An unforgettable experience of a lifetime with Borneo Calling!
I booked this trek six months before our summit date, which happened to be my birthday. After considering various operators, I chose Borneo Calling, whose reviews indicated it is an emerging company dedicated to providing excellent services to their clients. Mei and her team were indeed responsive and helpful, guiding me through the paperwork, and payment. The anticipation and excitement finally culminated when my family of four arrived in Kota Kinabalu and was greeted by our driver, Arip. We made the two-hour drive to Pine Resort in Kundasang, with Arip stopping midway for us refill our water supplies and food at a large supermarket along the way. Checking in was a breeze, and the mountain view from Pine Resort was spectacular. The steamboat dinner had more vegetables than meat, but the broth was tasty. Mei sent WhatsApp to inform us of the pickup arrangements to the Park's Entrance the following morning. We were met by our guide, Mr. Nizam Laukang Abdullah, who made a significant difference to this arduous expedition. With over 30 years of experience in mountain climbing, he provided excellent advice and showed tremendous patience and encouragement throughout our climb and descent during the night. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to him. It is wonderful guides like Nizam that make Borneo Calling a great company to be reckoned with. Postcards are also provided free by Borneo Calling to be delivered from the Highest Post Box in Malaysia. Last but not least, I am grateful to the Mountain Torq team for celebrating my birthday in the Pendant Hut. The warm birthday song & card, complete with a delicious milo-jelly-cake made me feel so blessed. The bonds and feelings will become cherished moments. Thank you to the Borneo Calling and the Mountain Torq team for this amazing experience. Borneo Calling will be my first choice should I come back to Sabah for other activities in the future. Highly recommended!

        Amazing, rewarding experience
Amazing hike up Kinabalu. It sure is tough and we deliberated over the expense - but it is worth it for the reward at the top (and you see why it’s so expensive when the porters carry everything physically up the mountain to base camp!) Borneo Calling were great - really responsive, prompt and good communication and our guide Lawrence was great and very patient and attentive. Thanks so much!

Exceptional service of Datu, our mountain guide.
The arrangement was seamless from the very beginning, starting with my inquiry all the way through to the payment process. The pick-up time was punctual. Harris 'Datu' Gimbad, the mountain guide assigned to us, provided exceptional service. He encouraged me along the trail to keep moving forward, even when I was running on fumes. His support was instrumental in helping me reach the summit. Needless to say, the view at the top truly took my breath away. All efforts going up to the summit were all worth it.

        Incredible Mount Kinabalu Experience
I recently completed the 3D2N Mt. Kinabalu climb with the Via Ferrata Low’s Peak Circuit, and it was an unforgettable adventure! The climb itself was challenging but rewarding, and the via ferrata added an extra thrill to the experience. A special shoutout to Mei, who was incredibly friendly, responsive, and helpful throughout the trip. From answering all our questions before the climb to ensuring everything went smoothly on the mountain, she truly went above and beyond. Her enthusiasm and professionalism made the journey even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this experience for adventure seekers.

Excellent Service and Unforgettable Memories in Sabah
The tour agent provided excellent and attentive service, and the driver was very punctual. I booked the package alone, only needing to purchase my flight ticket and book a hotel. Upon arriving in Sabah, the driver picked me up from the hotel as scheduled. The assigned mountain guide was also very professional. This three-day, two-night trip left me with many wonderful memories. Highly recommended!

        10/10 service and guides!
The hike was challenging but the amazing views and journey made it all worth it! The steps were bigger than I expected (while hiking down) and because I was smaller in size, it was slightly tougher. Borneo Calling (BC) was very efficient in answering our questions on the hike before the trip and it was very well planned. BC sent over comprehensive guides and packing list to make sure we are prepared for the hike which were super helpful! Had a great experience with our awesome guides, Azizi and Sukri. They were also holding the roles of our porters up and down the mountain (super amazed how fast they can climb), and they are very friendly and also very experienced on the climb (Azizi scaled the mountain since 2011 and Sukri have done it for 8 years). I had muscle cramps during the hike to Laban Rata and both of them stayed behind to ensure I was fine before moving on with me. Thank you for guiding us and ensuring our safety through the journey! Would’ve never done it without you guys. Captured some of their photos with the nice view on the way down from the summit.

        Amazing experience
I had a wonderful time climbing Mt Kinabalu and completing the Via Ferrata! Sam was my mountain guide, he would wait when I needed a few mins rest and was super chatty throughout so we got to know each other well! I did the Via Ferrata with William and he was very instructive and made me feel confident to complete it! 10/10 experience and would do it all over again!

