- 528mitcht0 contributionsGreat meditative experience away from crowdsThis was a good introduction to Buddhism and zazen meditation. Our guide Yutaka was great. He took us to several Buddhist temples and gardens. We had a nice meditative experience at one of the gardens but the last temple we were guided through a Zazen with a Buddhist monk. We learned the history of the temple and what to expect and we with a small group were led into two meditation sessions. Then we stopped for a fabulous lunch afterwards.Written March 17, 2025

- hhhudak0 contributionsViator 1/2 Day Tour: Inari Shrine, Bamboo Forest and Kinkakuji TempleReview of Walking Tour of Three Iconic, Historic Sites in Kyoto Japan: March, 2025, led by Mona from Viator. In early March, we took a family trip to Japan. Our group of four was comprised of two people in their early 30’s and two people in their mid-60’s. We travelled first to the City of Kyoto as it has a long, rich history of tremendous significance to the people of Japan. Kyoto was the imperial capital for nearly a thousand years, from 794 to 1868, at which point the capital was moved to Edo (modern-day Tokyo). On our half-day guided tour of Kyoto we were joined by another family of four. The tour included visits to: Fushimi Inari Shrine: Dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, “Inari” is one the most important of several thousands of Shinto Shrines in Japan. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove at the Kinkakuji Temple. The Arashiyama area was once a retreat for Japanese nobility during the Heian period and is now an iconic symbol of Kyoto and home to the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. This dense grove features giant bamboo stalks, reaching dozens of meters in height; walking through it is a magical experience. (The Ministry of the Environment considers it a part of the soundscape of Japan!) Kinkakuji Temple: “A renowned Zen Buddhist temple with centuries of history, the Rokuonji Temple is more widely known today as Kinkakuji Temple―a name derived from the famed Golden Pavilion and Pond that serve as the centerpiece of the temple grounds. Its three-tiered pavilion covered in gold leaf is one of the most famous and recognizable of all the historic structures in Kyoto. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple is considered a must-see destination”. Our family was very impressed by the thoughtful, historic narrative about each historic site that Mona, our guide, provided. Mona kept the two different family groups together during travel on public transportation to the three different important cultural destinations we visited, and she chose a nice place to stop in between for a break for coffee, conversation and treats. Mona did a great job of prioritizing our need to see, do and learn a lot about Japan in a short period of time. Most importantly, she is very knowledgeable and provided historic and cultural context at each stop of the tour, including the navigation of transportation by public transit. Every question from the participants of our tour was answered by Mona. She provided great cultural and historic context, sensitivity, thoughtfulness and respect for the history and culture of Japan. It was clear through the content and generosity of the answers she provided to our questions that Mona is very proud of the cultural heritage of Japan and loves sharing it with travelers from all over the world.Written March 17, 2025

She detaily introduced each garden with adequate amount of history for our information. And she's also so cheerful that made the tour so enjoyable. And for the Zen meditation guided by the monk, it was also a very calming experience that I never have in other places. And finally, the vegan meal was remarkable! We had an incredible experience on the Fushimi Inari Hidden Hiking Tour with Araki (forgive my spelling if incorrect). Despite the rain, Araki remained upbeat and enthusiastic, making the entire hike enjoyable from start to finish. His positive energy was truly contagious, and we never felt like the weather dampened our experience.
One of the best parts of this tour was getting to explore the quiet side of the Fushimi Inari shrine. While most visitors were stuck in long lines on the main path (easily over 100 people waiting in the ‘instagrammable part of the path’), we had a serene and peaceful journey through the gates, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty and significance of the site. No rush or people to battle around and take photos.
Araki’s knowledge of Shinto, Japanese history, and the symbolism behind the shrines, statues, and animals was outstanding. He patiently answered all our questions, making the experience both educational and engaging. He also struck the perfect balance between storytelling and giving us time to take pictures, ensuring we didn’t feel rushed while still learning a lot.
Another highlight was the bamboo forest, which felt just as magical as the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest—but without the massive crowds. It was a hidden gem we wouldn’t have found on our own!
Araki also went the extra mile by capturing photos throughout the hike and sharing them with us afterward—a thoughtful touch that let us focus on the experience rather than our cameras.
A heads-up for future travelers: This is a hike as advertised, not just a casual walk, so come prepared with proper shoes, water, and some energy. The effort is well worth it for the unique and crowd-free perspective of Fushimi Inari.
If you're looking for a special, intimate, and enriching way to experience this iconic shrine, I can’t recommend this tour enough. Thank you, Araki, for an unforgettable adventure!

This hidden hiking tour exceeded all my expectations! From the bamboo forest, to the breathtaking views, to the expert storytelling of our tour guide Josh. Without him we wouldn’t have had as great a time as we did. He took care of us by engaging in conversation, so the hike wasn’t just some silent trek up a hill. He always checked on us during and after more tasking parts of the trail and always made sure to stop so we could catch our breath and have a sip of water. The hidden hiking tour is a great way to avoid the crowded tourist chaos of Fushimi Inari. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that wants to avoid the crowd and enjoys a little challenge. If you’re lucky you will get Josh as a guide and he will make your hike that much more enjoyable!

