Highlights
Fantastic wildlife sightings such as bears and bald eagles
Learn more about the local ecosystems from a naturalist guide
Watch a totem pole carving at the Herring Bay Lumber Company
Hassle-free pickup and drop-off from your Ketchikan hotel
What to expect
After pickup at your hotel and a brief drive, meet your naturalist guide at Ketchikan Port for this walking tour covering the diverse wildlife of Alaska. Observe the bustling port, where fishermen cruise in and out throughout the day, and then it’s off to the woods with your guide. Learn from the guide about the beautiful cedar, hemlock and spruce trees, as well as the thick carpet of moss and wildflowers, as you amble through the dense forest.  See a protected estuary and follow Eagle Creek to a rustic boardwalk with a view of wetlands. During spawning season, thousands of salmon return to this spot, and lots of wildlife supported by the salmon population return here too. Bears, seals and bald eagles frequent the area during that time, as well as many other times of the year, so keep a keen eye out for them and have your camera ready. Listen as your guide explains the nuances of this fragile ecosystem and the diverse wildlife that depend on it.  When you reach the end of the half-mile trail, you’ll have the option to visit the Alaska Raptor Center, your chance to get up close and personal with the local wildlife. To conclude the informative, scenic hike, stop at the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill. See a master totem pole carver in action, explore the interpretive displays and relax with a snack before being taken back to your hotel.

Interesting Tour with Bears and Birds
Sep. 2019
An enjoyable, easy tour. A nice forest walk followed by a raised boardwalk over a stream where as a bonus a bear was feeding on salmon. The raptor centre had a bald eagle and a carver was working on a totem. Ally our guide was patient and informative. plenty of time to stop and look at what you wanted.

Perfect morning
Sep. 2019
Joe was a great guide, extremely knowledgeable and obviously enjoys sharing and teaching. Even though we were about 3 days late for the salmon, seeing bear poo on the trail gave me hope we might still see a bear (my main reason for booking this tour just the day before) and while snapping pictures of the several eagles in the trees lining the open field part of the trail, in walks a big beautiful bear! She sat on a log and like she was posing for pictures. Mission accomplished. After the trip back to town we still had plenty of time to browse Creek St and more before having to be back on board. We only had a half day or so in port. We were a party of two, our tour consisted of 6 participants. Sanctuary has 2 birds, the hostess Heather told a great story but if you’re going strictly for the sanctuary you will be disappointed.

Informative walk through the rainforest
Sep. 2019
Our guide, Red, was very informative and we learned a lot about the forest plants and animals. We met the bus right by the Visitors Center immediately next to the cruise ship dock. It is an easy, slightly downhill walk. At the boardwalk, you cross a meadow next to a creek. Unfortunately, we didn't see bears or eagles, although we did see a seal pop its head up. Since the animals are wild, they are not predictable.

It was interesting to see the local native tribesman carving a new totem pole as well as to see the 16 totem poles outside. There was an injured bald eagle and a hawk in the raptor center.

Ben is an excellent guide to wonderful part of the world
Sep. 2019
This is a physically easy walk through a rain forest with an enthusiastic, informative guide, Ben. Ben pointed out many interesting plants while pointing out various stages of tree growth. Additionally, we saw many salmon eagles nests, seals and wonderful otters. We met a native wood carver who answered our questions and demonstrated his design techniques. Finally, we explored many totem poles in the area. This was an extremely well run tour that was educational and very enjoyable. Good job!

Flora and Fauna
Sep. 2019 • Friends
This trip started up the coast on a bus for 20 mins and then a guide walked us slowly round a rain forest path showing us how the rain forest evolves and talking about wildlife that lived there.
It ended near a creek where there were salmon running and seal and sea birds in abundance.

The totem pole carver was disappointing as there was just a 6’ piece of wood that he had started but no demonstration. The adjacent defunct saw mill was historically interesting

The tour ended with a presentation on birds of prey rescued and sometimes rehabilitated and the ubiquitous shop before the coach back to Ketchikan

No wildlife seen but this is not reason for 1 star
Aug. 2019
We learned more from our bus driver (KAREN-5stars) to and from this attraction. This attraction was a waste of time and money. The gentleman that did the tour was soft spoken and with a large group we could not hear him nor did he wait to start talking until everyone was close. Also, the guide was difficult to hear due to zip lining over head and number of diesel buses running that could be seen through the tiny rainforest area. Stopped taking pics due to all the man made items in background......zip lines, buses and buildings. What a joke! Did learn a little about the old man's hair and young bear taught to climb the tree while mama bear looks for food or for safety. Towards the end walk through a abandoned mill. Best part here was seeing the difference between the trees from circular cross sections. Gift shop at the end with a few totem poles. Even if we would have seen wildlife, this tour was lame.

We saw bears and bald eagles
Aug. 2019 • Couples
Austin and Javier were our guides and they were fantastic. They were knowledgeable and had so much information to pass on. They kept us in nearly constant observation of bears (I realize we also got lucky the bears were moving about a lot). They put up with us taking literally hundreds of pictures. The Raptor rescue was also a highlight of this trip. The history lesson and old logging machinery was interesting.

Friendly staff, but not what I expected
Aug. 2019 • Couples
The staff were incredibly sweet, especially Joe. However, this “hike” was not what I expected at all. I mainly booked based off the review that you may see wildlife and bears. The hike is very short and focuses on plant life more than anything else. We saw one “wild” eagle and one other in captivity. There was also a bear spotted on a mountain but we weren’t allowed to wait for it to make its way down to the river which was heartbreaking since it wasn’t very far away.

I sincerely wouldn’t have booked had I knows the hike was a small loop and it wasn’t focuses on animals.
