Ride through the Santa Cruz redwood forests aboard a steam locomotive on this alternative sightseeing tour, a great choice for travelers with limited time. Guarantee access to the popular and often sold-out Roaring Camp Steam Train by booking in advance, and personalize your itinerary by choosing from a range of departure times.
  • Book your ticket ahead of time to avoid sold-out departure times for the train
  • Learn about the redwood forest through your train conductor's commentary
  • Explore the Bear Mountain summit and its attractions
  • Walk through the historic village at the train's base camp
What to Expect
Find your way to the Roaring Camp Steam train's departure point in the town of Felton. Make your way through the recreation of an historic town and exchange your voucher for a ticket on the train ride you have chosen. Booking this ticket ahead of time guarantees your spot and your choice of departure time; rides often sell out, especially in the summer. Sit down on the open train and enjoy the scenery as the train chugs through the redwood forest. Listen to your conductor's commentary, which will fill you in on the history of the area and the train system in California. You'll learn that the train itself dates back to the 1800s and is one of the country's best preserved narrow-guage steam engines. When you reach Bear Mountain's summit, hop out to stretch your legs and explore the nearby Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Return to Roaring Camp at the end of your ride, which takes about an hour.

Great way to spend hour and a half and then walk across the tracks to Henry Coldwell Redwoods State Park. The train ride was fun and the conductor was very knowledgeable about Redwoods and the history of the area. The redwood are just majestic!!

Road the train through the redwoods on a Friday mid morning (11 am). I was actually shocked with how many people were there. The train was full but we did not feel like sardines. I would hate to see what happens on a weekend. It was really relaxing and worth at least doing once.

The staff kept asking us to squeeze up and brought in folding chairs to stuff even more people in the train. At least the folks in folding chairs got a full seat. We paid for 4 seats but got squeezed into 3 spots. It was a bit tense.

It's OK if you have nothing better to do and don't like hiking or walking. There are much better things to do in the immediate area.
