- ericmatos10 contributionsMemories to last foreverParty of 13 with ages ranging from 14-78… our guides Marvin and Diego were knowledgable, friendly, funny and excellent communicators. Chachi drove us safely from place to place. This tour is well worth it… it included lunch as well. We had an amazing time. Bring water shoes, hiking shoes, water bottle and bathing suit under or you can change there. Bring some cash to purchase something at the indigenous stop. Thermal water were the perfect end to our day along with an alcoholic beverage. Pura Vida!!!Written March 23, 2025

Our guides - Franklin, Uriel, and Max were very friendly, knowledgable and made the trip such an incredible experience. They made every moment feel like we were family. They made it so we all feel comfortable and made sure we all had a great time. This tour is definitely worth every single penny! The amount of things you do for thier price is incredible. - eliarsghost0 contributionsOverly long dayOn the morning we visited the Fortuna falls and on the return stopped to visit a “traditional” village and see their wares which they were selling. There was delay for lunch, waiting for tables to clear, eventually we were seated for lunch. Pickup to finishing lunch took over 6 hours, far too much hanging around and killing time. In the afternoon we visited Mirador del Silencio to see the lava fields and volcano. Nice views and we were lucky to have clear skies and to see the volcano. Then on to a thermal park with a quick stop to see a pair of sloths. The afternoon was far better paced than the morning. One big complaint, this was sold as a small group trip (max 14) but for most of the day we have 22 people and two guides. As you would expect, every stop then took longer to round people up.Written March 19, 2025
- KartRam000 contributionsVolcano and Waterfall Day trip with my 13 year old son. This was an exceptionally well-organized and truly unforgettable experience! For those tracking their activity, expect to climb around 70 floors in elevation—my Watch confirmed the impressive workout. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment, from the breathtaking waterfalls to the exhilarating volcano hike. The included lunch was a delightful and much-needed break, perfectly timed to recharge us for the rest of the adventure. Highly recommend this tour for anyone seeking a blend of natural beauty, physical challenge, and seamless organization! Seeing some bats and Fer-de-Lance by the waterfall were some surprise wildlife sightings thanks to the guides who showed them.Written March 19, 2025
- Mazal331800 contributionsInteresting day, but longOverall a nice day with plenty to see. Alex was an excellent guide who made the day an interesting experience showing a diversity of Costa Rica. We were picked up from our hotel in the center of San Jose at 5:50 am and we were brought back to the hotel at 9:45 pm..... a very long day. There were many interesting stops along the way with plenty of picture taking opportunities. We were lucky that there were no clouds around the Arenal Volcano. We were told that often it is difficult to actually get a good view of the Arenal, which would be a dummer after the long drive. We had not brought bathing suits and therefore we spent our time at the hot springs at the bar. In fact, at the top of the hot springs we had the best view of the Arenal. The stop at the Indian Village was not interesting and personally I would have preferred that dinner was skipped to get us back to the hotel earlier. While Alex was bright and alert till the end of the tour, I wonder whether it was safe for him to be driving us all day through long and winding mountain roads. His day must have been must have been at least 17 hours long, with well beyond 10 hours of driving. As mentioned, Alex did not show any signs of fatigue, but it is an accident waiting to happen. That is why I deleted one star from what overall was a nice day.Written March 19, 2025

My partner (Jana) and I were quite excited about this hike and it exceeded our hopes actually, mostly thanks to Errol's brilliant guidance through the rain forest and cloud forest! This is a fantastic opportunity, away from the business of adventure parks and resorts that are found throughout the region.
We were accompanied by another couple so it felt quite private. Errol knows the way by heart and he was very careful from the start to finish. We never felt unsafe. Errol speaks several languages, most of them self-taught, impressively. His knowledge about the flora and fauna is exhaustive to say the least. He listens to the forest and finds the most fascinating plants and animals (when those want to be found of course! Don't expect to see everything you'd hope for). The way back to Santa Elena is easier. It was cloudy and rainy on the day we went so we didn't see all of the Arenal landscapes which I'm sure is amazing to witness in better weather!
For me, the highlight was the stay at Seferino's house. I will not write about it and leave the surprise to the lucky ones. It was a very touching and beautiful moment. I wish him and Errol all the best in the world! I am very grateful.
Fabio
(I strongly recommend this guided tour but beware this is not an easy hike as you cannot go slowly and there are many changes in elevation in warm and humid conditions, at least until you come out of the rain forest; the rest is more chill; I'd say a good physical condition is required to fully enjoy the hike; maybe don't go if you don't want to get dirty or don't want to sleep in the most simple of conditions)