        1st trip to Mt. Kinabalu
The mountain guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and supportive throughout the climb. The expertise and encouragement made me and my son feel safe and confident, even during more challenging parts of the ascent. The breathtaking views from the summit were worth every step even though without sunrise view.

Amazing Mt Kinabalu with Borneo Calling.
It was amazing!!! We had so much fun. Borneo Calling could not have been more helpful, from the time of booking the tour to even beyond getting down the mountain, thank you very much Sky. It was a tough climb and descent but so worth the challenge. To get the most out of your hike you need to do steps, steps and more step training. Don’t carry much in your day bag, as the porter will carry your other bigger bag. We were very lucky with the weather, a bit of rain but not too bad. Walk the Torq was the best decision we made. Such an amazing experience. Thank you Alain, our mountain guide, for being with us every step of the way. Thank you also Handry (Mountain Torq) for reassuring us and being our “wing man”. Terima kasih / Asante sana / Thank you.

It was okay, you get what you paid for pretty much. We got picked up at 12.15pm from Sandakhan airport, get to the resort at around 3pm, the other people staying overnight could check in but we just waited around bored until 4pm. No guarantee to see anything on the cruise because it is wildlife so that was fine. We did see a hornbill, kingfisher, eagle and monkeys. After you have another hr from 6pm to kill till 7pm for an average dinner before you leave at 7.30pm. Extra star for easy booking (did via WhatsApp) and our driver drove us back to our accomodation was a big plus. An okay day if you have an extra day in Sandakhan.

We went for a 2 days 1 night trip with our own transport. We enjoyed the drive from Sandakan. The accommodation which is chalet was great and spacious. The evening cruise was the best of all as we managed to see some animals such as hornbills, prosbocis monkey and other types of monkey too as well as the rare elephants. We were so lucky to be able to see the elephants as we were told that it's rare and the chance of seeing it is low for about 4 to 5 times only a year. Not forgetting, thanks to Borneo Calling for their excellent service in booking arrangement etc. It is a highly recommended spot for sight seeing and exploration. Also, the food provided was really good too with friendly, warmth and helpful staff.

It's a 2 hour drive there on pretty ordinary roads & a 2 hour drive back for a 2 hour boat cruise. Our boat experienced engine trouble & so we sat stranded on the river for an hour. The tour operators were good about it & refunded half our money. But because we were only there for a day tour, we missed out on a lot. We only saw monkeys. Which is cool, but we were hopeful of a lot more. So if you are serious about this, stay for a day or 2 & do multiple river trips. We had hoped to see pygmy elephants, but they hadn't been spotted for a long time. It is suspected that because there is a lot of water around in December, so they don't need to come to the river to drink. You might have a better chance in the dry season. We were told by people who did the night walks that the mosquitoes were think & the trails muddy. And they didn't see a great deal of wildlife. Sleeping birds were probably the main thing they saw. But with wildlife tours, you can be lucky or not.

Hello TravelDooey, Greetings from Borneo Calling! Thank you for taking a moment to share your experience with us. Unfortunately, we have no record or recollection of your experience with us, nor can we verify anything about your identity from your name in our records. Further to your feedback, the length of stay can be very subjective and individualized. But stay overnight for a day or 2 to do multiple river trips definitely the best way to see the natural aspects of Kinabatangan River :) Wildlife movements are unpredictable. Due to the inherent nature of viewing wild animals in their natural habitat, sightings always depend on a degree of luck! Chances to see them in wild always there. Last but not least, wishing you all the luck in the world on your next journey to Kinabatangan River in the future!

We did the 3D2N kinabatangan experience, sleeping in Borneo natural sukau bulky resort. The facility looks good and it’s well maintained. Beds are comfortable and the buffet dinner is decent. Breakfast is a bit less satisfying.
What doesn’t work is all the rest.
The hosts and the tour guides are not so welcoming, not rude, but they limit all the possible interaction with the tourist, making it feel like we are just of money for them which don’t need attention at all. This is way different in other lodges we visited in Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand for example.
The 3D2N tour is just pointless. The place doesn’t have enough to offer in this timespan to make it a valuable experience. The right amount of time here would be 2 days and 1 night if you want to see animals. The boat tour is the same experience for 4 times in a row and the “trekking”, which is walking around the lodge for 30 minutes, are also really repetitive. The scenery is just not fascinating: you will only see little trees and muds filled with mosquitos. No trace of animals despite from macaques trying to steal some food from the resort’s restaurant. It’s not a jungle, it’s more like a swamp.
The rainforest is only limited through the length of the main river, while in the remaining part is just palm trees plantations. All the animals that are visible are all along the river just for the reason that is the only place in which they can survive. It’s a really sad show, and the palms are easily visible with Google maps/earth and on the way with the bus to the lodge. I felt that the forest remains along the river makes it able to bring tourist with the little boat, making it easier for them to manage and more profitable. You see the animals, don’t get me wrong, but the reason why you see them it is just not ethical and for a sensitive tourist like me, ruins all the experience. There is no possibility to leave the boat on the side of the river and explore because the owners of the palm tree plantations don’t want tourist to see the disaster they created. The animals hear this loud sound every day in the morning and at night, they shouldn’t be happy. UNESCO also didn’t protect these lands, so they really can do what they want.

