- Judith M00Bike and Bites tour (Special Day)Great bike tour with Paul today. Highly recommend. Paul is full of knowledge about his city and also a coffee expert (sommelier for coffee). Really fun day , Thank you Paul, Peter and Judith
- PKEM00Great way to see San JoseMy wife booked a private tour with Roberto and just said we wanted to do a bit of cycling, a bit of walking but most importantly we wanted to see the real San Jose. Alex was our tour guide and he did exactly what we asked. Alex kept the tour fluid and when he could see we were interested in something, he would spend more time on it. Alex was a great guide and we definitely went to parts of San Jose that we would not have seen otherwise. The cycling was fairly easy - on a couple of steeper hills we walked up. Highlights of the tour were the green (farmers) market, the bustling central market and a quality cup of filtered Costa Rican coffee to finish. Thanks Alex for a great tour,
- Travelling-Christine00Jorge was an amazing city guide!!Jorge was a fantastic city walking guide and representative for his city and country. We asked him to focus on Costa Rican history, politics, education, parks and sustainability. We feel so much more informed about this beautiful country as we venture out to other Costa Rican gems.
- Sharon S00Personalized market tour was the perfect evening!Chepecletas was a lifesaver for our group! With only one afternoon to see San Jose before continuing on, our group of ten really wanted an introduction to the country, a guided explanation of the area around our hotel, and help navigating a colorful indoor market and our first meal in Costa Rica. Roberto assured us they could work with our group and was constantly supportive and responsive during planning. Our guide, Jessica, was simply outstanding, and we would have taken her along on our entire trip if we could have! Jessica made sure we were prepared for our tour before leaving the hotel (for rain, with dinner money, etc.) then patiently showed us around the market, helped us through a delicious and budget-friendly meal at her favorite market place, and then back on the streets she shared the amazing history of Costa Rica with us while showing us important buildings in the neighborhood. I can’t promise Chepecletas will always be able to bend over backwards to fit your schedule like they did with us, but I know you won’t go wrong taking one of their tours. And I definitely recommend learning about San Jose when you visit!
- morgangM7089QG00Enjoyable, Relaxed AtmosphereThe tour was great. The guides were youthful and easy to talk to. They provided more than enough information on Costa Rican culture and history. Unfortunately our tour was cut short due to a mishap with a booking through Viator (would not recommend- terrible experience/very unprofessional group). Some highlights of our walking tour included being taken to the currency exchange, highlights of different architectural structures and being able to see the market, which was buzzing with people. If I ever come back to Costa Rica I will be sure to book this tour again.
- DTegs00Good bike tourEasy to book, meet and a comprehensive view of the city. I think the price is slightly too much but the tour good nonetheless. As a lone traveller I would have preferred to join a group but it was a 1:1 cycle tour. I saw a lot of the City with the fun of the bicycle
- Fausol00Great Not traditional ToursI have been in 3 tours that Chepecletas has orginized and each one of them had a different perspective and objective. The tours are designed to people that love history and really wants to see the city in a different perspective. Ex: Spanish influence in the Amon architecture. It´s very different than any other walking tour I have done around the world. You can see that the guides are people that truly love the city and the environment and want to transfer their knowledge to other residents and curious tourist! I highly recommend that you follow their Facebook page and stay tuned to see which are the next tours!
- Jorge V00Great tours, very informativeI've taken a couple of their walking tours, and they've both been very enlightening and fun. The guides are charismatic and knowledgeable, and the tours are very well planned. You get to learn a great deal about San José that even as a local you would have no idea.
- altrejos8700All you wanna know in San José in one tourIf you want to learn from Tico´s foot, history, culture and architecture in one tour... you should try it
- Nadine69200Great tour and stories of the blooming season! The tour we went was fun, pleasant and very educational. Our guide was very knowledgeable and the staff was friendly and helpful. It is nice to be with a group of people who just want to enjoy the beauty of the season, learn and share a nice picnic at the end:) If you want to know a bit more this beautiful country in a relaxed and interesting way, you have to try those tours!
- Ray G00Private Walking Tour w/ AndresI was a little bummed that they canceled my bike tour the night before, but went ahead with a walking tour the next day. It was totally worth it. I paid $35 (ended up tipping a little too) and went with Andres in a tour of the city. Andres was very knowledgeable about the history & culture of Costa Rica in the 20th century, and gave anecdotes of several of the builidngs we passed by. He also bought me a coffee inside the Mercado Central and we even got a bargain on one of the souvenirs, per his recommendation. I learned a good amount in this 2-hour tour, and at the end he even waited with me to ensure that I got in my uber (traffic is pretty hectic around this area). Big props to Andres! I am only taking off 1 star because of the last-minute bike tour cancellation.
- coffeegossip00Informative walking tourWe arranged this at the last minute and were happy that we were given Carla an interesting, educated and informative young guide. We learnt about the history of Costa Rica and how it was reflected in the architecture. The tour culminated in a tasting session in Soda Tala in the central market which was delicious and filling so don't have a big breakfast before this tour.
- adrialvarez00A must in San JoséThe tour is amazing. I am costarican and had never seen my city nor learned about it in such a way that I ended up admiring and loving it. The concept is simple, you walk around several important places, listening and learning. I fell in love with my city. I totally recommend it, if you are a national or a visitor. Is a must!
- geneva00Great walking tourOur family booked a walking tour at the last minute with ChepeCletas. It was awesome. A perfect way to see the city and decide what areas you want to see more of on your own. Well Organized, bilingual, friendly, safe, etc. Great tour.
- Cathy_Civy00Experienced & first-time travelers - highlights to “Chepe” (San José)ChepeCletas – So there I was: no chance of catching the city tours available and with 6 hrs. to spare before heading to the airport. Luckily GoVisitCostaRica (they who planned my trip) had connections with the college-student based ChepeCletas (“Chepe” nickname in Spanish for José; “Cletas” abbreviation for “bicicletas”, bycicles). This dynamic, well-informed and reliable group of students *luv* San José and promote their city via special events, social media and private tours. My guide, Maria José, squeezed two hours out of her schedule on a Thursday morning to walk me through little-known and hidden landmarks and sights. Further, she kindly arranged the transportation back to my hotel with a reliable and safe driver so that I could explore the Pre-Columbian museum for a couple of hours. Highlights: * Centro Nacional de la Cultura (vertical sun dial and “fábrica de licores” - rum and liquour cauldrons!) * Edificio metálico (1896 building made of iron) * Calle 0 0 – nacimiento de San José de la Boca del Monte (birthplace of the city of San José) * Edificio de Correos (Post Office) – 1917 architecturally stunning building where beautiful stamps can be purchased for your postcards. * Mercado Central (Central market) – 1880 historical and cultural heritage site where you can enjoy a “resbaladera” (barley and rice chilled drink flavored with cinnamon and sugar, purchased mine at “Puntarenas”) Walk around “Chepe” as a native with the ChepeCletas!