The trek was excellent.
Walking from the farmland around Largo Arenal, into the rainforest along steep paths deep into the mountains.staying at a farmstead surrounded by the forest, then walking on dirt tracks with uninterrupted views across to Arenal Volcano all the way to Monteverde cloud forest, arriving in San Elena after a short taxi ride
Walking through lemon orchards, swimming in river then I to the narrow tracks steeping walking in forest climbing 1000m. Our guide Christian was excellent. He stopped often to explain things and ensure the walk was kept to a manageable pace,. Everything from fungi through to plants butterflies frogs birds and monkeys pointed out and discussed.
The farmstead had uninterrupted views of Arenal Volcano, yet surrounded by the forest. Firefly display, serene isolation (perhaps we could have done without the predawn cock crowing : but we did not miss the stunning sunrise)
Dinner was excellent suitably sustaining two course event, and breakfast was usual Costa Rican fare.
The second days walk was on wider tracks on ridges just above the forest affording fantastic views. Then a short taxi ride to San Elena.
We booked this as a family of 4 ( 13 yo son and 16yo daughter). This trek requires a good level of fitness, it is steep hot and hot walking, day one 1200hrs to 1700hrs walking, following day 4 hrs walk. The farmstead is basic as you would expect, no electric no phone reception, fresh water, sleeping on thin but clean beds.

This is a unique opportunity to spend a night in a remote location in a self build cabin. For me, this was the part that was the highlight of the trip.
There is a lot of 'up' on the walk, but we walked at an appropriate speed for the group.
I do believe that the guide, Christian, really enjoyed doing this tour and really wanted us to enjoy it. Himself and the cabin owner were very hospitable. Also, the pets were adorable.
I recommend taking - water shoes, hiking shoes, torch, warm clothes for evening, everything in water proof bags, baby wipes, some snacks, power charger bank thing if you need to charge something.
Finally - If you struggle with insects, remember that the rainforest might not be the place for you to sleep 😂🪳

Great hike! Our guide Christian was so knowledgeable about local wildlife and plants, especially birds. He gave us some recommendations for Monteverde as well.
The first day of the hike was mostly uphills with stretches of flat parts. The difficulty wasn't too bad if you have a moderate level of cardio. Our stay was at the home of Severino, an elderly man who lives in the forest. When no cloud cover, there is a stunning view of the volcano directly from the house. Heads up, there is no electricity or plumbing. Just keep that in mind. The meals were definitely substantial and there was plenty of food left over.
Second day of the hike started with an early morning uphill for ~30 min before easing into another 3-4 hours of up and down hill.
The hike can get wet. There are 2 river crossings with the deepest being up to my (6'3) knees. Bring a jacket in case it rains.
Really enjoyed this hike.

Unique experience. Straight through wild nature, 2 days, each with very different hikes and highlights. An enthusiastic guide who knows a lot about the flora and fauna of Costa Rica. Highly recommended. You can have your luggage transported to Monte Verde or go for the full tour and take a bus-boat-bus through beautiful landscapes and over the lake back to La Fortuna