Choose something else if you want to see jungle wildlife!

PS: I talked with other tourists from other companies and they managed to pay a bit less than us.

Hello opocajthepianist, Greetings from Borneo Calling! Thank you for taking a moment to share your experience with us and we’re glad to hear that you enjoy your stay at the resort. First of all, we are so sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience with the resort’s staff. We have shared your feedback to the resort’s management in order to improve in these areas. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Further to your feedback, the length of stay can be very subjective and individualized. There are a variety of ways to see this area and the wildlife in it. We do have customers who spend two nights at the river like you do and they enjoyed it so much! Yes, there are two boat rides (early morning and evening) cruising up and down the river in a day as the best time of day to spot wildlife along Kinabatangan River is during dawn and dusk. The boat tours are scheduled but the wildlife sighting and the experience can be so much different. Despite the muddy trail and mosquitos, we hope you still able to enjoy getting an up-close glimpse of sleeping bird and insects spotted along the night walk. Kinabatangan is not merely rainforest, but a long river in Sabah state, 560 km running from Southwest Sabah to its outlet at the Sulu Sea, consists of limestones caves, dryland dipterocarp forest, riverine forest, freshwater swamp, oxbow lakes and salty mangrove swamps. Due to its unique characteristic, Kinabatangan River offers an incredible opportunity to see large range of wildlife in Borneo. It is undeniable oil palm plantation has posed a severe threat to Kinabatangan valuable wildlife. But Sabah government had made significant steps towards securing habitat for wildlife in the region by retains several types of protected forests, like The Lower Kinabatangan-Segama Wetland Ramsar site, The Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary (LKWS), Virgin Jungle Reserves (VJR-Class VI) and other protected forests. We hoping so much for sustainable conservation and protection of wildlife habitat as you do, it is an effort of all parties to ensure Kinabatangan ecosystem to survive long into the future. Thank you once again for filling out a review. We appreciate your honest feedback and hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back on a future visit :)

Hi Denny, thank you for sharing your feedback. We understand that the road conditions can be challenging, as outskirts areas might have roads that are not as well-maintained as those in urban city centers. Regrettably, this is the only route leading to the heart of Borneo's wildlife. We do agree with you; staying overnight at the lodge is often recommended for a more immersive wildlife experience. The area is renowned for its diverse and abundant wildlife, including proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pygmy elephants, and various bird species. However, some luck may be needed to catch glimpses of these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. Have a nice day!

My wife and I went to the Kinabatangan River Cruise last November 2021. It was a smooth sailing experience from contacting Borneo Calling to book the half day cruise up until we returned to our hotel in Sandakan after the entire advanture. The journey to and from the Resort was relatively far but we were grateful that Borneo Calling provided us with transportation with a reasonable additional fee, considering how long the drive was. Once we arrived at the base camp, we were greeted by hospitable hosts who prompted us on our cruise activities and served us with warm Bornoen tea. The Resort was beautiful and nestled in the middle of the jungle next to the tame Kinabatangan River. The design and architecture of the Resort truly blend in with nature with rustic wooden floor, poles and had walkways taking you to homie chalets dispersed throughout the area. Unfortunately for the life of me I couldnt remember the name of the Resort.

Once we embarked on the boat and began our river tour, the humble river guide gave us quite an extensive information regarding the river's geography and the local wildlives. The river guide was very alert and made sure that we didnt miss any animals native to the river in the likes of orangutan, probocis and macaque monkeys, hornbils, etc. According to him, we were very lucky to see two orangutans living quitely up on the trees as this was a rare sight in the Kinabatangan River. My wife and I really had a good time during the cruise and our interaction with the river guide is one we cherished as he was always accomodating with our requests such as having a closer look at a big family of short tail monkeys next to the river banks.

After our river cruise, we were served with delicious local cuisine for our dinner and enjoyed dining next to the tame Kinabatangan river under the stars. All in all we had a wonderful time and we really owe it to Borneo Calling for arranging all of it for us.

Its wonderful. I enjoyed everything. Staffs are very welcoming and helpful. Great service. Food is amazing. Accomodation is clean and cozy. Into the nature holiday for break from busy worklife.
