About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- izilber0 contributionsCacao, fruits and cultureI wanted my family to experience San Jose taste and culture. This tour was a great cultural immersion. The tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and eager to answer all questions. The highlight was a coffee and cacao experience at a local hideaway. Definitely would recommend.Written July 7, 2024
- danieldB3027VZ0 contributionsVery good walking tour.5 stars only because our guide was exceptional. Mateus-Emil, a young man who just graduated from high school, very knowledgeable, charming and who spoke fluent English. It was an easy, pleasant walk. We paid for a private tour. This is not a food tour. We did sample a couple of things but that wa it. That being said there should such a tour with a real focus on food.Written January 13, 2024
- Elizabeth M0 contributionsI had a lot of fun, it was 11,000 steps and worth every dollar. Thank youOur guide was very interesting and gave a great tour of San Jose. He also told history of different stops. I would recommend him to other friendsWritten November 25, 2023
- T8909EMcindyw0 contributionsGreat opportunity to become acquainted w the cityOur guide was great and was very helpful in giving us an overview of the market and downtown sights in San Jose. Loved the cafe where we were served drinks and snacks and where we got to talk w the many interesting people in the group about their part of thrworld and experiencesWritten August 18, 2023
- Daniel H0 contributionsWalking TourVery informative tour of the city including tasting local treats in the old markets. Also helpful recommendations for where else to visit.Written July 25, 2023
- diruiz19660 contributionsFun way to experience authentic local cuisineWe met Gilbert at the market. He took us on a quick tour, we tried some local cheese & a taco. Outside we were able to try fresh tortillas right off the grill. We then walked to 3 other places where we were able to taste different authentic foods. We walked to the chocolate factory & finished up with a tequila tasting. Super fun day trying yummy food & enjoying great company!! Would highly recommend.Written June 14, 2023
- heforr0 contributionsTour to NowhereWe waited for an hour at the pre-determined spot and no tour guide showed. After several phone calls and several minutes on hold it was determined that something slipped thru the cracks and no guide had been arranged. Another family waited with us in vain for the same tour. Our tour had been booked 48 hours in advance and confirmed by email. A rare misfire for Viator, but they did process a refund. These things happen, but the lack of any local phone number to contact the company responsible for fulfillment added to the confusion.Written March 14, 2023
- JCOLG0 contributionsCommunication could be betterMy flight was delayed and I tried to get in touch with this company several times with your email and by phone to either rebook or cancel. In fairness, I was within the 24 hour cancellation but they wouldn’t even work with me to refund my money. I don’t feel that it’s right to be this circumstances out of ones control cause you to miss the tour. I wanted to get in touch to see if I could join them a little bit later, but by the time the tourguide I got in touch with me, that was not option. Beware of booking with this company. If you have any issues, they will not work with you.Written February 28, 2023

- Daniel S0 contributionsThe wonderful fruits of San JoseAndrew, our tour guide, was a wonderful companion for the 3 full hours we wondered around the markets of San Jose Costa Rica. He knew the history and had many interesting stories to tell us about how San Jose came to be. We met at the National Theatre. He explained how coffee was the base from which San Jose grew. We then walked to a fruit market where we ate many tropical fruits which were all delicious! My favorite was the Mormón china. A red fruit that looked crazy on the outside but once you peeled the skin there was a sweet delicate fruit that tastesed wonderful. We then walked to the Central Market and had Caldados. That is ceviche in a bag of doritos. It was wonderful. We also stopped by and had a tasty cup of coffee. All in all a wonderful experience. We are very happy we did this excursion and recommend it highly.Written August 26, 2022
- dantescholar0 contributionsMake sure you will get to taste *anything*There was no food. Paid for the private experience, and, apparently, the tour guide thought private meant only them--never stopped talking, and made us wait almost an hour and an half for the cup of coffee that's supposed to happen at the beginning. Took us to the market and described the food, telling us endless anecdotes. But, and I repeat, there was no food. Not that there was much sightseeing either, as I recall.Written June 7, 2022

This experience completely changed the way I see San Jose. Our group was perfect and small and included myself, my grandmother, and one other tourist. Our guide, Vinny, was an expert in all things San Jose (and Costa Rica overall) and delivered a perfect walking tour of the cultural/political area of downtown SJ. We started with drinks (included!!) at a local bar, then spent roughly 2.5 hours walking at a slow pace throughout the downtown area while Vinny pointed out culturally significant buildings and monuments, before finishing at a wonderful restaurant in Barrio Escalante. Highly recommend if you are interested in learning more about the history of Costa Rica and San Jose and if you are looking to get a feel for what the city is really like.