We had a great time on our tour with Alexander. Educational, fun, great exercise, and an exciting way to see San Jose. From my initial phone call, Roberto was very accommodating for us on short notice, and arranged a tour for our time schedule. We really enjoyed the stop at cafe machado, too, for a local, expert coffee experience. Highly recommended for an active tour.

We wanted to get a sense of San Jose while being active and really got that. Paul was our guide, he was very friendly and knowledgeable. Stopping along the way, giving us information about the buildings, architecture, and history of the neighborhoods. Towards the end of the tour we stopped for empanadas and then coffee at two wonderful and unique spots. We truly enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend.

We had a great time on our bike tour. Our guide, Malo, was really wonderful. He took us on quite an adventure. He recognized that we were pretty experienced riders, so we took a bit more difficult route in order to go to a beautiful park. He peppered the trip with history and information about the city. Our trip ended at a very nice coffee shop where they explained the growing, brewing and exporting processes of Costa Rican coffee.

I found the people at ChepeCletas to be attentive and well-organized. I was met at the pre-ordained time for a one-person bicycling tour of San Jose, and my guide Charlie was more than capable. I enjoyed the trip!

I have been exploring San Jose an number of infinite times since the 1980's. While accompanying guests yesterday, I still managed to enjoy San Jose in another perspective. I was thrilled to realize how much the city has changed over recent years to become a delightful, more pedestrian friendly city. It is now one that I would recommend that visitors spend time discovering rather than to avoid as I had suggested in the patsy I would not have enjoyed this recent trip in SJ without the knowledge and delightful enthusiasm of our guide, Marie Jose. Bravo and thanks.

We met Maria Jose in front of the Teatro Nacional at 9 am. She was right on time. She led us around central San Jose pointing out historical and interesting landmarks and points of interest. While she denied it, her English was better than some people I know in the States. The 2 hours flew by and I'll bet that if we had twice that she could have filled that with equally as interesting things to see. I made my reservation via email and the folks at Chepecletas were efficient with their quick replies. My mom lives in San Jose and is looking forward to taking more tours with this company and I will be using them in the future as well.

We had a great private tour with Pablo today. When we initially got to San Jose and saw the traffic, we were apprehensive about riding bikes through the streets. But we were pleasantly surprised to see how many bike lanes and paths the city has. Our guide Pablo was a young friendly guy who spoke perfect English. We learned some historical and architectural facts, rode through parks and flower-tree lined streets, and got a tour of the beautiful University campus. My husband and I are active thirty-somethings who don’t bike very often, and the difficulty level was perfect for us. This tour is a great way to see a lot more of the city than you would by foot!

A walking tour of some of the traditional dive bars in San Jose. Carla was an awesome guide, so knowledgable, and engaging, it felt like we were just going for a couple of drinks with a friend we'd known for ages.
Really interesting bars, that we almost certainly wouldn't have gone into without the tour. Well worth booking this in on your first night in San Jose as well to really get a feel for the city. I'd definitely do the bike tour if we were stying longer.
