and met with a variety of different vendors that welcomed and engaged us a tourists. Christina and Daison did a great job showing us around, providing us with a unique perspective of the market but also allowing us the freedom to soak up our surroundings. Overall, we highly recommend this tour as it was one of the best experiences we had while visiting Cartagena!
On top of it all, after the tour concluded, we lost a cell phone in the taxi on our way home and the tour company and Daison went above and beyond to help us get it back! What tremendous customer support! We were already planning to provide a 5 star rating before this obstacle, but their support helping us retrieve the cell phone go to show how they value the customer experience.

This is a very authentic experience. As others have mentioned in their reviews, it is dirty and noisy but that is part of the experience. The variety of things to see and experiences as part of the tour (from the metal works to juice and fruit tasting to having a graffiti poster made) make this a really interesting tour. Our guide, Jesus David, was very kind and gave us a lot of information about the market, local neighbourhood and more general chats about life in Cartagena. I would recommend doing this tour if you have more than a couple of days in Cartagena and you want to see something outside of the more traditional tourist attractions.

Our tour was one of the most memorable experiences from our trip to Cartagena. We were a total of 8 people, four adults (50s) four young adults 18-20. Our tour guides Alvaro and Jesus were well informed, accommodating, and friendly. We rode the Transcaribe bus to get to the market which was a great way to experience public transportation. We learned a lot about the market, the everyday life of the people that shop there and work there and live in the area. We tried fruits and juices. We learned some musical history, had lunch in the market, and certainly smelled the smells! and are glad we did the trip.

The market tour was terrific. It was the only tour my wife and I did in Cartagena which really connected us to the people and the "real" Cartagena. This is not a typical tourist market but rather a working market where locals go everyday for needs products, produce, and other foods. The tour rose to a cream of the crop tour by the presence of our guide, Alvaro Banquez. He is a certified guide who is full of knowledge and personality. He made the tour an experience never to forget. He made sure we were immersed in Cartagena immediately by taking us there on public transport, the bus, which was safe, clean, and efficient. He navigated the market expertly, explaining things and stopping at representative vendors. He made sure we were always safe, comfortable, and entertained. He also gave us a tour of the adjacent area of Chinatown. We learned so much! He was so excellent that we engaged him for several other private tours around Cartagena including the Old City, the fort, and the mangroves in La Boquilla.
The Bazurto market tour is a must if you want to see the "real" Cartagena but if you can have Alvaro as your guide, any tour is wonderful.

If you like your tours squeaky clean and artificial, this is not for you. BUT, if you want a glimpse of how life really happens for normal people in Cartagena, spend a few hours doing this tour! This huge central market seems chaotic at first, but then you realize there are a myriad of business ecosystems, big and small, all intermixed with each other. Fascinating! My guide Dayson knew his way around, and we visited a variety of artisanal stores and workshops, both selling and also making everything from remarkable exotic to everyday products, tools and even furniture on the spot. Tried a few good snacks along the way and finished with a delicious fresh meal in the midst of all the tiny restaurants. Felt very safe the whole time, but the streets can be wet and dirty, so I would suggest wearing closed shoes versus open sandals. Otherwise, not much you need to know, take water if you like, but you can also buy beverages along the way.

Loved this tour with Alvaro of the crazy busy Bazurto market. Alvaro filled us in on the history of the market, and indeed some of the black history of Cartagena. We tasted some of the exotic fruits, went to the Barrio Chino neighborhood nearby, met some of the market denizens, and ate an excellent local market meal (thankfully in the air con section of the restaurant). This was an excellent tour and Alvaro did a fantastic job!

We booked this excursion off an arrival of a cruise ship port. The meeting place was not clear, and we were among so many taxi personnel and it was so confusing. We went inside a building to have someone that spoke English to call the tour company. We finally found two young women, very nice. But our tour leader did not speak any English and her friend spoke limited English. They did have our names on a small piece of paper, but they were late and did not hold it up when we were in the area. We think their names were Helen and Alex, not sure. No name badges representing the tour company. We did not get much out of the tour, and it was just ok. The Market is as you describe. Not for the "faint of the heart" but we did get to see how the locals survive on local goods and groceries.

We thank you for your comment. This fact gives us the opportunity to offer a better service. We are so sorry to know that you did not have a good experience with us, but every thing that happens out of the Port with Taxis, is something that we can not control. By other hand, we have to thank you for your comment about our staff, this let us to match habilities of members of our company so that this kind of situation does not happen anymore.

Hola, me gustaría saber en qué moneda es el costo.Soy de Bs.As. Argentina.
Written July 21, 2019
Incluido:
• Guía bilingüe (Inglés, Alemán, Español)
• Traslado: Hotel - Mercado Bazurto - Hotel (en autobús o
taxi)
• Visita guiada por el mercado

I would like to know if they can pick you up at the pier. How long does it take from the pier to the area of the market. How long will we spend in the market.? We are seniors in our 80s and do a lot, but we would need to stop and rest, have a soda from time to time. Do you think this is too strenuous. We would like to spend about 2 hours in the market, see the highlights and return to ship. Is this possible:
Since you are a hotel, would you recommend a tour guide or company?
How much would this cost?

We were staying in Cartagena for several days and met our guide at the Volunteer Hostel and took a local bus there and a taxi back, as was our choice. However, I think Cartagena Insider Tours by FEM can arrange for private transport or a taxi both ways. You would need to contact them directly to find out but if there is a way for them to accommodate you from the pier, I think they certainly would! I'd say the walking tour itself was about 75% standing and walking but it was at a very leisurely pace with several stops for artist/workshop demonstrations as well as beverages, snacks, and lunch. We had a fantastic lunch in the market at Cecilia's stall, took ALOT of photos, and asked ALOT of questions throughout so I think our particular tour was longer than most. I think the standard is about 3 hours so if you only have two hours, you would probably have to eliminate lunch, but check with the tour company directly to confirm. If you can allow some extra time, I highly recommend the lunch stop. The local food was fantastic and Cecilia was featured on Anthony Bourdain's show. I hope it works out for you! It's great to know you are still able to travel and explore the world in your 80s. All best and enjoy your trip!

This is a tour through the local market of Cartagena, exploring several stalls selling metal goods, posters, music, medicinal herbs and freshly killed beef and pork. It is very dirty and there is a lot of poverty apparent. The tour guide we had was excellent and the profits from the tour went towards education. My husband and I enjoy local connections and seeing local ways of life, we are traveling on our own sailboat, but this would be an eye opener for the average tourist. I think it would be an excellent educational experience for the youngsters, but it would depend on their maturity and interest. It is in sharp contrast to the tourist areas of Cartagena, and you get to interact with some local people and see day to day life. To get to the market, you walk with the guide through a typical Colombian neighborhood, which is also very interesting. You have a local lunch at the market, which is unlike what you would typically eat when traveling there, but you are are eating with all the local shoppers and stall owners.
Hopefully this helps make your decision, but the tour is worth the cost and very interesting. It just would depend on the interest levels of the youngsters. It is real life, not Disneyland.....
