Stop At: Altyn Emel National Park, Kazakhstan
Cretaceous mountains of Aktau. This is one of the most interesting and spectacular objects of tourism in the State National Natural Park “Altyn Emel”. (Alma-Ata's region)
Millions of years ago, a huge lake splashed in these places. Frequent rains and mudflows washed away the land of the surrounding mountains. Here she was deposited at the bottom with red, white, yellow clays. Over time, the lake dried up, the bottom sediments began to be washed off with water, blown away by the winds.
As a result of erosion, low mountains formed. The thickness of the lake sediments exceeds 1800 m, the water washed the hollows and deep gorges in them, and the wind helped the water transform the landscape. The formed mountains eventually became known as Aktau.