I really enjoyed this hike where we start by taking mountain trails to enter the Fushimi Inari area and end at the main entrance. The paths we took are very obscure (there are no signs and no designated paths in some areas) so I would have no idea where to go. If you are attempting them yourself, it is very very easy to get lost, so it is absolutely worth having a guide. Our guide, Akiko, was also very cheerful and informative and was a great host for this experience.
I loved exploring the mountains, seeing bamboo groves, visiting shrines off the beaten path, and avoiding most tourists when possible. We do eventually pass through busy parts of the shrine, but generally, it was a peaceful 3-4 person tour and I would recommend if you enjoy this type of experience. I also got to learn a lot about the shrines and the symbolism we see throughout the hike (e.g. foxes, mirrors, rice, horses, etc.), which really enriched the overall experience and appreciation for the culture. As a solo traveler, it is also a nice perk to get photos taken of yourself along the way!
Notes for those considering this experience: This is a CHALLENGING 2-3 hour hike and requires good walking shoes and packing at least 1 bottle of water per person. Akiko is super fast and skilled since she hikes frequently, but the momentum felt necessary because we had to cover a lot of ground in seemingly a short amount of time. It wasn't a rushed experience, but it did require us to try to keep up the pace if we loitered too long in an area for pictures or sight-seeing. Akiko is a sweetheart and never once rushed us and still managed to drop us back off at the entrance on time.
Another option if this hike is too challenging: If you are considering a more relaxing, leisurely experience without the crowds, you may consider going very very early (before 7AM during Sakura season) and hiking all the way to the top where there are fewer people. Most tourists do not do the full hike, so it is an option for you if you wish to take more time for photos or exploring.
Overall though, I still recommend this experience because of all the hidden gems and trivia we found throughout our adventures!

Definitely a magical experience and one we couldn’t do on our own! So nice to take a morning hike through a lush & calm area of Kyoto. It’s about 7km in 3-ish hours to go up, over and around the Fushimi Inari Shrine, starting at Tofukuji Station. We had a little rain and our kombini umbrellas doubled as walking sticks. Some areas are a little steep and agility helps but you can take your time. Our group ranged in age from mid-twenties to 60-ish. Despite the rain it was not too slippery but decent shoes are needed (no sandals). Our guide Hikari was great at keeping the group together while allowing everyone to travel at their own pace, plus she’s an excellent photographer! She taught us a great deal about the area, the shrine, both Shinto and Buddhist religions, the bamboo groves, oh and even some restaurant recommendations! Thank you, Hikari, for one of the highlights of our first trip to Japan!

Waking up this morning with an email from 6am saying it might be cancelled and then nothing with a definitive answer if it was still on or not was not a good way to start. The hike started off fine but there was nothing that said that the hike would be thru a narrow rocky path covered in slippery leaves with no where to hold on. If anyone had fallen they would have died. Ayana’s English was terrible and we could barely understand her when she spoke but most of the time she was just leading us thru the woods and pointing. When asking her a question she either didn’t understand or didn’t know the answer. The best part was being able to see the bamboo forest without all the people. Would have just liked more warning about the terrain.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet expectations, especially with the uncertainty around the hike and the challenges you faced on the trail. Safety and clear communication are top priorities for us, and we regret that there wasn’t enough clarity about the trail conditions beforehand.
We'll also work with Ayana to address the language barrier and ensure she is better equipped to guide and assist participants. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the bamboo forest, and we’ll take your feedback to improve the overall experience for future hikes.
Thank you again for bringing this to our attention!

We had an amazing time hiking around the mountains of Fushimi Inari with our guide, Matthew. He was incredibly knowledgeable and personable, making the experience feel both educational and fun. It was great to explore the lesser-known, non-touristy parts of the mountain that we wouldn’t have discovered on our own. Matthew really brought the history and natural beauty of the area to life, and the hike itself was absolutely stunning. Highly recommend this experience if you’re looking to see a different side of Fushimi Inari!

This was my second time doing this tour because I loved it so much 5 years ago and I couldn’t imagine exploring Fushimi Inari without the insight of wonderful guides like Nobu. We had a great time exploring the back ways of the shrine, learning about Japanese history and culture along the way. Nobu was a highlight of the trip sharing her genuine passion and enthusiasm about the area and even gave recommendations about where to eat after the tour - she was an absolutely brilliant tour guide and I would highly recommend booking to anyone wanting to get a more in depth understanding of such a beautiful location.

This was the best tour we took the entire time we were in Japan. Nicholas' passion and respect for the shrine, Japanese culture, and history was palpable from the beginning and contagious by the end. We learned a ton. Trekking through the back of the mountain provided us with one of the few rare moments of silence and peace that we experienced in Japan. We also had to rush to catch the Shinkansen so Nicholas kindly showed us the way out and this is when the tour reached 11 stars....the absolute insanity of tourists getting into the front gates and the front of the shrine was pure madness. As soon as we reached the entrance we both said thank god we took this tour. Both of our phones are also full of photographs that few others have. So if you want to go see the shrine, you can take a little hike (it's not physically strenuous but do bring shoes that can get muddy), and you'd love a unique experience...absolutely book this trip. 10000% worth the very reasonable price. Grazie Nicholas! In bocca al lupo per gli studi!!

We had Yukari as our guide, she was absolutely amazing! Spoke fluent English, and is a very kind gentle person! Yukari answered all of our questions and told us interesting stories about the shrine
Would definitely recommend going on this tour, one of the best experiences we had in Japan. Hopefully you will get Yukari as well and can enjoy touring with her like we did :)