Would I recommend? Yes with one main caveat.
Check what the purpose of the hike is (will you get to appreciate the beautiful scenery or be rushed through) and that it matches your expectations. Be clear on the day with your guide what you have agreed to and what you’re expecting. I wish we had pushed to start earlier in the day as that might have made the day 1 walk more enjoyable.
Day 1 is steep and as a result challenging. But if you have reasonable fitness you will be fine just take lots of short breaks 🙂
Overall Pros: trail was beautiful, varied and challenging in a great way. Señor Sefarino was v kind when we stayed at his cabin, good food and good company when he joined us for the day 2 walk.
Cons from our walk: this wasn’t a guided hike the way I expected - no real engagement from the guide once we started walking and very little discussion. It felt a lot like we were abandoned by him. Our guide seemed to treat the walk like a race, and a significant amount of the time he was out of sight - on day 1 he was somewhere ahead for up to 15 mins at a time at least but completely out of sight; on day 2 he sent us off for 2 hrs before joining us (fuller explanation below). It felt like we were being marched from point A to point B, with little time to appreciate the surroundings which was the point of the walk in our view.
The guide also seemed to take our slower pace of walking to mean dislike or inability to do the walk (for context, all of the group do regular sport - the uphill element of the walk was a challenge to tackle, but challenge, not impossible, unexpected or unwanted). As a result, he arranged an early pick up the next day without consulting any of the group (cutting out walk off). We were all pretty frustrated to be told this was being done because he thought we would like to stop walking based on the day before. As it arrived the ‘taxi’ got a flat tire so we were sent off to “carry on walking if you want to then” and the guide remained behind to help fix the tire. We walked for 2 hours without our guide. The walking was fine and the group really enjoyed it, but it’s a little insane to be left to walk for 2 hrs without a guide.

The trip met our expectations. It corresponds to the description of the trip.
We only misunderstood that the trip is designed in such a way that one does not return to La Fortuna, but is supposed to stay in Santa Elena. Red Lava Tous will transport your luggage while you are on the walk. We misunderstood this and needed transportation back to La Fortuna, which ended up being available for purchase (for an extra fee 20USD per person).
It rained a lot on our trip, which of course you can't control, so the views were hidden in the clouds. Still, we enjoyed the jungle crossing and staying in the valley where we slept.
Can recommend.

We booked the 2 days trek from la Fortuna to Monteverde with red lava tours. IF YOU ARE HESITATING, BOOK IT NOW ! We stayed four weeks in Costa Rica, saw a lot of the country and this was the highlight of our trip. Would easily take the 15 hours round-trip to the country to do it again. Our tour guide was Santiago who deserves a shout-out for his kind and knowledgeable guidance. Santiago clearly cares a lot about the environment and knows the area since childhood.
We met monkeys in the jungle, frogs, crickets, caterpillars, oropendula birds, many other species of birds and a little snake during this hike not to mention countless fruit trees and other flora.
Another great encounter at the end of the first day was with Seferino, owner of the mountain cabin we stayed at for the night. His hospitable welcome and contagious smile made the stay unforgettable.
I dream to go back to Costa Rica just to meet them again in the jungle.

I did this hike with just 3 total people: the guide, another tourist, and myself. It was definitely extreme! I thought I was in excellent shape, but this hike still had me panting. However, if you can brave the steep terrain, you get some of the most incredible views you'll ever see. Walking through the dense, lush Costa Rican rainforest with no one else around for miles is a lifechanging experience. The cabin we stayed at overnight didn't have electricity so we got to eat a delicious candlelit meal cooked over a fire. You really feel like you're in the wilderness. I would HIGHLY recommend this hike -- just bring lots of water and bug spray!

Our tour guide, Franklin, was amazing and extremely knowledgable about everything in nature. We started our hike through a farm and then had to cross a stream and a river. We then headed into the rainforest for a challenging but doable hike (about 9Km) to a wonderful, but basic cabin owned by Mr. Seferanio. It had several bedrooms with wood beds, a little foam cushion and sleeping bags. It was so peaceful being in thia cabin surrounded by nature with no technology. Franklin made us and amazing dinner and breakfast over the fire. On day 2 (8km) we packed up amd continued up the mountain. It started on a trail and most of day 2 was on a gravel road with the most incredible views! We stopped along the way and enjoyed taking pictures and learning from Franklin. It ended by getting picked up in a van and taken the rest of the way to Monteverde.
Once in Monteverde, we had time to have lunch and walk through the shops. We then got in a bus to Lake Arenal and took a boat to the other side then back to a bus for the rest of the way to LaFortuna.
We would HIGHLY recommend this tour with Red Lava and Franklin was amazing!

We're considering doing the La Fortuna to Monteverde hike in late March. Can you provide some more information about the length and difficulty of the hike? What kind of distance are you hiking per day? Lots of elevation change or relatively constant climb? What is the trail like?