The tour was very good but a little bit less than we were expecting. The tour guide was very good - the best weve had so far in Costa Rica. Very informative and catering to our group.
The biggest issue was at dinner it calls out 3 glasses of wine and yet when we got to the restaurant we were told it was 2 and those two glasses were pretty slighly poured so it added to about half of what was promised in the advert.
Normally, i would leave a harsh review at that but I know the industry is struggling and they are likely working with their partners to find ways to survive. I am hopeful of their efforts

Our guide Ernesto was wonderful. We learned so much about the history of the city and the people. Our meal at a local organic restaurant was excellent, and they were able to accommodate my wife's dietary needs. Overall an amazing tour and I highly recommend it.

This was an amazing tour! I actually booked this tour on my birthday, and Jason (our fantastic tour guide) made it very special. Ironically, it was just Jason, my sister, and I, so it also wound up being personal. The tour included a lot of interesting facts and architecture, but what really tied it all together was Jason! He created a very engaging lesson about San Jose. Things that people wouldn’t necessarily care for, he’s able to hook you on! While he remained professional, he still kept it light hearted and fun. He even did us the courtesy of walking us back to our hotel so we didn’t have to get an Uber! By the time we ended the tour I was very well-versed in a city I had never been to before. I was even able to use some of the things that he taught us, outside of the tour. By far THE best tour guides there is.

We really enjoyed this tour and learned a lot about Costa Rica - it's history, culture, food etc. Our guide Ernesto was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He went out of his way to make us feel welcome and to answer our questions. We visited the Central Market, followed by other important buildings and parks in the downtown area. We visited a chocolate shop where we drank wine, ate different types of chocolate and learned about chocolate production. Then we had a wonderful meal in Sylvestre with local food and drink. Ernesto then made sure we all got back to our hotels safely. He was a great guide and it was a good overview of the city for our one night there.

Luz was an absolute gem! Her extensive knowledge of Costa Rican history was impressive. It was truly an interesting and comprehensive experience that we enjoyed. Stimulating conversation, delicious food and cultural atmosphere. I highly recommend it as it gives travelers an excellent frame of reference for understanding how the historical origins shaped the socio-cultural present. Definitely book it for the first or second night in San José. Thank you Luz:)

I had a great time learning the history of Costa Rica and walking around the city. Our guide was very knowledgeable of local lore as well which really makes the tour fun. He always made sure we were enjoying ourselves and went the extra mile. The food and drinks were great! I feel like I have a greater understanding of not only San Jose, but the rest of Costa Rica as well. I definitely recommend this tour.

The tour was pretty bad. Started out fine but then was raining so hard and did not have good alternate which meant two people ended up leaving tour in beginning. The guide was negative about San Jose and people at times which was hard to be around. There were moments were he was informative but tour was not good. Also, we went to one place for a small drink and dinner at decent place to eat. Overall was disappointed as did not match descriptions. If food and culture tour should have more of both. There was also not dessert until we asked or taxi as indicated. They ended up giving us dessert after asking but not taxi. I would not recommend this tour.

If you were looking for a foodie tour do not do this tour! While the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history in the area we were walking through we did not discuss food! We also felt like it was a bit of a race and at one point we lost the tour guide, standing in a corner lost! We were all mistaken what the purpose of the tour was. If you think this is one of the tours where you were sampling different foods you’re wrong. The whole tour group was under the impression that’s what we would be doing. They were three separate groups that participated. The dinner was not good and I could not eat my food it taste more like Mexican food. My friend thought her chicken was probably frozen fried chicken thrown into a salad. Very disappointed and sad! I thought they were supposed to be three courses but we only got two maybe that was enough because they weren’t good.

Emil is a fantastic guide!
The tour almost got cancelled due to weather and others ended up cancelling or rescheduling, but I joined and Emil ended up giving me a private tour.
We toured mostly east from the meet point to Barrio Escalante, which is well worth the walk! A beautiful area with good restaurants serving excellent food.
My big thanks goes to Emil. Wise beyond his years, he is extremely knowledgeable and is perfectly fluent in English. I learnt a lot of Costa Rican history from him. He is a clear communicator, friendly and positive.
